T.J. wearing 29 Pixar-themed T Shirts at once

Pixar Post has set a world record! About a month ago, I was looking at my Pixar T-shirt collection and thought to myself, "that's a lot of shirts"! Being a little goofy, I figured it would be fun to try and put them all on at the same time and see how many could fit. That's when I realized I should capture the video and upload it to the Record Setter website - a place where you can set (or break) almost any record that you can put your mind to (and, it's free).

Pixar Post currently holds the world record for "Most Pixar-themed T-Shirts Worn at Once"

So can you beat our record? What other records could you break? We're looking to have some fun with this, sothink of your best Pixar-inspired records, capture them on video, upload them to Record Setter and share them with us - we'd love to see what you can come up with! To help organize the Pixar records in one place, we set up a Pixar Post Record Breaking page on our Forum, so head over there to include your own, or just to watch them all.

Also, if you try and break the T-Shirt record, you'll want to have someone else around to help you get out of the shirts since that's the hardest part - believe me!

As a fun side note - since we've uploaded our video we're currently #3 on the top trending world records on the Record Setter site!

UPDATED - Thanks for the support everyone, we've now jumped to the #1 trending world record! Thanks everyone! Be sure to vote on our video and leave a comment on the Record Setter site too - let's show everyone that Pixar records are the best records to break!

Inside Out Teaser Debuts at CinemaCon

During Disney's presentation at the 2014 CinemaCon in Las Vegas this morning, they surprised the crowd by screening an updated clip from Pete Docter's upcoming film, Inside Out. If you recall back to the 2013 D23 Expo, Pixar showed a short animatic of a scene (description pasted below) and according to The Hollywood Reporter, the clip shown was an updated, fully animated version of that same moment in the film.

...the emotion characters (Joy and Sadness) get lost inside Riley's mind - leaving Anger, Disgust and Fear to run the show. Riley doesn't have any Joy or Sadness at this point and her Mom senses that she's only Angry, Disgusted and Fearful. As Riley's Mom questions her, the three remaining emotions, attempt to take the place of the missing Joy emotion without success. Riley's Mother then pulls in her Father, who's emotions are watching hockey...all of them! Riley's Father begins to question her and then she blows up in anger since that's the emotion in charge at that time. The Mom then storms off and says, "Why didn't I marry that Brazilian helicopter pilot?"

We can only speculate that this may mean that a similar teaser will be released more broadly following the CinemaCon event, so keep your eyes peeled. Inside Out is slated to hit theaters on June 19, 2015 and is certainly generating a lot of buzz not only among fans of Pixar, but among Pixarians themselves. In fact, in an excerpt from Ed Catmulls upcoming book, Creativity, Inc., Brad Bird sung his praises for the originality and complexity of Docter's story. Animators have also been sounding off on Twitter expressing their love and excitement for the project as well.

Phineas and Ferb Disney Infinity Toy Box, Wave 3 Power Discs & The Unlocked Lightsaber

Disney Infinity complete character lineup (crystal figures not included)
Photo © Pixar Post

Disney Infinity is easily our favorite game that we've played in the last several years - it combines exciting play sets, amazingly detailed game figures and allows an immense amount of creativity with its toy box sets. Releasing in stores everywhere tomorrow, April 1, is the final toy box pack for the first version of Disney Infinity, Phineas and Ferb.

Along with the Phineas and Agent P figures, you will also get the sky dome and ground texture discs to transform your toy boxes into the characters picturesque town. We should also note that we have played every adventure for all of the Disney Infinity characters and the adventure for Agent P may be our favorite in the entire game. If you love side-scrolling games, you'll love this adventure.

Wave 3 Power Discs

Along with Danville's favorite characters, April 1 is also the release date for the wave 3 power discs where you'll be able to use the Toy Story Midway Mania blaster, ride Merida's faithful horse (Angus), or use WALL•E's fire extinguisher. The complete lineup of wave 3 discs are:

Circular Discs

  • Violet's Force Field - The quiet daughter of The Incredibles can not only turn invisible, she can generate a force field that can reduce damage by 3%
  • Mickey's Sorcerer Hat - The infamous and iconic hat from The Sorcerer’s Apprentice allows characters to gain experience at a 2% faster rate
  • Chernabog's Strength - A representation of pure evil from Fantasia, you can summon the demonic power of this villain to do 3% more damage
  • Rapunzel's Healing - The magic of Rapunzel’s hair does more than make blonde locks continue to grow. Her golden hair has healing properties that can give a character 40% more health

Hexagonal Discs

  • Wall-E’s Fire Extinguisher - A rare toy inspired by a classic scene from WALL-E, it allows characters to use the propulsion from a fire extinguisher to hover in the air
  • Wall-E’s Collection - Transform the Toy Box in to the desolate wasteland that the Earth has become due to consumerism and neglect
  • Buy ‘N’ Large Atmosphere - The Sky Theme becomes a swirling dustbowl filled with empty buildings that are mere husks of their former glory. The most notable thing in the barren horizon are the numerous Buy ‘N’ Large signs
  • Toy Story Mania Blaster - The toy originates from the Toy Story Midway Mania ride in Disney Parks. Unlike the Goo Guns from the Toy Story Play Set, this is a weapon designed to damage opponents
  • Angus the Horse - The beautiful black Clydesdale from Brave is fiercely loyal to Merida. Although he can be stubborn at times, his strong bond to his owner allows him to be coaxed into almost anything
  • Tri-State Area Terrain - A simple and subtle texture, along with a few gadgets, that is reminiscent of summertime when Phineas and Ferb create their incredible inventions
  • Danville Sky - Turn the Sky Theme into the backdrop of Phineas and Ferb’s Tri-State Area. One of their greatest projects, a giant roller coaster, can be seen off in the distance. In addition, you can spot the iconic building of Doofenshmirtz Evil Incorporated, the lair of Agent P’s nemesis
  • Cruella DeVille's car - Jump in to the villain’s car from 101 Dalmations to chase after friends and foes
  • Disney Parks Parking Tram - This vehicle can bring back fond memories of a trip to the Disney Parks. It provides the great comedic value of driving around a parking lot tram, especially when challenging fancy race cars
  • Calico Helicopter - The cunning and merciless villain from Bolt is always surrounded by cats and its master strategist. Take control of Dr. Calico’s helicopter which is fully equipped with rockets to rain fire from above
  • Phillippe - The loyal horse from Beauty and the Beast is the trusty companion and only mode of transportation for Belle and her father Maurice. The horse is loyal, but has been known to get spooked easily
  • Tantor - Tantor often seems to be timid and even cowardly. However, the gentle elephant has a deep bond with his friends and is often inspired to acts of bravery
  • Dragon Firework Cannon - The cannon from Mulan originated in ancient China and precedes modern guns as one of the first projectile-launching weapons

Star Wars Lightsaber

Probably one of the most surprising and exciting elements that can be unlocked in Disney Infinity is the use of a Lightsaber from Star Wars. The lightsaber can be unlocked if you own all of the characters (not including the crystal figure releases) and bring each of those characters to at least a level 1 of experience. Then, all you have to do is enter the hall of heroes, make sure that all of the statues are present and the lightsaber will appear in the very center of the hall.

Once you have the lightsaber you can activate it with any character in a toy box - you will eliminate enemies in half the time with the incredible power of the weapon - watch our Instagram video below showing Woody take out the enemies with just a few swipes.

With the addition of the Phineas and Ferb toy box pack, the wave 3 power discs and the lightsaber, this is definitely another exciting release for the game and will certainly keep fans playing until the eventual release of Disney Infinity 2.

Be sure to pick up these great toys at your local store, or use the links below to pick up the set at Amazon or the Disney Store.

Pixar Updates Website With New Description of Inside Out

As each piece of news trickles out for Pixar's upcoming film, Inside Out, we grow ever-increasingly excited for June 15, 2015 to arrive. Over the weekend, the official Pixar homepage has added a new (although similar description to what we had heard previously) synopsis for Inside Out to their Upcoming films page. The official description reads -

From the tepuis of South America to a monster-filled metropolis, Academy Award®-winning director Pete Docter has taken audiences to unique and imaginative places. In 2015, he will take us to the most extraordinary location of all - inside the mind of an 11-year-old named Riley.
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.
Director: Pete Docter
Co-Director: Ronnie del Carmen
Producer: Jonas Rivera

Pete Docter grew up in the mid-west (Minnesota), so you can't help but feel the connection to his own life with his eventual move to California for college and then his journey to Pixar. We can't wait to learn about the elements he may have pulled from his own experiences to write the film. While we wait though, join in the conversation and include your prediction for when you think we'll get the first teaser for Inside Out.

This past March, at the Annual South by Southwest (SXSW) Festival (held in Austin, Texas) Mondo Posters and Oh My Disney paired up to showcase a gallery titled, "Nothing's Impossible". The showcase featured seven new prints by four different artists and many of the highly-sought-after prints sold out within a few hours of their release.

Artist Kevin Tong, who collaborated with Mondo, created two Pixar themed screen prints (UP and Wall-e) for the collection and has shared his entire artistic process via Tested.com and his YouTube channel. Each video shows the progression of each poster - from the rough sketch to final image. The pair of fast forward videos are a great peek into Tong's creative mind.

Our Review of Ed Catmull's Book, Creativity, Inc., Speaking Events & The Pixar Post Book Club

Ed Catmull Creativity Inc Book - Pixar Post
Creativity, Inc. book image © Pixar Post

When you think of Pixar, you more than likely think of their superb collection of films. Maybe you think of the emotions you feel when watching their movies. Or maybe, just maybe, you dream about working alongside some of the greatest creative geniuses in the animation industry.

The rich creativity and collective brainpower at Pixar is something that is often looked upon as a mythical being. It's perceived as magic - a magic that makes us want to rub shoulders with the studio's employees and have some of that creativity rub off on ourselves. The fact of the matter is that it's not magic at all - it's a very conscious effort to look for hidden roadblocks and ensure that an employee's voice is always able to be heard (among many other elements).

Ed Catmull photo © Deborah Coleman (Pixar) / Cover © Disney•Pixar

THE BEGINNING

Ed Catmull, Pixar's co-founder and President, is one of the team of people which continually works to try and identify roadblocks within the studio. With his book, Creativity, Inc. (Random House), Catmull shares some of the wisdom he's learned over the years of watching, listening and growing within the field of computer animation. In fact, Catmull is among the elite few who can say that they were at the very forefront of computer animation and his contribution to the field is inarguable - so when he speaks (or writes), we'll listen.

The introduction of the book sets the overall tone perfectly - through his styling he lets the reader know that the information being presented will be very detailed, but told through stories culled from his years at Pixar rather than this being a list of studies, facts and figures. Fans of Pixar's history will surely enjoy the opening three chapters as they delve into the history of not only Pixar, but of computer graphics in general. Ed's candor (a term he prefers to use) rings true across the pages - from his lack of managerial skills when Pixar formed, to the ability to listen to employee's needs, Creativity, Inc. really finds it's groove in Chapter four (Establishing Pixar's Identity).

Fred Armisen Creates A Fake Pixar Movie During 'Late Night With Seth Meyers'

If you've seen the evening talk show, Late Night With Seth Meyers, you may have noticed a recurring bit during each episode called "Fred Talks". After the opening monologue, Seth takes a seat behind his desk and greets Fred Armisen (the band-leader for the show's 8G band). It's during this conversation that we get to see Armisen's comedic mind and improvisational brilliance in action as Fred doesn't know what Seth is going to throw at him.

The bit evolves with Seth telling Fred that he overhead him talking to someone (a guest or other crew member) about a typically outlandish story. For instance, in several episodes Fred was "overheard" telling someone that he started a clay-based theme park, or a new exercise craze called "Chase the Donkey". During last Friday night's episode though (episode 28), Fred mentioned that he was going to voice a swimming instructor in an upcoming Pixar movie. Watch along as Fred pieces together his character's story and reveals one of his lines of dialogue, "Get in the water".

Although this is clearly Seth and Fred having fun, we couldn't help but pass this along as it gave us a good laugh.

Reader Review: Ed Catmull & Pete Docter Speak at the Berkeley Art Museum Theater about Creativity, Inc.

With Ed Catmull's newly released Creativity, Inc., many Pixar fans have been excited to finally pick up their own copy of this highly anticipated book. In addition to the book's release, Catmull is scheduled to appear at various speaking events as well as book signings through April (as well as one in June). Our friend and reader, James Dempsey was lucky enough to be in attendance for one of the events at the Berkeley Art Museum theater (April 7) where not only was Ed Catmull present, but Pete Docter was on hand for the event as well.

Below, James briefly shares his experience and thoughts on the event:
--
On a beautiful California night at the Berkeley Art Museum theater, just a few miles from the Pixar studio, Pete Docter sat down with Ed Catmull to talk about Ed’s new book Creativity, Inc.

The sold-out crowd of over 200 listened intently as Pete interviewed Ed. The questions led Ed to talk about various topics from the book, with Pete jumping in at times noting supporting stories and insights. The audience was truly listening in on two accomplished colleagues having a casual chat about Pixar and creativity.

Photo © Pixar Post
Ed said he believes all people are creative in their own way. If Ed were to ask an audience to raise their hands if they have a "really good idea to make people more creative", very few hands would go up. But, if he asked for ideas on how creativity can be stifled, just about every hand would go up. From his perspective, it’s not about making people more creative, but about getting rid of the things that stifle the creativity that is already there.

As an example of the unpredictable path of the creative process, Pete described the many story changes of Up - with the story initially being about a king and his two sons in a flying castle (at war with the kingdom on the ground). The story (obviously) went through many changes before reaching its final form.

Ed also talked about Steve Jobs and how well he connected with the film directors - both having a quality of committing 100% to the idea they were pitching at the moment, but also able and willing to change their minds quickly to throw out whatever they had just pitched if a better idea was suggested.

Image © Disney•Pixar

A theme that came up a few times during the evening was the idea of the ‘messy place in the middle’ - that a solution is very rarely found at one extreme or another, but somewhere in the middle. Although that place can sometimes be uncomfortable, it is where creativity lives and usually where solutions are found.

For example, in the Q&A after the talk, one question was “How far along does a movie need to be before you can know its release date?”

Ed first relayed John Lasseter’s statement that ‘a film doesn’t get finished, it just gets released’. Ed then said that you can hurt a film by being too schedule-driven earlier in the process, but also by being too indulgent later in the process. Somewhere in that ‘messy middle’ the needs of the film change, but there is no precise formula.

The evening ended with Ed Catmull signing copies of Creativity, Inc.. It was inspiring to hear Ed speak about what he has observed and learned through the years - it's also a great benefit to all that he is willing to sharing those thoughts with a wide audience.
--

Thanks again to James Dempsey for taking the time to write up a brief review of the amazing speaking event between Ed and Pete. We have previously written a post about James' Pixar and Disney movie tracker iPhone app, Watched Animation List Tracker (WALT) - read our full review.

Ratatouille the Adventure Officially Opening July 10 at Disneyland Paris

Nearly five years in the making, Disneyland Paris has just announced the official Date of Ratatouille the Adventure - set to open on July 10, 2014. In a video teaser released by Disneyland Paris, we are treated to a quick behind-the-scenes look into this new attraction.

Ratatouille the Adventure will feature brand new animation to help enhance the experience and bring the characters to life. In addition to the new animation, Disney Imagineering has done an outstanding job shrinking guests down to "Remy"-size with the incredible props and attention to detail within the attraction.

As revealed earlier this year, Composer Michael Giacchino will reprise his musical Ratatouille-role as he and a talented orchestra will add their musical touches throughout the attraction. While the opening date has been announced we can't help but wonder if the rumors of a Linguini face character will be on-hand to greet guests on July 10 - looks like Disneyland Paris may have a few other surprises for us.

Ed Catmull Answers Fan Questions About Pixar, Technology and Creativity, Inc. in Live Q&A Session

Ed Catmull photo © Deborah Coleman (Pixar)

Julie rose out of bed this morning with a little extra pep in her step. Although it was 5:45 AM (EST), she knew she wouldn't want to miss out on Ed Catmull's live question and answer session hosted by The Guardian. The format was simple - type your question for Ed in the comments section of the post and he would respond back with a reply. Catmull answered many questions during the hour-and-fifteen-minute session - he shared insights from his book, anecdotes from Pixar and even had a fun quip about the famed-yet-false Pixar theory. Below are a few of our favorite questions - including two of our own questions that Ed answered. (Side note - T.J. loved the fact that Ed seemed to be intrigued by our first question.)

Pixar Post: A main topic in Creativity, Inc. is about overcoming obstacles and affecting change. Do you have any thoughts on affecting change in an organization if you're not among the management or senior-level ranks?
Ed Catmull: This is one of the most difficult questions and a really excellent one! The best that I know how to do is to try to set an example for what is means to manage a creative organization and hope that the quality of our work influences other people to at least pay attention to some of the principles that we've used.

Pixar Post: There have been enormous advancements in animation technology, what do you see on the horizon which will be the next technological leap for the industry?
EC: I've learned that I'm not terribly good at predicting the future. However, I do feel that when technology and art are combined in a healthy way it takes you off in unexpected directions, so the way we think about it is to make sure that the artists and technical people are integrated together in the common goal of telling good stories and what that does is it opens us up to new technology as it changes.

Pixar and Disney Songs Get DCONSTRUCTED With an Electronic Dance Music Twist

If you ever woke up one morning and said, "I'd like to listen to the classic Randy Newman's song, You've Got A Friend In Me...but with a dance twist", well today might be your day. Disney has worked with some of today's top mainstream Electronic Dance Music (EDM) artists to recreate many of the Disney (and a few of the Pixar) classic tracks on Dconstructed. It's an interesting collision of worlds to say the least and we strongly feel that this is an album which will either be a love-it-or-leave-it kind of a scenario.

Pixar was represented with four tracks although two of them have been released previously (since Pixar was on top of the EDM movement). Roar (Yogi Remix) from Monsters University was included (track 4) but this track had previously been released on the Roar single from Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso. Track 5 will also find yourself revisiting the Partysaurus Rex-inspired BT & Au5 track, Partysaurus Overflow

Ed Catmull's Nightline & GMA Interview - A Brief History of Computer Animation, A View Into Pixar and More - UPDATED

A true pioneer in the animation industry, Ed Catmull openly and honestly shares insights along his journey to being the head of both Pixar Animation Studios and Disney Animation Studios in his new book Creativity, Inc.. In a recent interview with Nightline, we get a brief history of computer animation, an overview of Catmull's new book and even a short tour of Pixar studios (including the famed secret office, the "love lounge").

Image of the Pixar animation department from the Nightline interview

The six minute video from Nightline can be watched below, but it should be noted that one part of the interview contains an inaccurate piece dialogue. The voiceover states that Pixar won their first Academy Award for Luxo, Jr. when in fact the first win for the studio was for Tin Toy in 1988.

UPDATE:

An additional video featuring Ed Catmull discussing Creativity, Inc. was also on Good Morning America and can be seen below. The interview also touches on the Toy Story 2 fiasco which almost saw the complete deletion of the Pixar's first sequel (this is also discussed in greater detail in Creativity, Inc.).

Upcoming graduates, couldn't have timed their degree completions more perfectly as the CalArts blog also notes that, "The next generation of CalArtians will welcome back Lasseter to campus as he ushers them into the real world at the 2014 graduation ceremony". All we can hope is that John's speech with be posted online for others to view - we're certain it will be nothing short of inspirational.

The CalArts post also refers to the Vanity Fair article which celebrated the inaugural class of the Character Animation program. Be sure to dig into the article if you want to get a great background into the formation of CalArts, the famed A113 classroom and a profile on the members of the original Character Animation program. John is of course quoted in the article and noted,
“I loved cartoons. I grew up drawing and watching them. And when I discovered as a freshman in high school that people actually made cartoons for a living, my art teacher started encouraging me to write to the Disney Studios, because I wanted to work for them one day.”
Be sure to check out the article if you haven't and discuss it in the Pixar Post Forum.

Today, we are pleased to announce the launch of the next phase of Pixar Post - the Pixar Post Book Club (PPBC). The idea of a book club has been in the works for a while and after ironing out some of the details, we think we have a great plan. The goal of the PPBC is simple - create a central location and allow Pixar fans to share their thoughts regarding Pixar books as well as other animation books. For instance, our first book we're currently reading is Creativity, Inc., by Ed Catmull. We'll be reading Creativity, Inc. from now through the end of May so if you haven't already, get started. Read on for more details.

GENERAL RULES, TIMING & PIXAR POST INSIDER

The rules for the book club are simple - we'll follow the overall rules for the Forum. While reading Creativity, Inc., all facets of the book club will be open to all members, but starting with the next book we'll read in June 2014, Pixar Post Insider* members will be allowed to cast their vote to decide future books we'll read, as well as exclusively be invited to join a live video discussion. All forum discussions regarding the books will be available to all readers. (*More details on Pixar Post Insider coming next month.)

Our typical timing to read a book will be two months and will break down as follows:

  • Once a new book is announced you'll begin reading at your own pace. While your reading, we'll break the book down into sections (as designated by book club forum topics for you to discuss). Feel free to use the existing topics or create your own topics to dig into - it's really your book club.

In episode 027 of the Pixar Post Podcast we discuss:

Pixar News of the Week

  • We kick off by discussing the new Pixar items that are new to the Disney Store - from the Buzz iPhone case to the return of the Hamm bank (including a discussion of the differences between the old and new version).
  • What's your Ratatouille? We chat about the forum topic which asks about the foods, smells, sights or sounds which take you back to your childhood...much like Remy's ratatouille dish took Anton Ego back with his first bite.
  • Fred Armisen's fake Pixar role.
  • Disney Infinity's big announcement for the next version of the game.
  • DCONSTRUCTED - We review and provide samples of the Pixar-themed tracks on the Disney•Pixar new EDM album.

Announcing the Pixar Pipeline Project

  • Starting at 17:58 into the podcast - We are extremely proud to announce the kickoff of our Pixar Pipeline Project. The Project is a nine-part series of Pixar interviews which will allow us to follow the path of a Pixar movie through it's journey from story to screen.
  • Our first interview kicks off with Louis Gonzales in Pixar's story department. We chat about everything from how he kicks off his workflow, how the research process takes place (with a great story about Brave's Scotland research trip), keeping your sketching fresh as well as some of the skills that are essential to know if you're looking to work in the story department.
  • During the interview Louis mentioned a few items that we wanted to specifically call out in our show notes in case you wanted to learn a little more about them.

What are you doing on June 29, 2014 at 1:05 PM PST? If you live in the San Francisco area, I'd suggest you head over to AT&T Park for the 2nd Annual, Giants Pixar Day at the Park baseball game. Last year's event was such a hit that the Giants and Pixar have made the "Pixar day" an annual event. In fact, last year's game sold out rather quickly and saw the likes of John Lasseter (threw out the first pitch) and many other Pixarians (Monsters University director, Dan Scanlon - Producer, Kori Rae - Head of Story, Kelsey Mann) in attendance as well.

Guests attending this year's game (against the Cincinnati Reds) will experience Pixar-themed pre-game festivities and will also receive an exclusive Giants-themed, Funko POP! Woody figure. Following the game, guests will invited onto the field to watch a Pixar film (not announced at this time) up on the scoreboard. This is nothing short of an amazing day at the park for families or fans.

Game tickets can be purchased on the San Francisco Giant's Special Events page (with a portion of all ticket sales going to local non-profit charities).
