In-Depth Look at the Hidden Items & Easter Eggs of PartySaurus Rex

PartySaurus Rex may have been released on September 14, 2012, but it continues to be one of our most beloved Toy Story Toons. Not only did we connect to the incredible technical feats (the amazing bubbles) and the incredible soundtrack by BT, but Rex continues to be one of our favorite Pixar characters due to his hilarious, nervous nature. If you have been a reader of our site you know that we love to create our own custom Pixar merchandise, and it all started with PartySaurus Rex.

We created our own custom PartySaurus Rex toy based on our excitement for the short and started using the Twitter hashtag #FollowRex to allow everyone to watch as we took Rex around Detroit (our hometown), Disneyland and even to Pixar Animation Studios itself. Julie also loved the short so much, she created her very own custom PartySaurus Rex/Pixar Canada hooded sweatshirt.

In addition to the custom items we've made, we also both have a passion for finding the hidden easter eggs within Pixar films. It only seemed fit that we would compile a list of hidden items for one of our favorite shorts - the only question is, how many of these have you spotted?

Hidden Items and Easter Eggs

You may have noticed in Toy Story 3 or even Hawaiian Vacation that Bonnie's backpack had a familiar Pixar character embroidered on it - Wally B (from Andre and Wally B). That same backpack appears briefly at the beginning of Partysaurus Rex - but what you may not have noticed is that the pilot zipper pull, Captain Zip (voiced by Angus MacLane), who briefly made an appearance in Hawaiian Vacation also appears in the background of the tub scene.

Mark Walsh (Partysaurus Rex director), mentioned in a tweet near the end of production that his childhood bathroom was used as an inspiration for Bonnie's bathroom.

In the bathroom, you may notice that there are foam letter stuck all over the wall - do the letters mean anything? You bet. At the beginning of the bath scene you'll notice the letters "VBC" on the wall - that ties to Vancouver, British Columbia where Pixar Canada was located. During one brief cut when the rave was in full swing, the letter rearrange themselves to say "YAY", to symbolize the excitement of the party (but go back to their normal positions right after the scene cuts again).

Additionally, Pixar released a screenshot before the short was in theaters keying people in to one hidden item - Bonnie's toilet seat cover is patterned after Sulley's fur.

During the creation of the short, the team found themselves continually hiding references to one of Disney's most popular attractions through the 1990's, Captain EO. The 3D sci-fi film follows Michael Jackson and his crew of pseudo-misfits as they attempt to save the world from the evil Supreme Leader. If you need to brush up on your Captain EO references, you can watch the entire short film on YouTube.

Actor Tony Cox, not only voiced the hilarious character Chuck E. Duck but he too also has a connection to Captain EO as he played the clumsy elephant-like character, Hooter.

The musical robot that is located on the bathroom wall in Bonnie's bathroom was also inspired by Captain EO. In this video above we show you how Minor Domo from Captain EO and the musical robot from Partysaurus Rex mirror each other - be sure to listen closely at the sounds too as they have elements that match as well.

Gary Rydstrom (Former Pixarian who now works at Skywalker Sound), was the Sound Design Consultant on Partysaurus Rex also has a Captain EO connection - he voiced the character Furball.

In Partysaurus Rex when the water begins to go in the overflow drain - did you happen to recognize the menacing breathing sound? That sound happens to be a tweaked version of the actual recording of Darth Vader's breathing from Star Wars.

Wrapping up a few of the Captain EO references, Partysaurus Rex Sound Mixer, Gary Summers, (who also works at Skywalker Sound) mixed the sound for Captain EO as well.

Pixarians often lend their voices to characters on the film as it's in production - something that is known as "scratch voice". In some cases, those scratch vocals ends up in the final cut of the film. During Partysaurus Rex, director Mark Walsh lent his voice to numerous characters throughout the film.

The first character is Drips, the whale water spout.

The second character is the elephant toy that pushes Rex into the tub towards the end of the short and yells "Yeah!"

Do you know who voiced the iconic "What up Fishes?!" line? If you guessed Mark Walsh as well, you'd be right. Fans of the phrase may also be interested to learn that line was created by Pixar sketch/concept artist, Jay Shuster during a brainstorm session for the short. We love the collaboration between all departments on the film which makes each Pixar film that much more incredible.

In the same scene, you may have also noticed that there are two toys that were plucked right from Finding Nemo - the dolphin and Mr. Ray characters.

When the toys begin to "cross the scum line" as the tub overflows, you can see a familiar toy from a previous Toy Story Toon, Small Fry - that toy would be T-Bone. While we did hear that DJ Blujay may also make a quick appearance we were unable to find him after searching frame by frame we still couldn't spot him. If you happen to see him - be sure to let us know.

The AJAX Plumbing company that comes to Bonnie's house at the end of the short was a nod to both Editor, Axel Geddes and Production Manager, A.J. Riebli III.

We have so many favorite moments in the film, but one of our favorites would definitely be the detail of the bubbles right as Rex runs to Drips (the whale) and stops the flow of the bath but accidentally starts the shower. We know that the bubbles were a technical challenge for the team and looking at the above screenshot you can't deny that they certainly conquered the look of a real bubble bath.

The other element we love about that scene is Rex's comedic animated timing - the way he runs through the bubbles with his head tilted back and arms flailing was just perfect.

Towards the end of the film when the bathtub rave is in full swing, we love the colors and the numbers of characters that are in the scene above. We wish we knew the amount of render time that a scene like this would have taken - there is just so much packed in there. Finally, the sense of movement that you get (even from the screenshot above) and the lighting is just superb and really drew us in.

Have you seen any other hidden items from Partysaurus Rex? If so, leave a comment below or send us an email (info@pixarpost.com) and we'll be sure to update our post.

Want to watch Partysaurus Rex? You can watch the short included on the Monsters, Inc. (re-released) Blu Ray, or get the digital download of just the short on Amazon or iTunes.

Video Acceptance Speeches of the Monsters University & Toy Story of TERROR Annie Award Victories

$

0

Last night (February 1, 2014) the 41st Annual Annie Awards, hosted by Patrick Warburton were held at UCLA's Royce Hall in Los Angeles, California. The Annie Awards, held since 1972, honor the accomplishments of studios and individuals in the animation field and the 2014 awards continued this great tradition.

While many award shows have their share of comedic relief or little quarks that happen throughout the night, the beginning portion of the Annies was a bit of a confusing affair. Actress Cloris Leachman and actor Tom Kenny were the first presenters and it was a bit awkward, with Leachman interrupting many award winners and almost derailing the winner's thought process of who they were thanking. While it could have been funny for a split second, by the fourth award it was simply distracting.

As the Monsters U crew members walked to the stage, we really enjoyed hearing the MU school song play as they ascended to accept their awards - it was very much like graduating. It was also really great to see both Directors, Dan Scanlon and Angus MacLane, in the audience with their crew cheering them on and giving congratulatory hugs - it really shows that both films were a team effort and everyone involved was happy for each nomination and win. Be sure to view our compilation video of the Monsters U and Toy Story of Terror! acceptance speeches.

We were thrilled that Pixar Animation Studios took home five awards for the evening - however, there were a few awards that we were a little bummed that Pixar didn't win. I know, we are slightly biased when it comes to Pixar films, but we were really rooting for the Annie win for Production Design in an Animated Feature Production - for Ricky Nierva, Robert Kondo and Daisuke "Dice" Tsutsumi's work on bringing the monster world to life. In the end, Disney's Frozen team ultimately brought home the award - which was well deserved as they created a beautiful world from ice and snow, we were just hoping to see the Pixar team honored.

The award for Achievement in Character Design went to Dreamworks for The Croods. We really enjoyed Pixarian, Chris Sasaki's work and the detail he put into the characters on Monsters University. However, we were pleased to see that Carter Goodrich was on The Croods team and was awarded the Annie along with Takao Noguchi and Shane Prigmore. If you are unaware of Goodrich's work, you can see his amazing pencil sketches in many of the Pixar "Art of" books (Brave, Ratatouille and Finding Nemo). Interestingly enough, both Chris Sasaki and Carter Goodrich's work both really inspire us - Chris for his amazing character designs and quirky nature and Carter for his astounding pencil work.

It should be no surprise to anyone that we happen to really love the story behind Monsters University - and it was Hayao Miyazaki who took home the Best Writing in an Animated Feature for The Wind Rises. This was the other award that slightly disappointed us, as we really felt the team collaboration with the story team for Monsters U really outdid themselves and came up with an incredible relatable story, yet one that really captivated our imaginations.

Overall though, the evening was a great success for Pixar as they took home a total of five Annie Awards - two for Monsters University and three for their TV Special Toy Story of Terror!. Below are a list of the Pixarian award winners.

First-Look at Pixar's Newest Short: Party Central

Pixar's Party Central will be hitting theaters on March 21, 2014 ahead of Muppets Most Wanted, and to some of us, the brief wait may feel like an eternity to see our beloved Oozma Kappa characters on the big screen again. Well, Disney UK has just released a short clip (via YouTube) showing us just how the OK house will become Party Central!

The clip, driven by Mike Wazowski and Sulley, have the brilliant idea of bringing a door station into the OK house all while using code names for each other (beach ball and throw rug). They seem to have figured out a plan to make the OK house the best party around.

Pixar Post Party Central Kelsey Mann

In a recent interview with Moviefone, director Kelsey Mann shared some of his ideas while working as a Story Supervisor on Monsters University that he and his team were able to apply to make Party Central the raucous party it is.
Being from the story department, you guys must have had a million ideas about how this party was going to play out. Was there anything that didn't make it into the short that you desperately wanted to include?
It's funny... There's always stuff that doesn't make its way in, whether it's the movie or the short. But that's where the short came from -- from the movie. I remember, near the end, I always wanted to see their party. It's the first thing they say they want, this party. And I said, "We've got to have this in the movie! I don't care if it's in the credits. I want to see this party." The idea of doing a short came up and we thought that it was the perfect opportunity to pay off something that we wanted to do in the movie but couldn't find the right time and the right moment to do it. So it presented a perfect opportunity. When you work in story, you have these ideas that you had five years ago and they can always come back.
Was there anything that resurfaced in this?
Yeah actually... I don't want to give anything away but the ending came from an idea that we had while working on an earlier version of "Monsters University." It was a different version of the film and it was a great gag that we always loved, and when we started thinking about what could happen at the party, we thought, What if we bring back that gag from the old version of this movie? So things always come back. If it's a good idea, sometimes it's finding the right spot for it. And we found the perfect spot for it.

What else we thought was interesting from the Moviefone article was that this was the first Disney short since Roger Rabbit's, Roller Coaster Rabbit (1990), to receive a PG rating. This short must be packed with fast-paced antics for sure! As you can see from the additional screenshots below, Mike and Sulley are enjoying a can of "Blort" during a pre-party celebration and Sheri Squibbles doesn't look too thrilled when she sees the crazy party going on at her home.

For even more information from Mann's interview, be sure to read the full interview on Moviefone - it is a great read!

We can't wait to see the rest of this hilarious and fun new Pixar short by first-time director Kelsey Mann and the rest of the Party Central team!

Composer Michael Giacchino Working on Score for Ratatouille Ride in Disneyland Paris

Oscar-winning Composer Michael Giacchino is no stranger when it comes to enhancing Pixar films with his incredible musical talent and it was a pleasant surprise today when he tweeted a photo stating that he was working on the score for the new Ratatouille themed ride set to open this Summer in Disneyland Paris.

The new Ratatouille themed dark ride called, Ratatouille: L’Aventure Totalement Toquée de Rémy (loosely translated to Ratatouille: The Adventure of Zany Remy) is set to open this Summer along with other Ratatouille based shops, boutiques as well as a rat-scale restaurant.

What you may not know is that Giacchino has already tapped into the theme park world, having complimented many theme park rides including Luigi's Flying Tires in Cars Land at Disney's California Adventure.

Giacchino most recently worked with Pixar on their first 30-minute television special, Toy Story of TERROR!, which aired in October of 2013. As we dove into the Toy Story of TERROR! soundtrack we were reminded of Giacchino's knack for creating characters through his musical notes rather than a visual display. An example of this comes from an expert from our soundtrack review:
The track, "Ballad of Combat Carl" is one of the only character themes that we're introduced to in the soundtrack with brassy, militant touches that truly let you know that Carl is a war hero who's seen his share of battles.
We can't help but wonder if Michael will also score Pixar's next television special Toy Story That Time Forgot as well - I guess only time will tell.

Exciting New Details Surrounding 'La Place de Remy' in Disneyland Paris

Photo via Disneyland Paris

Today during a press presentation at Disneyland Paris more details surrounding the new Ratatouille themed ride and land (appropriately named La Place de Remy) were released. Previously, we had reported on the name of the ride as well as speculation that the ride vehicles would be on a new innovative trackless system, but now we have a lot of new information.

While the Disney imagineers work tirelessly to keep surprising guests it was interesting to hear how much collaboration between Disney and Pixar was done to make La Place de Remy 100% authentic to the original film.

Pixar sculptor Jerome Ranft working on the Ratatouille Ride Vehicles
"[This is] by far the most advanced and sophisticated thing we've ever done from a ride integration standpoint. It will offer guests a totally immersive experience into a Disney•Pixar adventure".
     - Joe Schott, Senior Vice President & Chief Operating Principal

The presentation also gave a quick mention surrounding the Ratatouille themed restaurant. This new restaurant will no doubt be yet another crowing achievement in Disney Imagineering as guests will be transported to feel like they are rat-size as they dine on saucer cups once they step inside (as pictured above).

All of these exciting new details surrounding La Place de Remy have us wondering if perhaps there will be a Colette, Linguini or even a Chef Skinner meet and greet area. We also think that a great addition to the land would be Pompidou the Health Inspector's car parked near the Ratatouille ride or near the restaurant. There are so many great ideas we could come up and we're sure you have some ideas too - be sure to share your thoughts with us and other Pixar fans on the Pixar Post Forum.

You can view the presentation thanks to DLRPWelcome.

New Cars Toon - Radiator Springs 500.5 Coming This Fall?

If you are a fan of Pixar toons, shorts and specials - 2014 is the year for you! With the already confirmed Monsters University inspired short, Party Central, hitting theaters on March 21 and the Toy Story That Time Forget TV special slated for this upcoming holiday season - it seems that the Cars franchise may also have a spot in the 2014 roster as well.

During the New York 2014 Toy Fair a spokesperson from Mattel stated that a new Cars Toon will debut this fall and will be called Cars RS 500.5. We were surprised to hear this candid chat about a new Cars Toon as Pixar is usually very tight-lipped on their upcoming projects - especially ones that they have yet to confirm. Since this was also mentioned by a Mattel representative, we can also expect to see a Cars die cast line for the series.

The video can be seen by clicking here (via Inside The Magic) at time mark 4:42.

Speculation on this short was first announced on a Cars die cast collector site, called Take5ADay back in December 2013. The rumored description of the toon is that Lighting McQueen and other off-road racers (including Desert Rally racers and 4x4 type vehicles) go to iconic race locations.

Back in late October we also reported that Michael Wallis, the voice of Sheriff, mentioned in an interview (available to listen to here) that he was working on a new Cars film that traveled up Route 99. While the Wallis rumor hinted at a new Cars feature film it is also possible that Wallis was speaking of the Stockton 99 Speedway in Stockton, California - which features a dirt racing track and was actually working on this new Cars Toon.

Again, while nothing yet has been announced by Pixar we can only imagine that after the theatrical release of Party Central we'll soon hear more about this Cars Toon.

You can chat about the Toon and let us know your predictions about the story in the Pixar Post Forum.

Could a Linguini Face Character be Coming to Disneyland Paris?

The new Ratatouille themed land "La Place de Remy" (set to open this Summer in Disneyland Paris) could be home to more of the films' characters other than just Remy. In a recent online entertainment audition posting for Disneyland Paris, it seems the park is looking to cast a Linguini face character - making this the first male Pixar face character to appear within the Disney Parks (the first two Pixar face character were Merida and Queen Elinor).

Disneyland Paris Official Audition Advertisement via DLRPToday
 with our translation below.

With "La Place de Remy" opening Summer of 2014, the Linguini face character could be making his big debut for the Grand Opening of the newly themed land. Although guests typically are clamoring to meet the Disney Princess face characters, we can definitely see Linguini being a very popular guest meet-and-greet opportunity - especially if Linguini is a rolling character throughout the land, similar to Gaston in the new Fantasyland at Walt Disney World, Florida.

While nothing has yet to be confirmed by Disney, we wait patiently with excitement to learn more about this new addition to the Disney Parks.

Google Highlights Andrew Stanton's 'Story Clues' in Commercial During the 86th Annual Oscar's

The 2014 (86th Annual) Academy Awards may have been absent of a Pixar nomination this year, but they still didn't disappoint with a few Pixar surprises scattered throughout the broadcast  (even during the commercials). Host, Ellen Degeneres, joked that the clips shown in an "animation heroes" segment were a little light on Finding Nemoand Google surprised us with a simple, yet inspiring commercial which showed clips of young filmmakers searching for tips on how to create their own masterpieces - all while including audio excerpts from the astounding TED Talk speech (Clues to a great story) by the brilliant Pixarian, Andrew Stanton.

If you have watched Stanton's TED Talk previously (originally from February 2012) you may notice that the commercial seamlessly stitched together six separate "clues" that he discusses during the presentation. The audio from the commercial states,
We all love stories - we’re born for them. They can’t be artificially evoked. It doesn’t always mean plot or fact. They aren’t an actual exact science, that’s what’s so special about stories - they’re not predictable. It’s capturing a truth from your experience. It could cross the barriers of time, real and imagined, expressing values you personally feel deep down to your core. And that’s the first story lesson I ever learned.

To add to the emotion, the Google commercial also features the second half of the track titled, Ending (by Thomas Newman), featured on the Finding Nemo complete score soundtrack given to the cast and crew of the project. The song Ending is similar, yet not the same as the Nemo Egg (Main Theme)on the standard soundtrack as well.

As of now, there have been a total of three Pixar-themed Mondo posters released as a sneak peek to whet every Disney•Pixar fans appetite. The released posters were designed by artist Kevin Tong who designed both the UP and Wall-E posters and artist Tom Whalen who designed The Incredibles poster.

In a recent interview with Wired, Mondo CEO Justin Ishmael stated:
“Disney has a special way of bringing out the magic in all of us...We hope our work sparks the imagination of both Disney and Mondo fans.”
Exclusive Mondo Poster by Tom Whalen via Wired.

Whalen described on his website that he had been assigned The Incredibles about three years ago (stating it is one of his favorite films) but due to a licensing issue had to "table" the project. When the "Nothing's Impossible" project was announced Whalen was given his second chance to bring his vision to life and has said he thinks that the current final rendered image for The Incredibles poster turned out better than he thinks it would have been three years ago.

This story about Whalen's journey to create this "Incredible" poster is perfect to join the "Nothing's Impossible" project as he proved nothing was impossible - it may have taken time and patience but nothing was impossible.

First Look: Party Central Theatrical Poster Revealed & Additional Clip Released

"Fuzzy Rainbow to Beach Ball, I'm sending some your way!" - Art

Today we have been treated to a new clip from Pixar's newest short Party Centralas well as a preview of the short's theatrical poster (courtesy of Fandango). This highly anticipated short is an energentic experience with an original twist on the fraternity and college parties that we all remember.

The new clip showcases how the Oozma Kappa brothers gather their own crowd to create the party of the year! While the clip is less than a minute in length it does feature one of our favorite lines from the film - delivered from the blue monster pictured above stating how a girl at the party couldn't keep her eyes off of him (all five eyes that is).

One thing that we noticed on the poster was the text, "a Monsters University short", allowing for speculation that perhaps this will be the first of many Monsters University Toons (similar to the Toy Story and Cars Toons). We have discussed the idea of Pixar continuing the MU franchise and diving into more story lines with these beloved characters on The Pixar Post Podcast and we can only hope that we will be able to revisit the MU Campus in another future short.

Party Central will be released on March 21, 2014 ahead of Muppets Most Wanted.  Be sure to share your thoughts on the new clip and poster in The Pixar Post Forum.

PartySaurus Rex eBook Now Available on iTunes

Fans of the Pixar short PartySaurus Rex will be excited to learn that an eBook based on the bath time rave party has now been released in the Apple iBooks Store. Released on February 11th, the eBook retails for only $3.99 and is 24 pages of vibrant stills from the short - including read-along audio.

Disney Press enhanced the look of the book by creating a vibrant combination of color, sizes and fonts when it came to the text of the book - we feel that this only adds to the excitement and party-feel of the storyline.

The book flows effortlessly and stays true to the original short - although there is one important line that is missing from the eBook - the ever iconic, "What up Fishes?!" While the line is omitted from the story, it was great to see it included on the back cover.

As a side note, this book was originally scheduled for a print release (January 2014) but was canceled just before it hit shelves (prior to the digital version even being announced). We're so happy that the digital version has been released and the iPad might be even better than the print version could have been - the saturated colors and hilarious screenshots really pop on the iPad's screen. All we can say now is grab your iPad and read along as Rex parties in this sudsy adventure...oh, but don't read it in the tub in case you drop it in the water!

Be sure to pick up the Disney Press Partysaurus Rex digital book in the Apple iBooks store now!

Toy Story of Terror! Sleepwell Motel Concept Art from Paul Abadilla

Last October, Pixar ventured into new territory with the release of their first 30-minute television special, Toy Story of Terror!. The special almost unanimously received high praise and even set up Pixar to plan their first Christmastime special, Toy Story That Time Forgot, coming this holiday season. But before any full-length film, short film or television special can be enjoyed by fans everywhere, a large amount of detailed work goes into prepping the story, lighting, character designs, sets designs and so much more.

Last week, Pixarian Paul Abadilla, released some great set design work that he created for the Sleepwell Motel in Toy Story of Terror! and we wanted to pass along this great artwork. If you notice, you'll see so many familiar elements from the special - The basket that Mr. Jones (iguana) places his found treasures in (along with the bell on the floor), the cork board where Ron (manager) puts pictures of the items he has up for auction on eBid, as well as many more gems. I also love all the typical elements you'd find in a roadside motel, like the rack of local attractions (in the lower left corner of the bottom image).

Paul captured the natural light of the scenes perfectly - for instance, if you look in the bottom image again, you'll see how the light from the window on the left spills across the room and slowly falls off (take a close look at the drop ceiling and the details there). We love when Pixar employees share their early concept work, especially for shorts and specials like this since they're often not compiled in books like the "Art of" series that are released alongside feature films.

For more of Paul's work, be sure to check out our other posts involving his work on Monsters University and The Blue Umbrella.

Details Surrounding the Upcoming Short 'Radiator Springs 500-and-a-Half'

$
0
0

Today thanks to Entertainment Weekly (and the keen eye of our reader, Rachel), we have more details from the Spring release of Pixar's newest short, Radiator Springs 500½. Along with the release, the EW article also points out that RS500½ will also kick off a new series of shorts called, "Tales From Radiator Springs". (The second film in the series will be called To Protect and Serve which we discussed a few weeks ago and appears to now be slated for a 2015 release instead of fall of 2014.)

The official synopsis from Disney Insider for the six minute short is -
A “leisurely drive” planned in honor of Radiator Springs’ town founder, Stanley, turns precarious as Baja pros descend on the town and challenge Lightning McQueen to an off-road race. Meanwhile, the townsfolk, led by a Stanley-costumed Mater, enjoy the planned “leisurely drive” to retrace Stanley’s original frontier route. Thinking they’re on the same course, a wrong turn sends McQueen and the Baja pros on a treacherously wild bid for survival. The misunderstanding leaves the racing professionals in awe of the “legend” of Stanley: the Original Off-Road Racer.

In the article, Gibbs also fills us in on some background and inspiration surrounding the vehicles that we'll see in the short.
Gibbs, (Scott) Morse, and the Pixar team had a lot of fun with the new characters, who were inspired by the racers who compete in Mexico’s famous Baja 1000 race. “They have all these different classes for that race, so we tried to pick the most interesting cars,” says Gibbs. “So there’s four of them: a Baja Bug, a Class-1 dune buggy, a Meyers Manx dune buggy, and a trophy truck, the big money ones, you know, with huge suspension and huge wheels.”
So, although an official release date has yet to be announced, we do know that the short will not premiere on the Disney Channel as was discussed at the 2013 D23 Expo, but will instead premiere as part of Disney's new app "Disney Movies Anywhere". The new app, as highlighted in the video embedded below was originally thought to only be a portal to stream digital copies of your Disney/Pixar/Marvel movies - but with the announcement that RS500½ will premiere in the app, it seems that Disney may have more ways to utilize the app in the future.

If you don't already have the Disney Movies Anywhere app yet, be sure to download it now and login (Free) before the short is released - we'll be sure to let our readers know what the official release date is once it's announced.

As a side note I seriously can't wait until this die cast series hits stores - and like I said before, I hope they have rubber tires!

Chat about your thoughts on the upcoming short in the comments below or on the Pixar Post Forum topic dedicated to RS500½.

Updated - Dice Tsutsumi's Third Annual Artists Help Japan Auction

Updated March 14: This year's Artists Help Japan Auction has ended. This third annual auction had five exclusive items up for bidding which raised just about $1,600 for Peace Winds America. Congratulations to artist Dice Tsutsumi on this great accomplish and we look forward to next year's Artists Help Japan auction.

For the last several years, Pixar artist Dice Tsutsumi has continued to support victims of the earthquake that greatly impacted Japan three years ago through his series of eBay auctions that raise money and awareness for Artists Help Japan. Last year, we posted previews of the outstanding auctions that were offered as well (including an amazing Brave crew blanket we won last year and a Cars jacket that we won two years ago). This years auctions are once again packed with one-of-a-kind original artwork as well as an exclusive Monsters University crew gift which rivals the exclusivity of many of the previous auctions to date.

Below are a collection of some (and certainly not all) of the items that are available for auction - click any of the links (below the images) to head to directly to eBay, or to view all of the auction items under this years Artists Help Japan auctions, click here.

Click here to be taken directly to eBay to bid on the Monsters U print

The Monsters University piece (ending in just a few hours) is a Limited Edition print (this is #1 of 1250) and was only given to Pixar employees in 2013. The auction also comes with an original sketch by Dice Tsutsumi of Mike and Sulley which was an early sketch Dice created prior to the illustrations printed for the crew gift. Not only is the crew gift an amazing piece to have but to have an original piece of art from Dice himself, now that is an invaluable to Pixar fans. In fact, Dice's work at the Monsters U charity screening of young Mike Wazowski even inspired us to create our own original piece, so you can bet we'll be placing a bid or two on this piece.

Dice Tsutsumi's original (and beautiful) watercolor painting on a moleskin sketchbook is another item that is up for bid currently. We had originally seen this amazing watercolor when Dice posted it to his Facebook page a few months back and we were instantly taken with the beauty and feel that he masterly portrays in his work.

As mentioned previously, there are several more items listed for auction as well so be sure to check out the complete list of items on the Artists Help Japan eBay auction page.

Below is some additional information regarding the Artists Help Japan Mission:
On March 11, 2011, a magnitude 9.0 earthquake struck Japan, the most powerful know earthquake to ever hit the country. The shock caused extensive flooding, fires, infrastructure damage and multiple nuclear accidents. It has become the most expensive natural disaster in world history.
3-years later, we are reminded much progress has been made but there is still much work to be done.
Artists Help Japan is a charity movement initiated by Dice Tsutsumi, an art director at Pixar Animation Studios. Artists Help Japan will host an exclusive auction on eBay, of original artwork, extremely rare memorabilia, and autographed gifts.
100% of the proceeds will be donated to Peace Winds America, one of the most effective NGOs in japan. It is responding to the immediate needs of survivors as well as short-term to long-term recovery projects undertaken by the affected communities in Japan.
We believe that artists have a special role, and responsibility, to contribute to the society, especially when in need. Please join us for this exciting auction.

The Pixar Braintrust - An Excerpt from Ed Catmull's Creativity, Inc. and Announcing Our Pixar Book Club

Ed Catmull image © Pixar - Creativity, Inc. cover courtesy Random House

The image of Buzz Lightyear conducting an orchestra is a perfect choice for the cover of Ed Catmull's upcoming book, Creativity, Inc. - symbolically representing Catmull as one of the many leaders within Pixar's walls which helped direct and shape the company into what it is today. Creativity, Inc. (releasing on April 8, 2014) is pitched as "a book for managers who want to lead their employees to new heights, a manual for anyone who strives for originality, and the first-ever, all-access trip into the nerve center of Pixar Animation".

What this means to me is that whether you're seeking motivation, management skills or just want to learn more about the beloved company, this book will be a great fit. In fact, if you look at some of the early reviews on Amazon the general consensus is that the book is perfectly geared towards fans of Pixar more so than solely being a management-centric book.

Pixar Post Insider and the Pixar Book Club

The release of this book has actually motivated us to start a Pixar Book Club which will be available to members of Pixar Post Insider (Additional details coming soon). In the meantime be sure to preorder your copy of Creativity, Inc. and get ready to discuss the book from cover to cover soon! The book will be available upon release in hard cover, digital formats as well as an audio book.

Excerpt from Creativity, Inc.

Just a few days ago, the team at Fast Company posted an exclusive excerpt from the upcoming book alongside two additional conversations with the Pixar and Disney Animation Studio President. I cannot recommend reading the full excerpt enough to our readers - plainly spoken, it provides amazing insights into the development of the Pixar Braintrust, development of a creative culture and even takes a look at a braintrust meeting itself (for Inside Out). It covers amazing moments in the development of WALL•E as well as the development of the pivotal moment from Toy Story 3 where Lotso is overthrown by Big Baby.

Below are a few of my favorite portion of the Fast Company excerpt -

Candor

Candor could not be more crucial to our creative process. Why? Because early on, all of our movies suck. That's a blunt assessment, I know, but I choose that phrasing because saying it in a softer way fails to convey how bad the first versions really are. I'm not trying to be modest or self-effacing. Pixar films are not good at first, and our job is to make them so--to go, as I say, "from suck to not-suck."

Addressing Problems With the Film

How do you get a director to address a problem he or she cannot see? The answer depends, of course, on the situation. The director may be right about the potential impact of his central idea, but maybe he simply hasn't set it up well enough for the Braintrust. Maybe he doesn't realize that much of what he thinks is visible on-screen is only visible in his own head. Or maybe the ideas presented in the reels he shows the Braintrust won't ever work, and the only path forward is to blow something up or start over. No matter what, the process of coming to clarity takes patience and candor.

Brad Bird's Comment To Pete Docter Regarding 'Inside Out'

"Pete, I want to give you a huge round of applause: This is a frickin' big idea to try to make a movie about," Brad continued, his voice full of affection. "I've said to you on previous films, ‘You're trying to do a triple backflip into a gale force wind, and you're mad at yourself for not sticking the landing. Like, it's amazing you're alive.' This film is the same. So, huge round of applause." Everyone clapped. Then Brad added, "And you're in for a world of hurt."

I was also pleased that there were a few unknown pieces of information regarding the 2015 release, Inside Out. For instance, I wasn't aware that the character design for the emotion of sadness was based on a teardrop (you can see it if you turn her character upside down). Additionally, the excerpt also mentions how much Pete Docter loves the way that the film opens.

Inside Out character lineup - Fear, Sadness, Joy, Disgust & Anger

Fast Company also has two additional articles which highlight how Pixar used their creative structure to help guide Disney to success with Frozenas well as a great discussion in which Catmull talks about how Pixar will hit roadblocks no matter how prepared they may be.

Ordering Creativity, Inc.

Pixar Working on 3D Re-Releases and Exploring New Technologies

Following the 3D re-releases of Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc., Josh Hollander (Pixar's Director of 3D Production) stated that the studio is currently working on the 3D re-release of The Incredibles and Ratatouille while speaking at the 3D Creative Summit. In an article via ScreenDaily, Hollander shares some insight as well as discusses the challenges the team is facing with 3D technology.
“Right now we’re working on The Incredibles, which is a lot of fun in 3D....It’s been an interesting challenge to work on technology because - while the film was released 10 years ago - the technology is even older as it took four years to make...We have a version of Ratatouille, which works really well in 3D and we’re trying to figure out exactly what the release strategy for that will be.”
In the article Hollander also discusses some of the new technologies that Pixar Animation Studios is exploring: High Frame Rate, Ultra High Definition 4K and High Dynamic Range (HDR).
“Of those, the High Dynamic Range seems most interesting to us because there are entire worlds of color that we’ve not been able to show you and not be able to represent in our films because of the limited color space of the display technologies...4K is also interesting to us - that added clarity. High Frame Rate isn’t something we’ve been digging into yet, we doing some testing but it’s not banging down our door and begging for us to use it right now.”

Details surrounding Pixar's next feature film, Inside Out, have still been kept pretty much under wraps - though Hollander did mention that he and his team are working on the 3D for the film he describes as "pure magic."
“We’re looking at how translucency and opacity is used, which plays really well in 3D...There’s not much more I can share about it but it will build upon our use of 3D, supporting ‘emotions’ and emotional moments.”
While the details are vague, it was nice to be reminded of the hard work that is going into Inside Out, which is set for a theatrical release in June 2015.

Breaking News - The Incredibles 2 and Cars 3 in development

$

What would you say if it was confirmed that a sequel was in the works for The Incredibles? What if I also said that Cars 3 was also in development? Well, during the 2014 Annual Disney Shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed some amazing and really exciting news - that both of those films are in the works.

I think a collective cheer was heard across the internet today as a sequel to The Incredibles has been the number one requested sequel from Pixar for years. Heck, we even dedicated a portion of a podcast episode (#12) to predicting whether an Incredibles sequel would pick up where the story left off, or if the story would take place further in the future.

Although the news of an Incredibles sequel will cause many to cheer, the news of another Cars sequel will equally cause some jeers (some, not us). However you feel about the Cars franchise personally, you can't deny that the franchise has been a success overall - in fact, it continues to be one of the most popular among younger fans (and many adults like us as well). We personally welcome and are ecstatic about another Cars movie as we love the characters, the heart, and the world of Cars in general. Heck, who can deny that Cars Land in Disney California Adventure isn't one of the most jaw dropping recreations of a movie environment ever?

Also, don't forget that we already have a few details surrounding Cars 3 that were leaked via Michael Wallis (voice of Sheriff in the films) last year during an interview. According to Wallis, Cars 3 will take place along route 99 this time around and get back to the heart that was part of the first Cars movie. Read even more details about Cars 3 and listen to a clip (also posted below) of the Wallis' interview in our post.

Although we don't know any details regarding release dates or who will be directing (Cars 3 only, The Incredibles is being developed by Brad Bird), we'd have to assume that they won't be slated until at least 2017 or 2018. So, what are your thoughts? Which sequel are you anticipating more? Leave a comment below, or expand on your thoughts in the Pixar Post Forum regarding the new movie announcement.

If you are a fan of Pixar, you know that there are only a few ways to visit Pixar Animation Studios and this is one of the great ways to support the Cartoon Art Museum as well as be invited in the illustrious studio gates. If you're thinking about attending the CAM event, our friend Jeff (from This Day in Pixar) has attended previously and wrote a great article summarizing his experience.
