Disney Infinity 2.0 Press Event Details - Marvel, Merida, Stitch and Maleficient

$

After the very successful launch of Disney Infinity last year, there was no doubt that a second version of the game would be in the works. Today, during the Disney Infinity 2.0 press event, we got a look at the next version of the ever-popular game, along with a few of the upcoming figures and playsets. Although today's event focused on the Marvel Super Heroes (releasing fall of 2014), Disney•Pixar have no reason to worry as additional Disney and Pixar figures will be coming out after the initial launch. In fact, you can even spot a few familiar faces hidden in the Marvel launch trailer - Merida from Brave, Stitch and Maleficient all make appearances.

NEW FEATURES

Along with any new release typically comes new and improved features and Disney Infinity 2.0 did not disappoint. (It should also be noted that Disney Infinity 2.0 is fully compatible with all of the Disney Infinity 1.0 characters, toy boxes, base and power discs.)
  • Skill Tree - Characters will vary more in their abilities and strengths. As you "level up" a character's experience you gain points which you can assign to different attributes to the figure (for example, if you were using Captain America, as you go from a level 1 to level 2 in experience you get 1 point to assign to his speed, strength, super jump or shields).

Ed Catmull's PBS Interview with Tavis Smiley

Disney Animation and Pixar President, Ed Catmull, recently sat down with Tavis Smiley for a 14 minute interview during the late-night PBS talk show. The discussion touches on several moments from Pixar's history (the relative ease with with Toy Story 3 was created) and even touched on the recent successes of Disney's Frozen. But the real power of the interview comes when Ed talks about bolstering a team, seeking creativity and what happens if the team synergy isn't clicking like it should.

Additionally, we really appreciated the honest discussion surrounding failure in an organization. Ed mentioned that although failure may be a hot-topic in today's business world, we may not be able to be truly honest about tackling failure due to our earlier life lessons. Of course, many of these lessons, insights and talking points are also discussed in Catmull's new book, Creativity, Inc., which we are currently reading as part of our Pixar Post Book Club. Join in the discussions and let us know your thoughts - read more.

Radiator Springs 500 and a Half Logo

UPDATED: The full 6:20 second short is now available to watch on Disney Movies Anywhere - enjoy! Our full review of the short can be read here.

Well racing fans, after awaiting the release of Pixar's off-road adventure for months, we now have an official start release date - May 20, 2014 - yes, that soon. In the Radiator Springs 500½ clip released by Yahoo Movies, we find Mater decked out as a Hawaiian hula dancer, spouting off directions quite speedily. In fact he tells the pack of five racers to...
Head right out of town, turn right off the main street there and go left there at the tractors and then you head right over them rollin' hills, right past the cool-pool-of-tranquility, right through the beautiful tail light caverns, right through the enchanted forest and you's right back at home!

SYNOPSIS

As a reminder, the short takes place during a Founders Day celebration on the streets of Radiator Springs.

Our Exclusive Review of Radiator Springs 500½ - The Characters, the Die Cast Cars & The Details

Radiator Springs 500½

Pixar's latest tale, Radiator Springs 500½, is packed full of fast-paced action, eye-catching camera angles and puns atop of puns. All this adventure is balanced perfectly against a leisurely stroll as the townspeople retrace Stanley's original frontier route as he discovered Radiator Springs. Before you read any further though, if you haven't already watched the six minute and twenty second short film yet, be sure to head over Disney Movies Anywhere and watch it for free.

PLOT SUMMARY

The town of Radiator Springs is just about to kick off their annual "Stanley Days" celebration (in honor of their town's founder), when Mater spots a cloud of dust in the distance. A group of baja racers has sped into town looking for Lightning McQueen (having heard he was the fastest race car around). Shortly thereafter the baja racers insult Stanley prompting Lightning to utter, "Looks like our leisurely drive just turned into a race".

Mater informs the racers of their course with a series of extremely quick and confusing directions which sets up the ensuing chaos. While the racers are speeding their way across the terrain, Mater leads the rest of the gang on the relaxing frontier path. When Mater and crew arrive back in town, they wonder where the racers are (they should be back by now). As the racers speed back into town after dark, they are humbled by Stanley's bravery - they can't understand how a car like Stanley could have traveled on such a treacherous journey (not knowing that they took a completely different path).

THE CHARACTERS

Flo in her "Roaring 20's" Gatsby outfit
(perfect pun on cars having 20" wheels")

We had previously mentioned how excited we were to see a few of our favorite Radiator Springs characters with new paint jobs, but after seeing all of the characters, we really think Pixar did an outstanding job giving the entire gang an early 1900's look (since Stanley founded Radiator Springs in 1909). At one point, Flo even jokes that she's, "roaring her 20's" as Lightning McQueen asks, "Everyone dressed for adventure?" That was just one of many puns which are spread across the entire short - in fact, we love the quirky nature of the jokes as the Rimshot Pitty rolls into frame hitting his drums with the signature, "ba-dum-crash".

Michael Giacchino to Score Inside Out - Video Interview

Michael Giacchino, the brilliant mastermind behind the beautiful scores of Pixar's, La Luna, Up and Ratatouille (among many others) has recently revealed that he will be scoring Inside Out for the studio as well. During a pre-concert question and answer session on May 24 for the Star Trek Into Darkness: Live to Projection session (held at the KKL Lucerne concert hall in Switzerland), the moderator asked Giacchino what he was going to be working on next. As expected, Michael is quite busy and after some initial comments mentioned that,
...I'm going to go onto a film called Tomorrowland directed by Brad Bird and that has George Clooney in it. And then after that I go onto a film called Inside Out which is directed by Pete Docter, who did the movie Up for Pixar and then after that I go right onto Jurassic World, so basically I'm working from now until next May.

The entire Q&A session can be viewed on YouTube (courtesy of Stefan Schuler), although the mention of his upcoming projects doesn't start until 20:29 into the interview. Additionally, there are some interesting questions from the audience as well where they ask if there is a difference between scoring live-action and animation. Michael mentions that there's really not a difference and in both instances he says that it's "all made up" and noted that Superman is no more real than a rat that wants to cook. Merida & Maleficent Disney Infinity 2.0 Sneak Peek - Updated

Photo from D23 event courtesy of Travis Denman

Earlier today the official Disney Infinity Twitter account hinted (yet confirming at the same time) that Merida will indeed be a character in Disney Infinity 2.0. Although we know Merida will be included in the game, it hasn't been confirmed if she will be a singular Toy Box figure or if there will be a Brave playset as well - although from what we're hearing from the D23 Maleficent pre-screening and Disney Infinity event, it appears that she will be a Toy Box figure only.

Back on April 30th, during the Disney Infinity 2.0 Press Event, we noticed a few hidden characters in the background of the trailer that was shown to the crowd. While all of the characters were centered around the Marvel franchise at the press event, it was a nice surprise to spot Merida (as well as Maleficent and Stitch), as we've been chatting about a Brave playset since the first version of Disney Infinity was released.

Disney Infinity 2.0 Brave Merida Figure

Earlier in the week we were treated to a sneak peek of the Merida and Maleficent characters which will be included along with the release of Disney Infinity 2.0 this fall. Additional details and high resolution images were released for the two characters this morning and just like the previous game figures, the design and details are amazing. We have to say that the small, clear blue Will-'o-the-wisp at the feet of Merida's figure is an amazing detail and we certainly hope it finds it way into the game as well.

Disney Infinity 2 Maleficent Figure

We have also learned that Merida and Maleficent will be Toy Box figures only and will not be a part of a Play Set. Keep in mind that the Toy Box mode for Disney Infinity 2.0 is completely revamped and will contain mini-missions and in-game abilities than ever before - so the experience should be completely enhanced from the previous version. That being said, we were still hoping for an entire Brave Play Set but we're still happy Merida will be included in the 2.0 release of the game.

Big Changes Around The Corner for Pixar's RenderMan

$
0
0

Fans of Pixar can readily recall their most memorable moments from their favorite Pixar film, right? They may even be able to recite lines from their favorite character since they've watched the movie so many times. But what the average Pixar fan may not know about is how all of the geometric shapes that make up a scene, textures, lighting and much, much more end up in a format that we can all enjoy on the big screen. That's where Pixar's RenderMan comes into play. Without getting too complex, rendering is the process of taking the many elements of a computer model and generating a still image of those elements.

The upcoming release of RenderMan will deliver powerful new features
built upon the new RIS Framework.

Pixar is consistently setting the bar to the highest of standards and with the upcoming release of RenderMan, Pixar is certainly keeping those standards in mind. The takeaways from their latest announcement are "Advanced global illumination and a radically different pricing structure". In fact, the pricing structure was cut by 75% for commercial licenses and is now (for the first time) free for non-commercial use. What's even more remarkable is that there are no watermarkings, limitations or other rendering time limits imposed on the non-commercial use version either.

The news that their RenderMan software would be free for non-commercial use should come to no surprise as the studio prides itself on technological advancements, education and sharing their passion and knowledge with others. Pixar believes that limitations on software access have become an impediment on the development of the production industry, and that universal access and a set of common standards and practices can only stimulate greater growth and development.

PRESS RELEASE DETAILS

Representing years of research and development, Pixar Animation Studios today (May 29) announced a series of important innovations in the latest version of its forthcoming Academy Award®-winning RenderMan software that will radically impact the way film imagery is rendered and accessed by everyone. This generational shift in RenderMan establishes an entirely new modular rendering architecture called RIS that provides highly optimized methods for simulating the transport of light through multiple state of the art algorithms, including an advanced Unidirectional Path Tracer and a Bidirectional Path Tracer with Progressive Photon Mapping (also known as VCM). Along with major feature and performance enhancements, physically-based, artist-friendly workflows, progressive re-rendering, and the established advantages of RenderMan’s traditional REYES architecture, RenderMan now offers two rendering modes within one unified environment, providing the most advanced, versatile, and flexible rendering system available.

Be sure to stay tuned to this post as we'll be updating though out the day with any additional details that are revealed.

Initial details surrounding Pete Docter's Inside Out presentation at the 2014 Annecy International Film Festival have been popping up online early this morning. So far, we have spotted what appears to be the new logo for the film (shown above) as well as a pre-printed concept drawing of Joy and Sadness that was given to attendees of the festival.  As always, be sure to chat about today's news in the Forum as well and share your thoughts on the movie.

Update - This french article from Cloneweb (French movie site) mentions some of the details of the screening. We have summarized the translated notes below.
  • An approximately 5-minute clip was shown of the introduction of the movie showcasing the birth of Riley and showcasing her early years as she experiences her emotions (Fear, Anger, Sadness, Joy and Disgust). The article also mentions that you can feel Riley's tastebuds as she tried broccoli for the first time (and she doesn't enjoy it).
  • It was also noted from the presentation that Riley, although a character in the movie, serves the story in the same way Andy does in Toy Story. She's the conduit to get us into the story of the emotions inside.

The official Disney Store Instagram just posted this great photo of a highly detailed version of Cars star, Lightning McQueen. According to the post, this will be a new series (Cars Artist Series Collection) of releases designed under the guidance of Pixar Animation Studio. In fact, this first series was designed by Cars veteran, Pixar artist and creator of the Motorama car show at Pixar's studio.

The detail in Lightning's engine is fantastic and the burnt ends of the exhaust pipes is a great little detail as well - we can't wait to see more.

So, here's what we know:

  • The series will be released online and in "select" Disney stores starting on Monday, June 16 (though some stores have them on shelves already).
  • The cars are Die-cast

What we don't know...yet (and will update as we learn more):

  • Limited edition or broad release
  • Cost is unknown yet
  • Physical size of the cars
  • Will the cars have working lights

Updated:
After taking a look at eBay, we spotted a few of these showing up. There have been reports of some of these in stores as well, but the release date is still technically supposed to be June 15. You can check out the auction directly on eBay here.

Thanks to our reader, Kevin, for the heads up on the upcoming release.

Toy Story of TERROR! Video Toy Review of Combat Carl, Glow Buzz Lightyear and Jessie figures

$

0

Toy Story of TERROR! scared its way into our living rooms last October (2013) as Pixar's first 30-minute television special. Fans were excited to view brand new content in their family rooms from the Toy Story gang and loved getting introduced to a few new characters, like the war-tried Combat Carl. His raw intensity and energy solidified him as a mainstay of the film - you can't think of Toy Story of TERROR! and not think of Carl.

Because of this, we were very excited to spot the Toy Story of TERROR! gift pack (from Mattel) finding its way online (we've yet to see it in our local stores). The set, featuring Combat Carl, Jessie and glow-in-the-dark Buzz Lightyear is amazing. Be sure to check out our detailed video review and unboxing of the set (as well as details on the included DVD).

The best part of the set to us is that Combat Carl's right hand can come off to look just like it was in the short. The figures measure in at approximately 4-to-4.5" in height and have moving arms, legs and heads. The set is recommended for ages 3-and-up and can be purchased directly on Amazon. Additionally, the set also comes with a bonus DVD featuring the entire Small Fry short film as well as a two-and-a-half minute clip from Toy Story of TERROR!.

Photo © Pixar Post - Do you follow us on Instagram?

Don't forget to order your copy of Toy Story of TERROR!on Blu Ray or DVD as well (releasing on August 19, 2014). For more details on the Blu Ray and DVD, be sure to check out our previous post highlighting all of the extras. Additionally, there is a new Toy Story of TERROR! (and Party Central) book releasing on July 22, 2014.

Thanks to Dan the Pixar Fan for the heads up on the Toy Story of TERROR! set.
