Pixar Inside Out and Lava Logo

Please note: this article may contain spoilers as we summarize reviews and include press release details regarding Lava as well as Inside Out.

Pixar has just released additional details about their upcoming feature film Inside Out as well as officially confirmed their new musical short, Lava (releasing in theaters ahead of Inside Out on June 19, 2015). With the breaking news of Lava, individuals who have already been lucky enough to have viewed a sneak peek (watching the short in its almost finalized state) are already raving about it's beauty and sweet nature.

The official synopsis for Lava:
Inspired by the isolated beauty of tropical islands and the explosive allure of ocean volcanoes, “Lava” is a musical love story that takes place over millions of years.
From Pixar Animation Studios, director James Ford Murphy and producer Andrea Warren, “Lava” opens in theaters on June 19, 2015, in front of “Inside Out.”
From the description of this being a musical love story, we can't help but think of the simplicity and beauty of The Blue Umbrella as well. It will be interesting to see the contrast between the two stories, which on the surface, could sound similar - although we bet they won't be similar at all. The poster for Lava is stunning and depicts many pairs of animals in love - but the star of the show, the volcano, appears to be missing a mate.

Pixar Short Lava Poster

The short will be directed by James Ford Murphy, a studio veteran who started back in 1998 on A Bug's Life as a character designer and animator. With Murphy's eye as an animator (6 Pixar projects), supervising animator (For The Birds, Mater and the Ghostlight) and directing animator (Cars), we're certainly looking forward to his unique take on this love story. It will also be intriguing to see how the musical element will play into the film - as well as who the composer will be?

Lava's producer, Andrea Warren also started on A Bug's Life as Art Department Production Assistant and worked among the Art department as a Manager and Coordinator before taking on the role of Production Manager for WALL•E and Brave.

As a side note - interestingly, there has a lingering rumor of a short titled Lava in production at Pixar for quite some time. We're glad that the rumor is true and even more intrigued now that we have more information.

UPDATE 1: from this article on Coming Soon, it appears that James himself has composed the song for Lava (on ukulele). It is a hawaiian-inspired song that attempts to get you to feel the same emotional touches of Somewhere Over The Rainbow by Israel Kamakawiwo'ole.

UPDATE 2: It should also be noted that Animation Scoop is also reporting that vocal work for the song will be completed by famed hawaiian vocalists Kuana Torres Kahele and Napua Grieg Makua.

Here is a link to Kuana Torres Kahele's beautiful rendition of Haleluia on iTunes, (A.K.A. Lenoard Cohen's Hallelujah, made famous by Jeff Buckley) and a link (YouTube) to Napua Grieg Makua singing her popular song Lawakua. Wow, with all of this emotion in their voices, this seems like Lava will be a poignant short.

INSIDE OUT NEWS

With the press release, also came confirmation that the official Inside Out logo will in fact be the updated version seen last week at the Annecy International Film Festival (be sure to check out our wrap up post of the festival for more details on the film).

Take a Peek Inside the New Ratatouille Themed Ride and Restaurant at Disneyland Paris

Over the weekend, Disneyland Paris unveiled the Ratatouille themed area Place de Remy. While the official opening is set for July 10, Disney invited members of the European press (including our friends from Pixar Planet France) for a special dedication ceremony. Lead by Disney CEO, Bob Iger and Disney Parks Chairman, Tom Staggs, the two were joined onstage by Remy and Linguini for the final ribbon cutting dedication had the press, in the words of Anton Ego, "...hungry for more".

Luckily, the press were then given exclusive access to Ratatouille: L'Aventure Totalement Toquee de Remy (Ratatouille: The Adventure), the newly themed dark ride which features a newer technology of a trackless ride-vehicle system as well as 3D screens and larger than life props that help immerse guests into Remy's world. During the ride guests feel as if they have shrunk down as they explore the kitchen of Gusteau's as rats, only to encounter Chef Skinner who will stop at nothing to get you out of his kitchen.

Photo via DLP Welcome
The restaurant, Bistrot Chez Remy will have guests in pure wonderment as the Disney Imagineers have recreated the ending scene in Ratatouille with decorations to have you feeling as if you were Remy-sized. With chairs that look like bottle caps, Christmas lights in colanders (as chandeliers) and the leaf overhang on the ceiling, you can't help but think there are real rats cooking in the kitchen.

Google's newly minted initiative, Made with Code, is geared towards educating and inspiring young women to look more closely at computer sciences and coding as a career path. With a 50 million dollar investment over three years, the program pairs local events, real-life mentors and existing "makers" in a community atmosphere. Among the mentors that have profiles on the Made with Code site is Pixar's own, Danielle Feinberg (Directors of Photography for Lighting).

Danielle's profile video briefly chats about an her passion for lighting in computer animation and highlights the importance of confidence in the workplace - but this introduction video really sets the stage for Danielle's Made With Code Launch Party presentation where she really shines (video below). Mindy Kaling, the voice of the emotion "disgust" in the upcoming Pixar film, Inside Out, introduced Danielle to the stage and kicked things off in her usual energetic style.

Throughout the presentation, Danielle drives home the idea of following your own voice and setting your own path. Danielle mentioned how following her interests and not following the pack has led her to Pixar - where she's now been for 17 years. As the Director of Photography for Lighting, Danielle describes that she works to determine the look and feel of an animated scene utilizing lighting, but underneath all the lights that she places in a scene are thousands of lines of code.

Small Fry - Director's Commentary Review of the Hilarious Toy Story Toon

$

In 2011, Pixar released its second Toy Story Toon, Small Fry ahead of the revamped, The Muppets movie. Pixarian Angus MacLane reprised his directorial role having previously directed the short, Burn-E (and most recently directed Toy Story of TERROR!). The director's chair wasn't the only role MacLane filled during production, he wrote the short as well - crediting his mother and sister (whom are psychologists) for being the inspiration behind the toy support group.

The short begins in a local fast food restaurant, Poultry Palace and if you look closely you'll get a kick out of the silly items listed for purchase. Items such as Hot Oil for a bargain price of 99 cents are on the menu - and who could pass up a large ranch flavored soda! The charm of this short is that we can all remember getting toys from fast food restaurants and of course getting numerous duplicate toys - UGH! MacLane mentioned that for part of his research he visited 15 fast food restaurants (all in one day) in his hometown, just so he could get a glimpse into how the kids meal toys look today.

Exclusive First Look at "Toy Story That Time Forgot" at 2014 San Diego Comic-Con - July 24

As the Toy Story franchise came to a close in movie theaters in 2010, Pixar was seeking additional avenues to continue to allow audiences to enjoy some of their most celebrated characters - like Buzz, Woody and the rest of the gang. October 16, 2013 saw the release of Pixar's first television special, Toy Story of TERROR!, which was met with overwhelming success. The special, directed by Angus MacLane will see a Blu Ray release packed with special features on August 19, 2014, a book released on July 22, 2014 and even saw a special toy set with Combat Carl released as well.

Toy Story of TERROR! concept artwork similar to what
will be revealed at this year's SDCC panel

Fans of the first special didn't have to wait long as Pixar announced in January of 2014 that they would also be producing a second special titled, Toy Story That Time Forgot. After some engaging discussions on our Forum, we found what we believe is a connection to a certain Edgar Rice Burroughs book titled, The Land That Time Forgot. We even dedicated the beginning of our 24th episode of our Podcast to chatting about the book and how it could potentially be worked into a Pixar story.

San Diego Comic-Con Exclusive First Look

Of course everything that we have discussed up to this point is complete speculation, so today we were ecstatic to learn that we'll be getting our first official glimpse of Toy Story That Time Forgot on July 24, 2014 (11:15 AM - 12:15 PM PST) at San Diego Comic-Con (SDCC) (Room 6A). The details from the SDCC site note -

Additional Details Surrounding Pixar's Upcoming Short, Lava

Spoilers and additional basic story lines may be found in this post.

Three weeks ago, Pixar surprised fans by announcing the initial details (along with the beautiful poster artwork) of their upcoming short film, Lava, which will be featured along side Inside Out in theaters on June 19, 2015. Today, a few additional details have surfaced from an article on Disney Insider as well as the LA Times, including a look at the shorts main character, Uku. According to the LA Times, Uku is "crusty and prone to eruptions, but with a warm core underneath". Uku is looking for love and finds his match in Lele, another volcano among the oceans off of the Hawaiian islands. (Get the connection...Uku & Lele...Ukulele.)

Although Uku is a volcano, director James Ford Murphy wanted to ensure that he had a lovable side to him as well. In fact, James noted that the idea for the short came while he was on his honeymoon, some 20 years ago. He was so taken by the Hawaiian culture that he started playing ukulele and ended up writing the music behind the short. (Additional details on the music, and initial plot details can be found in our previous post regarding Lava.) With a background like that, the passion that James has put into this short will certainly jump off the screen and touch our hearts.

Toy Story That Time Forgot Poster Revealed

Attendees of the upcoming Toy Story That Time Forgot first-look panel on July 24 at Comic-Con are in for a special treat. Guests will receive an official poster from Pixar's second television special which they can also get autographed by Pixarians, Steve Purcell (Director), Galyn Susman (Executive producer) and Derek Thompson (head of story).

TVLine first shared the poster this afternoon and also reported that Michael Giacchino will be on hand to moderate the 1-hour panel session at Comic-Con. Does this imply that he will be scoring Toy Story That Time Forgot, much like he did for Toy Story of TERROR!? We would certainly think so - why else would they ask him to moderate?

The edgy poster was created by the famed monster-loving, Mike Mignola, (who has a penchant for large black areas in his prints) certainly leads us to believe that the short may have a dark side with the perfectly placed humor which Pixar is known for. It also appears that the beloved and goofy Trixie may have been converted to become one of the dangerously delusional dinos (with her red eyes, red back plates and fact that she's sporting the same chest symbol as the other four characters). (The chest plate must be from the line of toys they're from.)

Original book cover for The Land
That Time Forgot

The greenery popping out behind the lead dino-action figure in the new poster, Reptillus Maximus, really plays well into our expanding theory that this short will take inspiration from Edgar Rice Burroughs'The Land That Time Forgot book (the first in a trilogy) which takes place inside of a lush, green island known as Caspak, which is full of dangerous dinosaurs and other terrifying natives.

More details on the basic plot line as well as the vocal cast can be found by clicking the Related Posts links below.

What are your thoughts on the poster and the television special? Leave a comment below or chat about it with other Pixar fans in the Pixar Post Forum post about the short. As a side note, thanks to forum users maxxie03 and TOM-4319 for uploading the image of the poster in the forum - you even beat us to our post!

Working at Pixar Animation Studios is not only a dream job for many fans of the studio, but for its employees as well. Although this dream burns bright, sometimes a new or different adventure calls to us with an intense fervor. Recently, a few employees have chosen to depart from the studio to pursue a series of new adventures and we wanted to pay homage to their amazing contributions within Pixar - and who knows, maybe they'll find themselves back at Pixar one day.

DICE TSUTSUMI

Dice Tsutsumi (Pixar Art Director) announced on his Facebook page that "after 7 years of a dream-come-true time of my life, I decided to leave Pixar Animation Studios to pursue new adventures with yet another former Pixar artist Robert Kondo." Dice continued to express his admiration and gratitude for the studio stating that Pixar was "one of the single most creative environment any artists/filmmakers could ever wish for. It was literally the dream job and I am leaving at the height of my career..."

Below is the goodbye note that Tsutsumi sent to his friends, co-workers and fans:

Though, our guess/hope is that it's Sid from Toy Story.

We are impressed with many of these new Vinylmations and can't wait to get our hands on the Stinky Pete and Syndrome vinylmation. While we agree that all the characters were villains, one sticks out that we just can't agree with and that would be Dean Hardscrabble. Phyllis Smith Discusses Her Vocal Work as Sadness for 'Inside Out'

Phyllis Smith, the voice of Sadness in Pixar's upcoming, Inside Out, recently say down with Fox News in St. Louis and briefly discussed her experience recording vocal work for the Studio. The video below highlights some of her initial struggles of figuring out how to fall into her new role of voice acting as well recording dialogue with Amy Poehler (voice of Joy). Even in moments where Phyllis is joking with the host, her voice still exudes a sullen undertone - what a perfect fit for the role of Sadness.

I had to laugh when Phyllis said, "I don't know is this is a good thing but usually they have about 4 or 5 sessions, I've had 7 or 8 - so it's either because I'm really good or I'm really awful". Additionally, just a few days ago, a user on the Forum spotted that Mindy Kaling posted another look at her character of Disgust as well as a photo with Pete Docter noting that she wrapped her last major recording session.

Do you remember last October when you sat down at home to watch the premiere of Toy Story of TERROR! on ABC? It was such a unique experience to see the premiere of a new Pixar project from our couch that the excitement was palpable as we counted down to 8:00 PM. When we opened our copy of the Toy Story of TERROR! Blu-Ray, those same feelings came back. We were excited to not only view the short again in full 1080p resolution, but also to dig into the behind-the-scenes moments from Pixar's first television special.

Pixar's presentation of the special is what we've come to expect - the image is stunning with an amazing amount of detail and crispness which couldn't be fully portrayed in the high definition television broadcast. The surround sound also shines with its amazing panning and deep bass (which is even more prevalent in subtle moments like Jessie's heartbeat during her moments of stress). That being said, what would a Pixar release be without the many in-depth looks and extra features that we've come to expect?

"A Fantastic New Story" for The Good Dinosaur is Underway

Just about a year ago, we learned that The Good Dinosaur lead director Bob Peterson would be stepping off the project, leaving co-director Peter Sohn at the helm (though a new lead director has yet to be confirmed by Pixar). Shortly thereafter, Pixar announced that The Good Dinosaur would be delayed from a May 30, 2014 release to November 25, 2015 and with that delay would come a hefty storyline change - and possible role changes as well. In a recent interview with Collider (via /Film), John Lithgow says:
“I recorded the entire role in Good Dinosaur. They have now dismantled it and completely reimagined it, and it is a fantastic new story. So I’m gonna record again on it within the next month. Don’t worry. It’s coming and it’s gonna be better than I ever imagined.”
As Lithgow stated the entire film is being "completely reimagined", the original storyline asked the question what if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? The film followed a Apatotosaurus family as Arlo (the teenage Apatosaurus) befriends a young human boy named Spot.

During the interview when asked about looming role changes Lithgow answered "...me and Frannie McDormand, we’re still playing Momma and Poppa dinosaur." This confirmation has us excited about the new story but also wondering if Bill Hader, Judy Greer, Lucas Neff and Neil Patrick Harris characters have made the cut and are still in the film. While this is only speculation as we do not have confirmation from Pixar of any role/character changes we can only add that we are excited to see what The Good Dinosaur will bring us late next year and what the reimagined story will be.
