We even put together a map to lay out all of the Pixar events with their included dates and times! Download a PDF copy of the map.

Download a PDF copy of the "Pixar at the 2013 D23 Expo" map

Event Panels & Viewings:

Pixar: Doing Our Homework - Friday, August 9 at 6:00-7:00 PM
The official tagline for the panel is, "Research is an integral part of the filmmaking process, and with a story in hand, Pixar artists set out to become experts, immersing themselves in places, people and experiences that inspire and inform their filmmaking, whether it be spirited Scots, delectable French cuisine, or deep sea adventures." We can only say from our experience at the Monsters University press event that this discussion will give you some great insight into the insane amount of research and perfection that Pixar puts into their films. If you love details and like to learn about how their films and characters come together - this panel is for you.

The Art of The Good Dinosaur- Saturday, August 10 at 3:00-4:00 PM
The official panel details are, "Pixar Animation Studios’ latest feature explores what might have happened if the cataclysmic asteroid that forever changed life on Earth actually missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct. Take a closer look at this imaginative world of possibility and the artistry and production design behind it." Much like Pixar: Doing our Homework, this panel will give you an early preview into some of the characters and story developments for Pixar's much-anticipated dinosaur film.

SCREENING: In addition to the panel, a sneak peek of the film will also take place in the D23 Arena during The Art and Imagination Panel with John Lasseter taking place on Friday, August 9 at 10:00-12:30 PM. The D23 site states that there will be behind-the-scenes scoops and can't-miss announcements - which we are crossing our fingers for a glimpse at who may be directing an upcoming untitled Pixar feature film or feature short.

This event will be one of the most popular panels of the entire convention, with a total of 4,000 seats it is still recommended that you arrive early to reserve your seat - however, there will be an overflow room with an additional 2,000 seats for those who don't make it in.

Toy Story OF TERROR! and the Motivation Behind Pixar’s Short Form Content - Saturday, August 10 at 5:00-6:00 PM
The official Expo announcement states, "From toys on vacation to tow-riffic four wheelers, Pixar keeps some of their most beloved characters alive and well through short-form content. Angus MacLane, director of Toy Story OF TERROR!, a new adventure featuring Woody, Buzz and the Toy Story gang set for release on TV this fall; producer Galyn Susman; and other Pixar short-form filmmakers share their experiences and discuss the exciting challenges of expanding the worlds of these characters loved by audiences across the globe."

SCREENING: It is rumored that the 30-minute short film will be screened during the panel, however we have yet to receive confirmation on this.

AUTOGRAPH SESSION: One thing that has been confirmed is that director Angus MacLane will be present for an autograph session of the exclusive D23 Small Fry toy (a short that he previously directed) which will be held on Friday, August 9 from 4:30-5:00 PM at the Disney Consumer Products Pavilion.

Women of Pixar - Sunday, August 11 at 1:00-2:00 PM
The official Expo tagline is, "Jessie. Dory. Sally. Merida. Although they never cross paths and exist in different worlds, these iconic Pixar females have one thing in common: girl power. Meet a dynamic group of women from Pixar, whose experience and success at the studio have helped craft some of the most memorable animated films in recent history. They will share stories from their journeys and the lessons they have learned along the way."

Though we haven't heard who from Pixar will be at the panel we know we would love to hear from Danielle Feinberg, Tia Kratter, Sharon Calahan and Bret Parker.

Other Pixar Events:

World of Cars - swing by the Disney Consumer Pavilion anytime between 9:00 AM and 7:00 PM daily to learn how a die cast Cars character is made.

- a la Mode Costume Contest: The judging will take place on Friday, August 9 between 2:30 and 4:00 PM, with the winners officially being announced the same day on the Center stage at 5:00-5:15 PM. Guests have previously signed up to have a chance to win the coveted prize for the best Expo costume. What do they win? An extremely limited edition bronze statue of Edna Mode (only five were made). Could you imagine the price of one of those if they appeared on eBay?

- Artist Meet and Greet - Brad Bird: Briefly chat with the award winning director of The Incredibles and Ratatouille between 1:15 and 2:30 PM on Saturday, August 10 at the Disney Dream Store. This is an amazing and rare opportunity!

- To Infinity and Beyond - Disney Interactive: There will be a ton of great games, demos and presentations from the Disney Interactive group. Included among those presentations will be a great display featuring the soon-to-be-released Disney Infinity game. The event has also teased that the first 5,000 attendees on Sunday, August 11 between 12:00 and 1:30 PM at the D23 Arena will walk away with a free, never-before-seen Disney Infinity character.

Merchandise for Sale:

There will be a slew of Pixar merchandise for sale in the form of pins, toys and collectible artwork - here is the list of what we're aware of at this point.

Extended Clip of The Blue Umbrella is Now Online

One of our favorite buildings from the short

Just a few days ago, we noticed that a fan of The Blue Umbrella sent a tweet to the short's official Twitter page which asked, "please can you release the blue umbrella on dvd want to see it again so much". Well, the official Disney•Pixar YouTube page recently uploaded an extended clip of the short which will hopefully hold fans over until the short is released in its entirety on the Monsters University blu ray, hitting shelves this fall. Beware that this clip contains spoilers if you haven't seen the short yet.

One thing that was really exciting about the extended clip is that it shows one of the hidden items that we noticed not too long ago. In the clip, you'll notice "blue" floating gently back into the city after he is separated from his owner. While floating down, there is a billboard that shows a yellow six-wheeled car, which is the exact poster that is on the basement wall in Monsters University during the Oozma Kappa initiation scene. We also believe that this is a representation of Mike Wazowski's car in the dvd-short, Mike's New Car.

We had a pretty good discussion going on the hidden items in The Blue Umbrella in the comments section of our "Hidden items in Monsters University" post. Below is a screenshot of a few of the hidden references we think we have spotted so far - have you seen any others? We started a topic in the Pixar Post Forum regarding the hidden items in The Blue Umbrella in order to keep the conversation going.

D23 Expo Exclusive "Cars" Convoy Brother Set and Ridemakerz Blue Metallic Lightning McQueen

    0

Last week we created a detailed all-in-one post that highlighted the Pixar-related merchandise, screenings, panels and more that you can experience at the 2013 D23 Expo. Today we wanted to post additional details regarding two Cars sets that are Expo-exclusives. First, thanks to our reader, Kevin, we have additional details surrounding the blue metallic, 1:18 scale Lightning McQueen by Ridemakerz (plastic, not die cast). The slick-looking Lightning McQueen will be priced at $75.00 USD and will be a limited edition of 500. For anyone that's not familiar with the Cars scales - I have also attached a photo from my review of the 2011 D23 Expo Chrome Lightning McQueen.

Finally, we are more than happy that the Cars Convoy Brothers die-cast 4-pack will be sold at this year's Expo since this set has been rumored to have been released for the last several years. The Convoy set (The King fans) is a set of four RVs which come in a highly detailed and weathered Dinoco Motor Oil box. The set will be sold at the Disney Consumer Products Pavilion in the Mattel booth for $99.95 and doesn't appear to be a limited edition set.

Want to Buy a Small Fry Buzz Lightyear From the D23 Expo?

    $

If you're planning to attend this year's D23 Expo in Anaheim, California, you know that there is no shortage of Pixar-themed events and merchandise available. Among the great selection of merchandise is the Small Fry Buzz Lightyear toy that we talked about last week in our unboxing video. After the video was posted, one of the biggest questions we received was, "how can I get one"? We had mentioned to people that the best way to get one was to pick one up on eBay, but luckily one of our readers (who has helped us buy items from SDCC), Kevin, will be at this year's D23 Expo and has offered to pick them up for anyone who would like one.

All you have to do is click here and it will take you to a PayPal page that Kevin has set up - after you complete your transaction, you can expect to receive your Small Fry Buzz in the mail (approximately) within a week of the Expo's completion. Kevin is asking $33.00 for each Buzz toy and that price includes the base price of the toy ($20.00), plus sales tax, plus PayPal fees, plus his handling fee to pick the item up for you. The $33.00 does not include shipping at this point because that will depend on where the item is being sent to - that amount will be billed to you after the shipping label is created (but before your Buzz is mailed). Finally, it should also be noted that although the expectation is that Kevin will be able to fulfill each and every order, if something happens where he cannot purchase the toys (due to them being sold out, or other reasons), you will receive a full refund.

If anyone has any questions they can feel free to email Kevin.

If you haven't watched our unboxing video or seen any of our high-resolution photos of the toy, be sure to check out our post.

A Sneak Peek into Some Additional Pixar Characters in Disney Infinity

Always great to see more of the Toy Story gang

The upcoming release of Disney Infinity has gamers on the edge of their seat with excitement. The pre-orders have been placed, the game system has been dusted off and now we just have to wait for the August 18 release.

Disney Interactive have been keeping our interest piqued with a set of incredible video sneak peeks and behind-the-scenes looks into the making of this highly anticipated game. One of the official Disney Infinity videos (which has temporarily been removed) shows how the characters of Disney Infinity were created...and offers us our first glimpse at the Disney Infinity Buzz Lightyear and Woody characters.

Some additional details have shown us more details in regards to the upcoming Toy Story playset as well, in which we find our friends in space - watch in this Disney Infinity video!

Another incredible video features the POWER of the Disney Infinity Power Discs. Each disc can be used to improve and enhance the game/character in multiple ways (we discussed the first wave of Disney Infinity Pixar Power Discs in a previous post back in March). There are two types of Power Discs, the circular power discs can be used in the Play Sets and in the Toy Box to grant special powers to characters. The Hexagonal Power Discs allow for more customizable play in the Toy Box, unlocking vehicles, themes and special gadgets. Remember, the main idea behind Disney Infinity is "The Possibilities are Endless!"

In the video clip did you happen to catch any Pixar vehicles? If you look close enough you'll see the Pizza Planet Truck, Mike Wazowski's car and a ride vehicle from Buzz Lightyear Space Ranger Spin (a ride at Walt Disney World and Disney Land)! If you also notice in the screenshot at the top of the page, it looks like you'll also be able to play as Merida's trusted horse, Angus, from Brave. Does this also mean that Merida will be available in the game in the future? We hope so - it would be a blast to build a toy box version of Scottish Highlands and battle Mor'du.

The full list of Pixar Power Discs (that we're aware of at this point) have been listed on our forum post. If you spot any new power discs, please let us know. The video above gave us our first glimpse at Angus (Merida's horse), Violet's shields, WALL-E's sky dome and a lot more. Again, read more in our forum post.
    -----

If you haven't pre-ordered Disney Infinity yet, there's still time. Remember that when you pre-order the starter pack, you will also receive an additional Disney Infinity character for free.

    0

With the 2013 D23 Expo kicking off today, we can expect to see a plethora of upcoming film news, concept art and amazing merchandise popping up over course of the three-day event. Although the first Expo presentation led by Pixar Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter, isn't scheduled to get started for a few more hours, John recently spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the Expo and said, "Fasten your seat belts, you’re going to love what we have down there". In the interview, John highlighted some of the great Pixar and Disney Animation news we can expect to hear at the Expo, but the highlight of the interview is a sneak peek at a new piece of concept art from Pixar's 2014 release, The Good Dinosaur.

At the D23 Expo kickoff event (Art and Imagination) starting today at 10:00 AM PST, John is slated to chat about Pixar and Disney's upcoming slate of films. During the presentation, a quick look at The Good Dinosaur is scheduled (not sure on the length of the preview yet), but in the EW interview, we also have learned that John will also discuss two of Pixar's other known releases - Finding Dory and Inside Out.

We're not sure how much Finding Dory or Inside Out news will be revealed - but we can keep our fingers crossed that we'll get to see some new concept artwork. Now, we only have to wait a few hours more.

For more details on Pixar's presence at the D23 Expo, be sure to check out our detailed post.

Monsters University and Cars 3D Blu Ray to be released October 29 - Earlier Digital Release?

    0
Last month we noted that the Monsters University Blu Ray was now available to pre-order on Amazon. Today, we now know the official Blu Ray release date for Monsters University...and a re-release of the first Cars movie in 3D. Amazon has recently listed the official Blu Ray release dates for both movies as October 29 for North America and November 25 in the UK. Additionally, and perhaps more excitingly, is that Monsters University will also be released in Digital High Definition (2D & 3D) on October 8 (just one month away)!

    Monsters University Bonus Features

Campus Life– What’s it like being on a production crew at Pixar? Get a look at a day in the life of the “Monsters University” crew through their own eyes.

Story School– This documentary examines the challenges of creating a prequel as well as themes that run through the story, and the change in focus from Sulley to Mike. We’ll also look at how gags are developed – from writing jokes to brainstorming a million ideas, only 5% of which actually end up in the movie.

Scare Games– At Pixar, we play hard while we work. The same people who keep the film production moving – producers, managers, coordinators and artists – are also the ones who bring spirit and excitement to some of our extracurricular activities. We check out the MU production teams as they go head to head in the mostly playful Pixar Scare Games competitions. This feature has previously been released on YouTube and can be seen on our post here.

Welcome to MU– Sets aren’t just buildings, they are the worlds our characters live in and explore. This look at the Monsters University campus and its development is told from the perspective of the artists who created each piece of the campus from the architecture to the ivy leaves.

Music Appreciation– Randy Newman’s scores are a mainstay of Pixar films, and this documentary will give you a privileged look at his creative process. We follow the “Monsters University” scoring process from spotting to writing and on to the scoring session. including special college-themed recording sessions.

Scare Tactics– Animators are actors who digitally bring the characters to life. In this look at how the MU animation team worked, you’ll see their process of how they channeled their own monster-selves and created moments on screen that were really funny, really scary and also really serious, sometimes all at the same time.

Color and Light– How can a single painting set the tone for an entire scene? We’ll look at the creation of the colorscripts and how they were realized technically in the final film. Along with the process, this piece explores the many layers of technical innovation required to produce such a naturalistic feel.

Paths to Pixar – MU Edition– When one door closes, sometimes another door opens – one with an even more exciting opportunity behind it. Members of the MU crew tell their own compelling backstories and share the challenges they overcame along their paths to Pixar.

Furry Monsters: A Technical Retrospective– Explore the difficulties in creating characters that are 20 years younger with tools that are 10 years more advanced in this contrasting look at the differing technical challenges that arose when making “Monsters, Inc.,” and “Monsters University.”

Deleted ScenesFour separate scenes– “Rivalry,” “Recon,” “Movie Night,” and “Drama Class” – are highlighted with an introduction from director Dan Scanlon.

The Blue Umbrella – This animated short film from Pixar Animation Studios, directed by Saschka Unseld and produced by Marc Greenberg, played in theaters in front of “Monsters University.” “The Blue Umbrella” tells the story of an evening commute in which the rain starts to fall and the city comes alive to the sound of dripping rain pipes, whistling awnings and gurgling gutters. And in the midst, two umbrellas—one blue, one not—fall eternally in love.

Additional Bonus Features - Audio Commentary, Promo Picks, College Campaign, Theatrical Campaign, Set Flythroughs, Art Gallery and more!
    --

I am very excited to see the extras - Story School, Color and Light, as well as Paths to Pixar. Obviously I'll be excited to see them all, but those are the ones that initially jumped out to me. We were surprised to learn that the short film, Party Central will not appear on the Monsters University blu ray, but will instead be released in theaters with The Good Dinosaur!

    Cars 3D Blu Ray Release

A listing for the Cars 3D Ultimate Collector's Edition has also listed for release on October 29. This would mark the first time that the original Cars movie has been made available in a 3D format - Even the massive 11-disc Cars Directors Edition didn't contain the 3D version of Cars. You can pre-order the Cars 3D Ultimate Collector's Edition on Amazon now.

The Good Dinosaur Sneak Peek Details From the D23 Expo

Earlier this morning we were shown an additional piece of concept artwork from the upcoming film, The Good Dinosaur. Now, as the D23 Expo's Art and Imagination keynote kicks off, we are getting even more sneak peeks and details surrounding the May 30, 2014 release. We aggregated this information from a series of tweets and news that was being released as the keynote was taking place (majority between Disney•Pixar & Comingsoon.net) - here's what he know so far.

    Clips

    • A clip was shown from the movie with a photo-realistic asteroid belt where one of the asteroids got knocked out of the group and was hurtled towards Earth. The dinosaurs then watched as the asteroid sails by Earth, barely missing it - of course, no longer causing the extinction of dinosaurs from Earth.
    • A short clip of the main character, Arlo coming across a strange looking bug (named Spot) was shown. Spot turned out not to be a bug at all, but a small human child in a bug disguise. Apparently, there was a lot of comedic moments as Spot tries to attack Arlo by throwing and slapping him.
    • A final clip shows Spot and Arlo hunting bugs together where Spot is less than accurate with his spear throwing and hits Arlo in the eye.

    Event/Story highlights

    Photos © Pixar Animation Studios
    • John Lasseter invited Peter Sohn (Co-director) and Denise Ream (Producer) to chat about the film.
    • They start to show a set of concept art that reveals that the dinosaurs are farmers - each performing acts of farming as if they were traditional pieces of farm equipment. The dinosaurs have been reported to look exhausted and depressed.
    • 3D models of baby dinosaurs were also presented.
    • The main dinosaur character (an Apatosaurus) is named Arlo (green dinosaur shown in the concept art at the top of the page).
    • A plot point is that all the dinosaurs are trying to get numerous bugs off of their farm - everyone is irritated with the bugs with the exception of Arlo.
    • It is rumored that Spot may not talk.
    • Arlo and Spot end up leaving the farm and go on many adventures across many types of terrain, including a snow scene.

Fear, Sadness, Joy, Disgust and Anger - Riley's emotions

Hot on the heels of The Good Dinosaur news from the D23 Expo, we also have additional information regarding Pete Docters upcoming Pixar project, Inside Out. Pete was welcomed on stage, along with Producer, Jonas Rivera. Inside Out is scheduled to hit theaters on June 19, 2015. Again, it should be noted that we aggregated this information from a series of tweets and news that was being released as the keynote was taking place (majority between Disney•Pixar & Comingsoon.net) - here's what he know so far.

    Event/Story highlights

Pete Docter & Jonas Rivera photos © Pixar Animation Studios
    • Docter mentioned that the concept was designed to be completely unique to animation, but needed a way to ground it in reality as well - wow!
    • Riley, the young female main character (11 years old) is a blond-haired, sports-loving spit fire (loves hockey the most, like her Father).
    • After a move to San Francisco, Riley has to gain a whole new set of friends - but along the way, we really see that the other set of main characters are her five emotions (shown as concept art against black backgrounds):
      • Anger / Red color (little toad-like character in a white shirt and tie)
      • Disgust / Green color (dress wearing, arms crossed type of character)
      • Fear / Pink color (Gonzo-like, sweater and bow-tie wearing character)
      • Joy / Yellow color (bright blue hair and a yellow dress with an over-the-top vibe character)
      • Sadness / Blue color (like Velma from Scooby Doo with an oversized sweater)
    • From additional concept art, we learn that the emotions all work together in an office/headquarters. Each of the characters have their own screens that allow them to see the world through Riley's eyes based on their emotion. For instance, Joy's screen sees Riley eating french fries, whereas Anger doesn't see this same screen or view at all. As Joy types on a screen, her emotion increases exponentially.
    • Several other concept pieces show "Dream production" and a "train of thought" (shown as a physical train).

    Vocal Cast

    All Images © IMBD

    Clips

    • A full-fledged animation was not shown, but an animatic was shown where several of the emotion characters (Joy and Sadness) get lost inside Riley's mind - leaving Anger, Disgust and Fear to run the show. Getting inside the mind of Riley isn't the only place the viewers will be able to go - you also will get inside her parent's minds as well and see her Mom's emotions as she tries to communicate with Riley. Riley doesn't have any Joy or Sadness at this point and her Mom senses that she's only Angry, Disgusted and Fearful. As Riley's Mom questions her, the three remaining emotions, attempt to take the place of the missing Joy emotion without success. Riley's Mother then pulls in her Father, who's emotions are watching hockey...all of them! Riley's Father begins to question her and then she blows up in anger since that's the emotion in charge at that time. The Mom then storms off and says, "Why didn't I marry that Brazilian helicopter pilot?"

How pumped is everyone for this movie? I can hardly wait with this description - it sounds so unique, engaging and hilarious!

What a day for Pixar details - First, we got a ton of great details regarding The Good Dinosaur as well as Inside Out and now we get a few tidbits about Andrews Stanton's upcoming Finding Nemo sequel, Finding Dory (November 25, 2015). In addition to the D23 Expo, Finding Dory was also in the news for another reason as well - a potential story change based on an upcoming documentary. First, let's chat about the D23 Expo.

    • Andrew Stanton (Director) and Lindsey Collins (Producer) were on stage to reveal a small amount of details regarding the upcoming film. First up, he revealed that Dory's homing instincts have kicked in and she sets off on a journey (leaving Nemo and Marlin behind) to find her family (1 year after Finding Nemo). Along the way, everyone (not sure who everyone is yet) learns about the real meaning of family.
    • During the event, Stanton jokes that Bill Hader isn't in Finding Dory as Bill pops up on the stage. After some jokes about trying to become Pixar's lucky charm - John Ratzenberger appears as if to reclaim his title and remind people that he'll be in these movies as well!

    Additional Story Details

Earlier today, Animation Fascination spotted an article from the LA Times which noted that Pixar may have changed some of the story details of Finding Dory after viewing the upcoming and controversial documentary, Blackfish. The documentary takes a look at the dark side of keeping Orcas in captivity - while subsequently putting a bad taste in Pixar's mouth, prompting the story change. Official word did not come from within Pixar, or from a Pixar employee so take this news with a grain of salt. Word came from The Covedirector, Louie Psihoyos.

Louis noted that, "Pixar chief creative officer John Lasseter and 'Dory' director Andrew Stanton sat down with 'Blackfish' director Gabriela Cowperthwaite in April after seeing her movie. At the end of the [Pixar] movie, some marine mammals are sent to an aquatic park/rehab facility -- a SeaWorld-type environment,” explained Psihoyos, who heard about the meeting through a friend in the animal rights movement who lives near Pixar’s Emeryville, California, campus. “After seeing ‘Blackfish', they retooled the film so that the sea creatures now have the choice to leave that marine park."

What are your thoughts about Finding Dory? Does this mean that Dory will eventually find her family in an aquarium? Let your voice be heard in the Finding Dory Pixar Post Forum.

Toy Story of Terror - Additional Sneak Peek Details From the D23 Expo

Although we've known some details surrounding Pixar's first television special, Toy Story of Terror, for a while now, today we learned a tremendous amount more...like which toy goes missing from the gang. Most notably, we found out that the official air date for the 30-minute mini-feature will be October 16 at 8:00 PM local time (ABC Network). So how do we know which toy goes missing? Well, the capacity crowd was shown the first ten minutes of the film and Comingsoon.net was live blogging the event.

We don't want to give away too much, so if you're interested, head over to Comingsoon's coverage and scroll to the time marker of 11:48 to read all about it. All we will say is that the short starts with the gang watching a Dracula movie in the trunk of the car while Mr. Pricklepants criticizes all of the typical cliches you would find in a horror movie. After Bonnie's Mom's car gets a flat tire, the gang pulls up to a hotel to stop at for the night. Mr. Pricklepants then says that this exact scenario is the perfect setup for a horror movie. And Scene!

That is a brilliant way to get you immediately into the scene - heck, you've got to get going right away since it's a 30-minute special (with commercials). If you don't know the main synopsis for the Toy Story of Terror, check out our previous post where we discuss the main characters and high level story details.

Keep the conversation going in our Pixar Post Forum. Did you see the 10 minute preview at the Expo - or did you read the summary? If so, what did you think?

John Lasseter's Emotional Moment at the D23 Disney Legends Awards

"It's amazing to be around someone who maybe has had an effect on the world once in their life, but to be with someone, like Steve who changed the world many, many times over - I think this entire planet is better to have had Steve in it." - John Lasseter

The 2013 D23 Expo was three days full of memorable moments, unbelievable experiences and of course mind-blowing sneak peeks into future projects. One speech from Pixar's own John Lasseter during the Disney Legends Awards, about his late-friend and colleague Steve Jobs was the most  heartfelt moment of the entire D23 Expo.

While we were unable to attend the D23 Expo, Ricky from Inside the Magic has posted a video with John Lasseter's entire touching speech accepting the Disney Legends Award on behalf of his dear friend.

During the speech I really connected with the story of how John first pitched Tin Toy to Steve which changed the course of Pixar. First, I love that John noted that Steve sat in the chair very similar to the numerous photos of Steve with his fingers pressed together (similar to the photo pictured at the top of this post), it was a very descriptive yet "real" way we, as the audience always have seen Steve portrayed.

"At the end of the meeting he asked me to do something and it's the only thing he ever asked me to do. He said, John, make it great."

Tin Toy went on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, the first Academy Award ever given to computer animation.

At ten minutes and forty seconds into the video John reveals how he lost his brother to AIDS and how Steve became his brother over time as they got closer and closer. Hearing the raw emotion of John's words was so honest and profound. Having lost my Grandmother to AIDS, I couldn't help but be brought to tears by learning such a personal detail from someone I look up to and admire - it was a truly touching moment.

In a final moving story - one moment regarded by John as a very special day was when Steve came to Pixar to speak with John one-on-one. Steve explained that Apple invited him back as CEO and he wanted John's permission. John mentioned that it was a moment that touched him because it showed how much he truly cared for Pixar.
"He said the reason I feel I really need to do this, is I feel the world is a better place with Apple in it - and he's right."

Pixar Panel Breakdown from the D23 Expo

    $
    0
    0
As you know by now, the 2013 D23 Expo was full of incredible Pixar sneak peeks, concept art and discussions on upcoming feature films. We first reported on the information from The Good Dinosaur sneak peek, Inside Out sneak peek and the Finding Dory sneak peek and are now happy to pass along details regarding the many Pixar-themed panels that took place over the Expo weekend.

The Art of The Good Dinosaur Panel

One thing that stuck out to me during the main Expo keynote (and first sneak peek of The Good Dinosaur) was Arlo's dog-like features (the main dinosaur character). During the Art of The Good Dinosaur PanelIndie Wire noted that "not only is Arlo green (like the forest) but has a goofy smile, large snout and big eyes." I guess that explains why I feat that Arlo was so dog-like - because he has some of those characteristics.

An interesting concept was the fact that the team created the main dinosaur characters as herbivores then gave them a job within the film as farmers. There has been a lot of great character design that went into the detailing by the artists who studied faces of old farmers and incorporated wrinkle patterns and skin coloration to subtly represent the beards of Midwest farmers.

When Bob Peterson was asked by Jana Monji with RogerEbert.com about what happened to the large carnivorous dinosaurs, such as the T-Rex, Peterson laughed and replied "You'll have to see the film."

Some other interesting facts from the Indie Wire article were discussions surrounding the landscape and the interesting push and pull of Arlo and Spot's huge differences in size. "A waterfall overwhelms Arlo, engulfing him in the forest and making him vulnerable. There are lots of metaphors such as this - the design was intended to make Arlo and Spot either come together or pull apart.

There's a gorgeous piece of concept art of Arlo next to a snowy mountain. It's another instance of conveying vastness and vulnerability. Finally, a piece of test footage offered a stunning aerial view of the patchwork farming community and the dinos tending to the hybrid crops in a familiar way."

    Women of Pixar Panel

In this inspiring panel, Producers and Animators discussed how they continue to inspire each other and how they love seeing more women in animation.

The talented ladies that participated in the Women of Pixar Panel were Bret Parker (animator), Galyn Susman (producer), Mary Alice Drumm (producer), Lindsey Collins (producer), and Mary Coleman (development executive) with Robin Chandler, Vice President of Worldwide Publicity at Pixar leading the panel discussion.

According to Mice Chat the discussion began with the panelist giving a little background information on themselves. We were excited to see Animator, Bret Parker included in this panel as we discussed on our Episode 17 of The Pixar Post Podcast - she was one of the women we hoped to see on the panel. Parker noted that she first started as a temporary Production Assistant at Pixar then worked her way up through the company, eventually having her animation reel reviewed by Pete Docter for critique.

One item that really stuck out to me was a comment by Producer Galyn Susman who mentioned that it takes perseverance and tenacity to make it in the animation field - regardless of gender. Whether you can draw or not, a company like Pixar needs a very diverse group of employees on their team to function.

For me, this was a very powerful statement and a very important one especially for those who dream of working for an animation company such as Pixar. Regardless of your skills, there are so many opportunities for collaboration. So many members on the entire team play an integral role in the making of Pixar films as well as the day-to-day operations of this great company.

Ending the discussion there was a question asked to the panel about which Pixar character they relate to the most. The answer from Producer Galyn Susman was the most interesting to us - she stated that she most related to a character that was cut from the film Ratatouille. That character was Remy's mom, voiced by Bette Midler, this blew my mind as I was unaware of this Pixar fun fact.

    Pixar: Doing Our Homework Panel

Pixar always seems to go the extra mile or do their "extra credit" when it comes to the detail of research that they put into each of their feature and short films.

The panel included director Andrew Stanton, producer Lindsey Collins, producer Jonas Rivera, director Pete Docter, producer Denise Ream and was moderated by producer Katherine Sarafian. During the discussion each Pixarian gave a personal story from a research trip, which took them to the "Tabletop Mountains" in Venezuela for UP to a consultation with real astronauts for Wall-e. Of course they couldn't leave out the details of looking "under the foliage" in the Pixar Studios parking lot for the research for A Bug's Life.

One of my favorite stories from the panel comes from Spinoff Online who shared that while doing research for Toy Story the crew discussed their childhood memories of how they played with toys. While it was no surprise that John Lasseter was very careful with his toys just like Andy from the film, it was the revelation that Andrew Stanton and the late Joe Ranft related more to Sid's character that was humorous.

    Toy Story of Terror Panel

The Toy Story of Terror! and the Motivation Behind Pixar's Short Form Content panel kicked off to a packed house on the Expo's, Stage 28 to a packed room. The panel consisted of Jim Morris (General Manager of Pixar Animation Studios), Gayln Susman (Toy Story of Terror producer), Mary Alice Drumm (Producer), Rob Gibbs (Story Artist/Director) and Angus MacLane (Toy Story of Terror Director). The panel was very lighthearted and really gave guests a better look into world of Pixar's short films.

Angus started by discussing that Toy Story of Terror is Pixar's first horror film and that with any short, especially if it's a franchise short (e.g., Toy Story or Cars), you don't have the time to concentrate on every character - you have to emphasize a few. This rings true with the clip that was shown the day prior at the Expo - where we see Jessie is the main focus of the short. Rob Gibbs also noted that the series of Cars Toons focus on laughs rather than on a big or serious plot point.

The panel also announced the release of two new Cars Toons shorts which will debut on the Disney Channel in 2014 - Radiator Springs 500-and-a-half as well as To Protect and Serve. I wonder what the 500-and-a-half short will be about - a race where you have to drive an extra half of a lap?

Overall the panel really summed up with the fact that Pixar really loves to make these short films and that they are one hundred percent an investment in Pixar's future - from the more entry level staff that are staffed on these projects (alongside more senior staff), to the new limits in technology that they can test - the shorts help allow Pixar to grow and evolve in a more scaled back way. Thanks to The Pixar Times for attending the panel and passing along the details.

    Party Central

Although this wasn't an official Pixar-themed panel, we had to make sure we passed along details regarding Pixar's upcoming fun-filled short film, Party Central. During the Expo's keynote session, the audience was treated to a special advanced screening of the short film and the overall reaction was fantastic - the entire audience erupted with applause after the six minute film ended. Party Central is Pixarian Kelsey Mann's directorial debut and allows us to get another peek into our favorite monster world.

The official tagline for the short is - Mike and Sulley are back at Monsters University for a fun-filled weekend with their Oozma Kappa fraternity brothers. The gang is throwing their first party, but no one’s showing up. Luckily for them, Mike and Sulley have come up with a plan to make sure “Party Central” is the most epic party the school has ever seen.

A surprise that was revealed after the screening was that Party Central would not be included along with the the October-release of Monsters University(as previously thought), but would instead be released alongside The Good Dinosaur in theaters May 30, 2014.

Animation Demo and Lecture Masterclass - Featuring Pixarian Michal Makarewicz

    $

    0

When is the last time you've looked at something and said, "That is so cool" without even thinking about it? Well, this happened to me tonight when I was perusing The Animation Collaborative's website - now let me tell you why. Admittedly, I had heard of The Animation Collaborative (AnimC) before and was aware of their lecture series which involve animation industry professionals (from Pixar, Disney, Dreamworks and more). But I can honestly say that I've never taken the time to truly sit down and learn about them and read through their mission before.

As if having Pixar Animation Studios located in Emeryville, California wasn't enough to make you want to move to "Sunny California", The Animation Collaborative is also located there. The brick and mortar animation educator takes a slightly different approach than a full-fledged animation college in that it allows you to enter a series of sessions ranging from Beginning Animation, to Advanced Storyboarding, to Rigging. What I see as the benefit to this method (and made me say, "That is so cool") is because I would personally love to enter the animation industry, but as an adult who is unsure which area of animation I would best land in, this would allow someone to "try on" an area of animation to see which area they fit within the best.

That's not to say that The Animation Collaborative is only for exploratory or entry level students - they offer many advanced courses and it would be a great way to expand your horizon or "brush up" in the area of continuing education (even if you are in the industry currently) .

Details - Animation Demo and Lecture Masterclass

    Michal Makarewicz photo

My main reason for writing this was actually not to gab about how intriguing I thought AnimC was though! I actually wanted to inform our readers (especially our international readers) of a way to connect with The Animation Collaborative at an upcoming Animation Demo and Lecture Masterclass being held in Berlin, Germany on August 24-25 (at the Auditorium Friedrichstraße).

The course is the first international Masterclass for AnimC and will be taught by none other than the Annie Award Winning Pixarian, Michal Makarewicz. The official description of the course is below -

This masterclass discusses animation from a variety of artistic perspectives, breaking down and explaining the simplest to the most complex choices. Beats, Rhythm, Texture, Variety and Entertainment, Relatability, Phrasing, Thought Process, Minimalism and Editing are discussed. Using technical and graphical examples, sound clips from great composers, video clips of famous actors and film scenes, these lectures demonstrate the dynamic, subtle, humorous & startling effects that various choices will have in your work, and how you can apply them.

    Photo © Auditorium Friedrichstraße

Additionally, some additional information about Michal is also provided below (from The Animation Collaborative website) -

Michal Makarewicz joined Pixar Animation Studios in early 2003. He has animated on The Incredibles, Cars, Ratatouille, Wall-E, Up, Toy Story 3, Cars 2 and Brave. Michal has been a Supervising Animator on the Up DVD short: Dug's Special Mission, Directing Animator on Cars 2 and most recently, Supervising Animator on Pixar's first half-hour TV special, Toy Story of Terror. Michal was awarded an Annie for "Outstanding Character Animation in a Feature Production: by the International Animated Film Society for his work on Ratatouille
In Additional to his work at PIXAR, Michal has been teaching animation since 2005. He has contributed lectures as well as taught classes at the online school, Animation Mentor and instructed classes at California College of the Arts and the Academy of Art University. Michal has also been a contributing mentor the the Pixar internship program for the last several years, helping foster growth and development within the company. Michal owns and operates The Animation Collaborative located in Emeryville, California. AnimC offers a series of workshops which bring in some of the most talented artists & instructors in the industry to teach animation, character design, story and a variety of other subjects, in small personal setting.

If you're looking to expand your knowledge base or are looking to brush up, you could do no better than attending this Masterclass in Berlin. Register soon as the event is only a few short weeks away. Once the event is wrapped as well - if you've attended we'd love to hear from you. Send us an email summarizing your experience and let us know what the highlights were and what you most took away from the two-day course.

During our last podcast, we couldn't stop gushing about how much we were loving Disney Infinity for its openness in the Toy Box mode and for the defined adventures in the play set worlds as well. As we've been playing more and more, we've realized the potential of the power discs and the extra characters in the game (for unlocking special missions and vaults). Well, today we wanted to start a new giveaway for a Disney Infinity Lightning McQueen "Crystal" figure.

The Crystal figures adds a bonus element to the game that allows you to gain experience points and re-generate health faster than the standard Disney Infinity characters. At this point, Lightning McQueen is the only Crystal figure to be released, but based on the "Hall of Heros" in the game, it appears that there are expected to be a total of eight additional Crystal figures that will eventually be released (total of nine). Since Lightning McQueen is a bonus character, we thought it would be a fun giveaway for someone that may not have bought this Lightning character yet.

With the Crystal Lightning McQueen you can play in the Toy Box mode as well as the Radiator Springs Play Set (the Radiator Springs Play Set is sold separately and includes Holley Shiftwell).
