Monsters University - An In-Depth Look at the Hidden Items, References and Details of the Film

$

Monsters University had a "Monsterous" opening weekend at the Box Office and with our multiple screenings of the film we wanted to highlight some of the amazing details that we spotted, as well as some of the fun hidden items we've come to expect (and a few unexpected as well). *Please note that if you are trying to stay away from SPOILERS avoid reading below as we discuss details within the film*

Hidden Items & References

One of the great things about Pixar films is finding the "easter eggs" hidden throughout the film - below is a list referencing the confirmed items we have found (as well as some that we are speculating may be additional hidden items).

  • In the beginning of the film, during the field trip scene - little Mike Wazowski exits the bus and says "Thanks Joe, good luck finishing you crossword puzzle" - now, we can't be 100% certain but we felt that this may have been a reference to the late Pixarian, Joe Ranft.
  • Confirmed - On Mike Wazowski's field trip he is partnered up with his teacher, Karen Graves. If this voice sounds familiar it's because it's non-other than Bonnie Hunt - who besides John Ratzenberger is the most frequent voice actor in Pixar films. Bonnie has provided her voice acting talents for A Bug's Life (Rosie), Monsters, Inc. (Flint), Cars/Cars 2 (Sally) and Toy Story 3/Toy Story Toons (Dolly).
  • Confirmed - In addition to the big three hidden items (Luxo Jr. ball, A113 & the Pizza Planet Truck), Pixar fans have also grown accustomed to viewing a hidden character or item from one of Pixar's upcoming films. With The Good Dinosaur scheduled for release on May 30, 2014 we were eagerly watching the screen for references of some friendly dinos and luckily TGD director, Bob Peterson tweeted a hint to "follow the toys". The first sighting is when young Mike Wazowski sneaks into the child's room with Frank McKay - there is a dinosaur skeleton on the floor as well as a stegosaurus on the shelf above Frank's left shoulder. The second sighting is during the final challenge of The Scare Games when the referees are sweeping up toys to reset between scares - there you will see several more dinosaur toys, one of which appear in The Good Dinosaur logo.

  • Confirmed - The famed "A113" can be seen when Sulley storms into class on the first day of Scaring 101. A113 refers to the former classroom of John Lasseter, Brad Bird, Pete Docter and Andrew Stanton at CalArts. The number makes an appearance in every Pixar feature film.
  • Confirmed - Back in February, John Goodman was a guest on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon and based on the clip of Monsters U that he brought, we got our first hint that Mike and Randall were roommates. The hilarious "Winds of Change" inspirational poster that Randy has hanging above his bed harkens back to Monsters, Inc. when he tells Mike & Sulley, "Shh, shh, shh...do you hear that? It's the winds of change". That is a great nod back to the original film - we would love to know who came up with the idea of the inspirational poster!
  • Confirmed - The Pizza Planet Truck has appeared in each Pixar film (with the exception of The Incredibles) and Monsters U continues this tradition. It took us until our third viewing in order to catch the truck parked in the driveway of the JOX fraternity house (as Mike is riding Archie into the house), but when we did, we were nudging each other quite vigorously to point it out.
  • Confirmed - When Don Carlton first explains his story of getting downsized to Mike and Sulley at the Oozma Kappa house he shows his "Sales" business card to Sulley - the address of his office was 1200 Dark Avenue and Pixar's address is 1200 Park Avenue.
  • During Mike and Sulley's initiation in the basement of the Oozma Kappa house, Sherry Squibbles abruptly turns the lights on. In the background you can see a poster of a car that looks a lot like Mike's car in the short, Mike's New Car. Since Monsters University takes place years before Monsters, Inc. we believe the car would resemble an older model of Mike's car in the short film. What do you think?
  • When Brock Pearson is very excitingly explaining that you will not want to touch the stinging glow urchins during the Toxicity Challenge, you can see the Pixar ball (also known as the Luxo Jr. ball) on the wall as they pan to the chest holding the glow urchins.
  • This next reference is one that we can't stop thinking about. In Monsters, Inc. when Sulley starts repeatedly slamming the door after he and Mike are banished, we couldn't help but draw a comparison to Monsters U when Mike is opening and closing the door of the camp closet realizing that they are essentially banished. We loved how in both movies that what they wanted most was essentially being taken away from them during this moment (Boo with Sulley and with Mike becoming a scarer).
  • Confirmed - It was great to see a few characters from Monsters, Inc. make an appearance in the film as well.
    • George Sanderson appears as a JOX fraternity member and Monsters Incorporated employee at the end of the film.
    • Roz (dressed in a fully customized CDA outfit to fit her hair) explained that the CDA will be "watching these two...always watching".
    • Yeti - once Mike and Sulley begin to work their way up through the ranks at Monsters Incorporated we see our soon-to-be-banished friend, the Yeti (voiced by Pixar's lucky charm, John Ratzenberger) who says, "Alright newbies, quit goofing around. I'll have you know tampering with the mail is a crime punishable by banishment". What else is funny is that we hear how he may have been banished...tampering with the mail.
    • An image of Mr. Waternoose with a full head of hair appears during the epilogue as Mike and Sulley are working their way up through the ranks at Monsters Incorporated.
    • Additionally, a love note written to Mike with a quick image of Celia appears in Mike's locker during the epilogue as well.

Details, Details, Details

It's no surprise that we are floored by the details in Monsters University - the collaboration between all of the departments at Pixar allowed Monsters University to become the incredible film that it is. There were quite a few details that really stuck out to us, some which may go un-noticed, but we really wanted to discuss them because it's those details that really add to the depth and realism of the film.
  • The scene where Mike and Sulley are in the human world by the lake offers so many jaw dropping moments, it's crazy. The scene not only caught our eye because of the incredibly real water reflections and shadows, but the mud and dirt on Mike's feet was amazing. I have no clue how Pixar was able to create such an accurate look of mud when the scene is almost black, the ground is dark and now you're going to put dark mud on his feet as well - Mike's feet could easily disappear among everything else. Because of this detail, everything else in the scene is elevated to a higher level as well.
  • Additionally, in the lake scene there were two more moments that really caught our eyes. We loved how the moonlight streamed between the stacked canoes and projected thin shafts of light across Sulley's chest as he tried to convince Mike to go back to the cabin. Finally, in this scene, another astounding moment was when Sulley was running from the park rangers and was trying to climb up a steep hill. As he attempts to scratch and claw his way to higher ground, the way the dirt streams down the hill at varying acceleration rates based on his scrapes is beyond amazing. We really hope people notice this because someone had to animate this tiny detail - although it's small, if the dirt didn't look natural you'd notice it without a doubt.
  • During one of the first scenes in the film (the field trip scene), we get a great look at the concrete parking lot at Monsters Incorporated. Although the concrete seems so trivial, it rarely looks clean - it is dirty, has dried gum stuck to it and has small cracks throughout. As you can see from the screenshot below (from later in the movie), there are many imperfections, discolorations and even a crack in the lower right-hand corner. Additional textures are really highlighted in the wallpaper of the Oozma Kappa house - the small tears and how it is slightly peeling away from the walls really give the house that "lived in" look (look to the left of Art's head).
  • We've talked about the slug before, but on the larger theater screen we noticed the zippers movement on the slug's backpack. The subtle sounds of the zipper bouncing against the teeth of the zipper is so great - it's a subtle but again, an authentic element that adds to the realism. Mike's keychain on his backpack is also amazing as he first enters the ground of Monsters University. The movement of the keychain as he quickly turns his body left and right is great - even when he walks, the subtle bouncing looks so accurate.
  • The scene where OOZMA KAPPA joins the Scare Games is one of the most beautifully lit scenes. Set on a cloudy day with only little bits of sun peeking out, the team did a flawless job creating a mood that was so realistic that is captivated us - we nearly forgot to watch the characters as we were watching the overcast clouds in the scene (look at that rim lighting on Hardscrabble).
  • We absolutely loved the movement of the camera during a few scenes as well. First, when young Mike crossed the safety line at Monsters Incorporated and his teacher first catches a glimpse of him - we loved how the camera zoomed in had to take a moment to catch focus. It was a fresh way of effectively doing a double-take without having to show Ms. Graves' face. Additionally, we loved the camera movements when the OK gang was running from the security guards after their break in at Monsters Incorporated. The natural bounce, quick movements and lens flare from the flashlights as the action progressed was jaw dropping.
  • We could effectively go on and on about every detail but the last one we'll call out specifically is the early morning fog and the breath from the OK crew as they exercise. As you can see in the first screenshot below, there is a light fog that is hovering just above the grass as the scene zooms in. As you get closer, you can also see that as the gang works out you can see their "breath" condense in the morning air as they work out. It's not just steam coming up (like with Terry and Terri's hot chocolate), it's accelerating out at the proper rate for their actions - wow! The screenshot really doesn't show their breath all that well, but you can see it in the final trailer really clearly.

Pixar Love Story: A 'Monsterous' Celebration

This past week the U.S. Supreme Court overturned California's same-sex marriage ban at San Francisco City Hall, thus allowing gay couples to obtain marriage licenses for the first time in four-and-a-half years.

This is where the love story begins between two familiar names in the Pixar world - that of Producer, Darla Anderson and Producer, Kori Rae. Peter Hartlaub from SFGate had the chance to speak with Kori and Darla about this exciting change in California state law, what it means to them, as well as a background on how the couple met. This discussion took place via a phone call as Kori was in Japan promoting Monsters University - below is a snippet of the conversation that took place.

Q: You got the news about the DOMA (Defense of Marriage Act) ruling, right?

Kori: Yes!

Darla: Yes, we did!

Q: Were you married in California?

Darla: We got married (in San Francisco) at least twice. And we also filed for domestic partnership, just to cover all legal bases. We wanted to get married in ’04 to be a part of the movement and everything. … And then we got married again in ’08, when that window opened up. We were part of that second wave.

Q: Was the wedding a small thing at the clerk’s office, or did you invite 500 of your closest friends?

Kori: The first time it was that landmark weekend — we got married by standing in line in the rain for 8 hours. It was really an awesome day, actually. Our witnesses happened to be the couple behind us, because we just didn’t know we were going to do it. We didn’t call anybody.

Darla: For which we got into a lot of trouble. It was a freezing — it was a freezing day. It was a holiday, President’s Day, so most people were out of town. And we didn’t know what to expect. We just didn’t anticipate what a big deal it was going to be to be part of history that way. I remember Steve Jobs was mad. He said, “I can’t believe you didn’t invite Laurene and I to come down to City Hall to be with you guys.”

Q: I’ve been to Pixar many times for other stories. I’d imagine that’s a great place to work if you’re out.

Darla: When I started at Pixar 20 years ago, I wasn’t out of the closet. It’s interesting to think how far the movement has gone in 20 years. Twenty years ago Ellen wasn’t out of the closet, Melissa wasn’t out. It’s been an interesting time both working at the company and having that continuity of this job and all of our friends.

Kori: We got together (during) the last year of “Monsters, Inc.” in 2001. I figured I’d have to leave the show, and I was willing to leave the company at that point. We had talked about it. But they were completely great. They said “Of course not. You’re such a great team, a producing team. We’d love for you to keep working together.” They were nothing but supportive, and have been the whole time. We’ve chosen since “Monsters, Inc.” to not (work together). … I think it’s conscious that our paths have been a little bit separate. I think for the sanity of our relationship, it kind of works out that we don’t work on the same movie.

Q: Darla also produced “Monsters Inc.” How much did you talk to each other during the process of making “Monsters University”?

Kori: The truth is I seek advice from Darla on the producer front for all the shows I work on. This wasn’t different than the others. We talked a little in the beginning about story when it was difficult — when we were going through the early development, and trying to figure out the whole prequel nature.

Darla: Kori was an integral part of “Monsters, Inc.” so she was well up to speed with the DNA of the film. And just to keep a healthy partnership, honestly, we have really good boundaries. It’s hard enough making one of these giant movies, and you put your heart and souls into them. If we carried too much of that at home, we would just turn into animated characters ourselves.

Q: Any other thoughts about this week’s events? Is it hard to process when you’re halfway across the world?

Darla: It’s a full circle moment, having this happen during the “Monsters University” tour, because we got together on “Monsters, Inc.” There’s a cool symmetry to that.

Kori: It’s such a special day. It’s so weird to be here and have all that happening back home. But we feel just so lucky and blessed to even be a part of it. Darla: Truly from the bottom of our hearts, from Bob Iger to Ed Catmull to John Lasseter, everyone at Pixar has been so unbelievably supportive of gay rights. I’m just so proud of our company. It’s a very, very satisfying feeling.
There's one thing that you should take with you from reading this interview - and that is "Love Is Love"
We would like to congratulate Kori and Darla as well as the many other couples and families within California on this incredible news!

Disney’s Club Penguin, the #1 virtual world for kids, is partnering for the first time with Disney•Pixar to throw the Monsters University Takeover event. The event allows players to enroll in any of the three different fraternities (OK, ROR & JOX) or one of the three sororities (PNK) to compete in the annual Scare Games.

As players compete in the games they earn points for their fraternity or sorority while dressing up as their favorite characters from the film - such as Mike & Sulley. The winning fraternity or sorority will be announced on July 6th, where all players can collect the Scare Games Trophy. The takeover officially lasts until July 9th as noted in the official trailer.

Our niece and nephew who are avid Club Penguin fans are thrilled at the opportunity to play in the Monster world and of course to purchase new and exciting items with their virtual coins - such as the Scare Canister. Don't miss your chance to play in this new and exciting world from Club Penguin and Disney Interactive.

In the upcoming thirty-minute television presentation, Toy Story of Terror (airing on ABC in October), we follow the Toy Story gang in a precarious mission to locate a missing friend. On the gang's first adventure outside of Bonnie's house, Bonnie's Mom gets a flat tire on the way to Grandma's house which forces an evening stay at a roadside motel. A frightening series of chaotic events is sure to take place.

Although we discussed additional story details (with comments from director, Angus MacLane) in an earlier article, we were excited to learn today (via Film Music Reporter) that Michael Giacchino is set to score the film. Michael's work for Pixar is widespread as he has worked on everything from The Incredibles, Up, One Man Band and La Luna (among many others) and we're sure his mastery of suspense will translate perfectly in this terrifying tale.

The Blue Umbrella Suite Now Available

Alongside the song "Gospel" (in the end credits of Monsters University), the most frequent email request we've recently received is, "Where can I get the song from The Blue Umbrella"? Well, wait no more as the song is now available for purchase on iTunes (several days ahead of it's scheduled July 9 release date). We were excited to hear the original theatrical version (with vocals by Sarah Jaffe) as well as an instrumental version - both available in The Blue Umbrella suite. My favorite moment is at 2:04 into the song where the music takes a darker turn - the music and the animation are so intertwined in my mind, that I can completely visualize "blue" getting away from his owner and thrust into the unwieldy skies of the city.

Monsters University Short, "Party Central" to be Included on Blu-Ray/DVD Extras?

$

Although Monsters University is still hot-on-the-heels of its June 21 theatrical release, for those of you that are already thinking about owning the movie on Blu Ray, you're in luck - it is now available for pre-order (in two versions) on Amazon.com. Though the official date has yet to be revealed we can only imagine that Monsters University will come out in mid-November, similar to the release schedule of the Brave Blu Ray.

The most intriguing news, along with the availability to pre-order the film, is the possibility of a new Monsters University short. In Amazon's description they mention to, "get ready to party with hours of exclusive bonus extras, including an inside look at the world of monsters and the animated theatrical short film 'The Blue Umbrella'." Partnering that description with a recent interview on the Animation Fascination podcast with Pixarians Austin Madison and Chris Chua, Madison reveals that he worked on a Monsters University short for the Blu Ray titled, "Party Central" (directed by Kelsey Mann).

You may remember hearing the name Kelsey Mann during our Monsters University Press Days, as I was drawn to the story process of the film...and that portion was taught by Mann.

With a title such a Party Central our heads are buzzing with thoughts and ideas - could this short be set in the Oozma Kappa house as it was Squishy who said the family room was named "party central". Wherever the party may be, it's clear that with all the incredible new characters from Monsters University that the short is sure to a blast.

The two versions of the film that are available for preorder are a 3-Disc Collector's Edition (Blu Ray, DVD and Digital Copy) and a 4-Disc Ultimate Collector's Edition (3D Blu Ray, Blu Ray, DVD and Digital Copy). We'll be sure to update everyone as we hear more about the upcoming release, extras and Party Central - stay tuned.

Limited Edition Knick Knack Ornament On-Sale Now

It's Christmas in July! The DisneyStore.com has just released this adorable Mickey Ear Series ornament inspired by the Pixar short Knick Knack.

Knick Knack has always been one of my favorite Pixar films for it's creative storyline and of course the lovable Snowman, Knick. Artist Derrick Lirette has done an incredible job capturing the moment of escape and we really appreciate the extra detail of the snow globe door on the bottom of the ornament. This ornament is a great addition to add to your Pixar collection as Pixar short films usually do not have unique merchandise like this go on sale to the general public (outside of the Pixar Studio Store) - plus, it's a limited edition of 2,400 ornaments.

Steve Jobs to be Honored as a Disney Legend

The Disney Legends Awards will take place this year at the D23 Expo, continuing the 26 year tradition. Held on August 10, at 2:00 PM in Anaheim, California, the Disney Legends Awards recognize people who have made an integral contribution to The Walt Disney Company - such as Film/Television, Animation, Imagineering, Film Voice, etcetera.
“The Disney Legend Award is our highest and most coveted honor,” said Disney Chairman and CEO Bob Iger.

The award recipients receive a handcrafted bronze statuette created by artist Andrea Favilli which shows Mickey Mouse's arm holding a star-tipped wand - the honorees are also presented with a bronze plaque. This year there are many true Disney Legends being honored including three with Pixar connections.

Photo via D23 Expo
One of those visionaries receiving this high honor is Steve Jobs. Jobs changed the world of consumer electronics as the founder of Apple and was the early investor and chief executive of Pixar. After his passing in 2011 Pixar Animation Studios named their main building after Steve Jobs.

We can also start our applause as Billy Crystal and John Goodman are also being honored with The Disney Legend Award. An award that is truly fitting for these two incredible actors after the release of Monsters University. Not only have the duo found success voicing our beloved Pixar monsters but have  been perfecting their craft and entertaining audiences for many years.
“It’s reserved for the extraordinary visionaries and artists behind the Disney magic, the men and women who push the limits of innovation and creativity to ensure Disney remains truly special. The eight Legends we honor this year helped create some of our most beloved characters along with exciting new worlds and thrilling attractions. They also entertained millions of people and expanded our definition of what’s possible. They are all indelible parts of our legacy, and we are proud to recognize them as true Disney Legends.”
Congratulations again to this year's recipients - click here for additional information regarding the Disney Legends Awards.

Second Monsters University Progression Reel

In early June, The Disney Insider blog shared a high-level look into the animation process of Monsters University. Today, in a video posted by Disney•Pixar you can now view that same scene starting from the Storyboards and going through Layout, Crowd Simulation, Animation to Final Lighting.

These animation progression videos always amaze us - it's fantastic to see how far animation comes from storyboards all the way through the final lighting. Our personal favorite moment of the video is seeing the final animation without the final lighting - what a difference lighting makes. I think we enjoyed the final animation so much because we were able to see all those extra little details in the background of the JOX fraternity house while Mike rides Archie.

A similar progression reel was completed for Brave last year - if you haven't seen it, be sure to watch it as well (narrated by Director, Mark Andrews).

Door Tech Lab - Layout by Kristian Norelius - Painting by Paul Abadilla

As a Pixar film nears its theatrical release, you can't help but feel the anticipation build as you chat about the new characters, watch the trailers and speculate over story lines. But the best part of a film's release as after the fact when Pixarians are able to share their work.

Over the last few weeks, we've been treated to some amazing concept art for The Blue Umbrella (from Paul Abadilla) as well as Monsters University (from Chris Sasaki and an animation progression). A few days ago, Pixarian Paul Abadilla, released another amazing group of sets and character artwork that he had the ability to work on - browse a few of them below and then head to Paul's personal site to view the rest.

If you noticed a little something in the image above, you've got a great eye - this is actually from a scene that wasn't used in the movie and was more than likely the school that little Mike Wazowski attended. Additionally, a few of these sets were also created by Kristian Norelius and if you like his architectural, detailed style of art (as well as Paul's work), then you should pick up The Art of Monsters Universityas there is large section of his design work dedicated to when the Oozma Kappa gang visits Monsters, Incorporated.

In May we noticed that Lowe's was going to be holding a series of "Build and Grow" sessions related to Pixar's latest release, Monsters University. Recently they expanded the Pixar offerings and have added two great new characters to build - the famed Pizza Planet Truck and R.C. from Toy Story. We attended our local Lowe's for the Monsters U chest and it was so cool to see how the event was set up - tons of tables, lots of safety glasses and what seemed like a million little hammers tapping away as kids assembled their Monsters U chest. The event is completely free and we can't recommend it enough - click here to sign up

Additionally, there is an event at 10:00 AM local time today (July 13) - sign ups are no longer available online, but if you call your local store you can find out if there are additional slots available.

Pixar's bi-annual (previously annual) Motorama took place yesterday (July 12 from Noon to 2:00 PM) and celebrated the world of cars...no, not the movie...actual automobiles. Pixar employees and invited guests were able to stroll the studio's grounds and view cars of all sorts (classic all the way to soon-to-be-released vehicles) while they enjoyed some barbecue and music. We were also very happy to see that the Pizza Planet Truck was in attendance as well - the details on the truck are so amazing. Congrats again to Marco and crew for their amazing feat - read more about our meet up with the Pizza Planet Truck.

Below is a selection of our favorite photos from the event culled from Twitter and Instagram. If you'd like to view a great collection of images, I'd recommend checking out Stephan Bugaj's Twitter feed. Amongst all of the amazing sports cars and classics, we also loved seeing some of the images of cars related to the movie Cars. For instance, the Citroen pictured below is a car that was featured in Cars 2 as a nod to John Lasseter's tradition with his wife, Nancy, in which they kiss at the center of the Pont des Arts Bridge in Paris. If you look close (as featured in our director's commentary review), you can see the moment honored as the characters arrive in Paris during Cars 2.

Monsters University Fun and Get a Centipede Education

It is often discussed that Pixar has fostered a culture unlike many other companies in existence and in this video uploaded by Disney•Pixar, you can see how the different departments within Pixar had some fun during the production of Monsters University. One of our readers even wrote us on Twitter and said, "This is why it's my dream to work at Pixar" - watch the video and let us know what you think - does this want to make you work even harder to join the Pixar culture?

If you're not a fan of bugs, specifically centepedes, you may want to skip this next video - but then you'd also never learn how Rickey Nierva (Production Designer) and the team referenced a very large centipede for Dean Hardscrabble's inspiration. We had actually learned about the centipede previously, but this is the first time we've heard from the insect expert that brought the centipede to Pixar. Watch the video uploaded by Disney•Pixar, titled "Monthropology" below.

Finally, we thought we'd also share a fan-created video that a reader of ours shared with us which pays tribute to the Pixar's film history in a fun and touching way. Uploaded by Disney Dude on YouTube, the video mixes scenes combined with scores from many Pixar movies, which gives you that "warm and fuzzy" feeling inside - especially starting at 2:10.

In January of this year, we decided that we'd venture into the world of podcasting to continue to find more ways to chat about Pixar by starting the Pixar Post Podcast. But there was one small problem - although we were receiving emails, voice mails and comments, we realized that there was one thing missing - more input from you.

Today we have decided to remedy that issue by announcing the Pixar Post Forum - a great place to read and connect with not only us...but other great Pixar fans. As with any forum, it can't succeed without great users like yourself - so take a moment, visit the forum, sign up and start posting - we can't wait to read and hear more of your thoughts, theories and favorite moments. Oh, and we even have a placeholder underneath each movie for your great fan art - it has been one of the most requested features of our site!

Please feel free to submit any suggestions that you may have to help refine our forum. Although we can't guarantee that we'll be able to implement all of your suggestions, we'll be sure to listen and do our best. One suggestion that we've already received was to split our welcome video in multiple sections - but until we can do that, be sure to watch if you'd like some tips on how to start topics, reply to topics, add photos/videos and even navigate the forums.

Once you've signed up, we'd recommend reviewing the forum rules, watch the welcome video and then take a moment and introduce yourself.

Below is the official Pixar RenderMan Press Release on the 25 Year Celebration:

EMERYVILLE, CA – (Monday July 22nd, 2013) PixarAnimation Studios today announced a celebration of 25 years of Pixar’s RenderMan to be held at SIGGRAPH 2013 featuring events that will include a commemorative Users Group Meeting and a number of special presentations demonstrating how RenderMan has been used in this year’s most successful visual effects blockbusters and animated features, including Pixar’s “Monsters University” (and the accompanying short “The Blue Umbrella”). Pixar’s RenderMan Studio 18 will be prominently featured, showcasing the most recent developments in Pixar’s rendering technology, including major advances in photorealistic global illumination."Geometry lights are awesome!" said Mitch Prater (LLC), Shading System Architect for Laika VFX. "It's a fantastic achievement with geometric area lights that have tons of great features, better sampling for faster and better results, interactive path tracing, and expanded controls and shading information access. It's a huge step up from 17."

Over the past 25 years, RenderMan’s pioneering contributions in computer graphics have dramatically transformed the animation and visual effects industry, establishing an unparalleled body of knowledge, expertise, and production insight into all aspects of rendering at the highest levels of cinematic realism. Pixar’s RenderMan today is responsible for generating more film pixels than every other solution combined and has become the standard for cinematic photorealism, used in 19 out of the last 21 Academy Award® winners for Visual Effects.

Continuing to build on the advances embodied in the recent release of RenderMan 18.0, Pixar’s RenderMan team is currently developing new paradigms for rendering high-level visual effects, retaining all of the traditional strengths of RenderMan while establishing new levels of ease of use and accessibility. From SIGGRAPH 2013 onwards, a series of additional special events and software release announcements will highlight how RenderMan continues to change the way in which movies are made and why it is relied on by studios worldwide.

Pixar’s SIGGRAPH 2013 booth (#433) in Anaheim will feature regular demonstrations of the very latest RenderMan technology and products. The annual RenderMan Users Group meeting will be held on Wednesday, July 24th at 6:30 P.M. in the Hilton Anaheim Hotel. For more information about the programs commemorating RenderMan’s 25th anniversary please visit Pixar’s booth or contact rendermansales@pixar.com.

UPDATED - The Hollywood Reporter also had a chance to speak with Pixar director, Pete Docter at SIGGRAPH about his upcoming feature film, Inside Out. Docter shared some of the challenges that he and his team were met with while finalizing the TWO storylines for the film, “One story is hard enough,” he said. “This is two stories that need to talk to each other.”

Another challenge that Docter shared was character development and animation, “The characters are created with this energy because we are trying to represent what emotions would look like. They are made up of particles that actually move. Instead of being skin and solid, it is a massive collection of energy."

This is the first confirmation we have heard regarding the appearance of future characters for this film and we must say - we are excited! To know that the characters are based on emotions is sure to make this film a relatable classic Pixar film!

We also started a forum discussion on Pete Docter's comments and our theory on the story and character elements - let us know your thoughts and theories.

Earlier this evening, one of our sharp eye'd readers (Jace) sent us a tweet that said, "Have you guys seen this Small Fry Toy Story figure?" We were shocked when we looked and realized that we hadn't seen it before. It made us wonder - is this a toy that will be released at this year's D23 Expo? Update - we have since learned that this will in fact be released at the D23 Expo - details are listed below.

The Buzz Lightyear Small Fry toy, with included Poultry Palace happy-meal style box is approximately four inches tall and looks to have an incredible amount of detail - from his helmet, to the paper background french fries and drink cup, it really captures the essence of the short. It even looks like Buzz has movable legs and arms (not sure though). For more details and to buy a Small Fry Buzz Lightyear, check him out on eBay.

Updated - Thanks to another one of our readers (Brian), he noticed the D23 Expo event schedule mentions that on Friday, August 9th from 4:30-5:00 PM, "Pixar's Small Fry director Angus MacLane signs Buzz Lightyear Small Fry action figures" at the Disney Consumer Products Pavilion. If you're going to be at D23, be sure to get in line early since 30 minutes of signing is going to go by in a flash.

Since we posted this just about 30 minutes ago, several of the eBay auctions have sold - if you want one, you should pick it up fast as we believe only (one) three of them remain (at this point).

Keep the conversation going and let us know if you plan to buy one of these toys...either now or at the D23 Expo on the Pixar Post Forum (we started a post about Small Fry Buzz).

Buzz Lightyear "Small Fry" Toy - Unboxing and Video Review

Late last week we posted about the exciting Small Fry Buzz Lightyear toy that is (most-likely) scheduled to be released at the 2013 D23 Expo. Today we're excited to bring you our unboxing and toy review video as well as close-up photos of the fast-food inspired character. The Small Fry collector toy has outdone itself in terms of detailing - from the outer box (with included chicken grease stains), to the inner happy-meal style box, the presentation is amazing.

The outer box measures 8.125" in width, 6.625" in height and 4.5" in depth and the Buzz character is just over 4.5" tall. Speaking of Buzz, the character is amazingly painted (as you can see in the video and photos) and is extremely accurate in its color representation and edge precision. The toy appears to be an un-numbered piece and doesn't contain a certificate of authenticity - but don't let that take away from the unique nature of the toy. For fans of the short film, this is a must-have for it's great packaging and amazing likeness to the fast food Buzz Lightyear in the short.

So what do you do if you want one of these great Buzz toys? The short's director, Angus MacLane is scheduled to autograph the toy at the D23 Expo on Friday, August 9th from 4:30-5:00 PM at the Disney Consumer Products Pavilion. If you're going to be at D23, be sure to get in line early since 30 minutes is not a long time for an autograph signing. If you can't make it to the D23 Expo and you want to pick up a Small Fry Buzz Lightyear, be sure to check out our eBay link to take you right to the available Buzz toys.
