Official Character Descriptions of Riley's Emotions

$

As we quickly approach the theatrical release for Inside Out, it seems that we are treated daily to new and exciting details on this highly anticipated film. Today, Pixar has released the official character descriptions for the five character emotions inside Riley's mind. While we have already seen these hilarious characters in action (from the numerous trailers and toolkits), it is fun to read a little backstory and get inside 'their' minds.

JOY (voice of Amy Poehler) Joy’s goal has always been to make sure Riley stays happy. She is lighthearted, optimistic and determined to find the fun in every situation. Joy sees challenges in Riley’s life as opportunities, and the less happy moments as hiccups on the way back to something great. As long as Riley is happy, so is Joy.

FEAR (voice of Bill Hader) Fear’s main job is to protect Riley and keep her safe. He is constantly on the lookout for potential disasters, and spends time evaluating the possible dangers, pitfalls and risk involved in Riley’s everyday activities. There are very few activities and events that Fear does not find to be dangerous and possibly fatal.

ANGER (voice of Lewis Black) Anger feels very passionately about making sure things are fair for Riley. He has a fiery spirit and tends to explode (literally) when things don’t go as planned. He is quick to overreact and has little patience for life’s imperfections.

DISGUST (voice of Mindy Kaling) Disgust is highly opinionated, extremely honest and prevents Riley from getting poisoned – both physically and socially. She keeps a careful eye on the people, places and things that Riley comes into contact with – whether that’s broccoli or last year’s fashion trend. Disgust always has the best of intentions and refuses to lower her standards.

SADNESS (voice of Phyllis Smith) None of the other Emotions really understand what Sadness’s role is. Sadness would love to be more optimistic and helpful in keeping Riley happy, but she finds it so hard to be positive. Sometimes it seems like the best thing to do is just lie on the floor and have a good cry.

Pete Docter Reveals That He Voices a Character in 'Inside Out' During a Canadian Talk Show

The Inside Out press tour is in full-swing as director, Pete Docter and producer, Jonas Rivera were featured on the Canadian early morning talk show, Breakfast Television. During the five-minute interview the duo revealed their excitement for the film as well as their appreciation for the vocal cast. We always enjoy hearing stories of collaboration on Pixar films and it was great to hear that both Bill Hader (the voice of Fear) and Amy Poehler (the voice of Joy) worked with the team during the entire project.
"She (Amy Poehler) is just fantastic! We've gotten to actually write with her, so she's been an intrigual part of creating the character and the whole story - so that's fantastic". - Pete Docter.

As the interview came to an end Pete Docter was asked if he could reveal any easter eggs, "Well, I get to be a voice...I am the voice of dad's Anger". This exciting confirmation now has us wondering if perhaps, Docter was able to animate any particular scenes in addition to lending his voice to the film. What do you think? Pete Docter Explains Importance of Infusing Personal Experiences Into Pixar Films

Director, Pete Docter recently sat down with CBC Radio (a Canadian-based radio program) where he discussed his journey into the making of Inside Out. The 20-minute conversation is sprinkled with details regarding the research of the film, as well as interesting facts - such as one of Riley's fears being, her Grandmother's vacuum. As the interview continued, Docter was asked to explain Pixar's secret of bringing emotional truth to each of their films. While there is no 'secret', Docter explained the importance of infusing truth from some sort of personal situation and proceeded to share his own story which helped create the storyline for Sulley in Monsters, Inc.
"Monsters, Inc. was born out of the fact that I love my work, I love my job and my wife and I had a kid. So now suddenly, I am wanting to be at work but then missing his first smile at home and how I want to be at both places - and I can’t. So, that’s really what Sulley from Monsters, Inc. is dealing with. This idea of loving work and being all about scaring and his job and now he’s stuck with a kid, and that becomes his obsession and he doesn’t know how to play his life. It’s those real-life experinces that are complex and hopefully that a lot of people can relate to that really become the heart of the film". - Pete Docter

Pixar Post's 3-Year Anniversary Giveaway!

Three short years ago, over dessert on a quiet evening, we (Julie and I) decided that we wanted to start a website. A website where we could chat about and share one of our greatest passions - Pixar Animation Studios. As we look back across our three years of posts, product reviews and podcasts we wanted to celebrate by launching a giveaway for not one, but two individual giveaways!

The first giveaway is for a brand-new exclusive Pixar Studio Store T-Shirt (size Large) and the second is for a copy of the current issue of D23 Magazine which is an exclusive of D23 Gold members. But why are we giving away a copy of the magazine? It actually includes a brief article on Simon Christen and K.C. Royer - a pair of Pixar animators with a very unique office which looks like the wreckage of a vintage plane in the South American jungle. We were lucky enough to have been in Simon and K.C.'s office and it is astounding to see all the work and detail they have included. Although the article is short, it's still worth looking at a few photos and learning a bit more about the pair who wrapped on Inside Out not too long ago.

HOW TO ENTER

All you have to do to enter either giveaway is read the rules and qualifications below for verification purposes, decide if you want to enter one or both giveaways and finally, fill out the form below.

New 'Inside Out' Exhibit at Disney's Hollywood Studios Features Amazing Concept Art

Pixar fans who are visiting Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida over the next few months are in for a very special treat. As of yesterday, the rotating concept art exhibit located in the Magic of Disney Animation building (at Disney's Hollywood Studios) is now giving guests an 'inside' look into the film, Inside OutThe gallery consists of three glass display cases with various concept/character development sketches as well as maquette statuettes of the five main emotions. Look closely and you'll notice subtle changes to the characters as the film progressed during the 5-year production period.

Our favorite piece included in the exhibit is a sketch done by a Production Designer (pictured below), that portrays the day-to-day life from his daughter's point of view and what tends to be important points of interests in the eyes of a child. This particular piece adds the personal touch to the research of the film - mirroring what Pete Docter explained during a recent radio interview.

Get a Sneak Peek at Some Early 'Inside Out' Easter Eggs & Fun Facts

Do you love to spot out hidden references or Easter Eggs within Pixar films? Would you like to have a sneak peek to help spot these items in Inside Out? If you answered yes to either of these questions, than you're in luck. Pixar has released an official 'Fun Fact' list for fans to preview well in advance of the theatrical release of Inside Out. The official list does not include iconic Easter Egg finds such as the Pizza Planet Truck or the famed A-113 - allowing fans to spot those items on their own without guidance.

PICTURE THIS– The background memories on shelves inside or outside of Headquarters are shots from the “Married Life” scene in “Up.”

ROAD TRIP– As Riley and her parents trek to San Francisco, they come across birds on a telephone wire from production designer Ralph Eggleston's 2000 short film "For the Birds.”

GLOBAL DÉCOR– The globe in Riley’s classroom has been used in all the “Toy Story” films.

FAMILIAR FASHION– One of Riley’s classmates is wearing a camo pattern made up of “Toy Story” characters.

STUCK ON YOU– The background city cars of San Francisco all have bumper stickers from “Cars.”

TECH SAVVY – Dad's company, Brang, is a nonsense word intended to sound like a startup that would fit in in the San Francisco tech scene.

SIGN HERE– A sign on a parking meter in San Francisco reads, “Quarters and Dollar Coins or Barter During Burning Man.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT LOCATION– As a tribute to the Walt Disney Family Museum, the filmmakers set Riley’s hockey rink in the exact spot the museum is located in San Francisco.

While this list is just a small look at the Easter Eggs and hidden references within the film, it's great to start getting your mind in gear for the June 19, 2015 theatrical release. Of the items mentioned above, we're personally excited to catch a glimpse of the Cars bumper stickers the most - closely followed by the For The Birds gang. What are you looking forward to spotting? Upcoming Pixar Presentations Include Sneak Peek of 'Inside Out'

There are many ways that Pixarians can inspire us, whether it be through their handwork shown on film or simply voiced in-person on stage during a special presentation. This upcoming May, long-time Pixarians will hit the road, as Ed Catmull is set to address Johns Hopkins University's graduating class and the comedic duo of Pete Docter and Jonas Rivera will present a sneak peek screening of Inside Out

'Inside Out' Sneak Peek Screening

This Spring, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will present a month-long (April 24 - May 29, 2015) series of animation events/special presentations titled An Animation Showcase: From Celluloid to CGI. Taking place in New York, the showcase will feature five events highlighting topics ranging from animation techniques to behind-the-scenes discussions with filmmakers. While each event is not to be missed, Pixar fans who live in the area will be pleased to learn that the closing event (May 29) features a sneak peek screening of Inside Out. Following the screening, the audience will be treated to an 'inside' look at the film - as director, Pete Docter and producer, Jonas Rivera will be on-hand to discuss details from the production of the film.

This is an incredible opportunity to listen to this engaging duo - each of whom have been with Pixar Animation Studios for over 20 years. To purchase tickets to this incredible event click here.

Ed Catmull To Speak At Johns Hopkins University's Commencement

On May 21, Ed Catmull, President and co-founder of Pixar Animation Studios will speak at Johns Hopkins University's commencement. While many of Catmull's speeches have been posted on various online channels, it is worth noting that each one contains inspirational knowledge and insight into the mind of the technological visionary. Back in 2012, Ed Catmull addressed the graduating class of the University of Utah. During the speech the audience was treated to a very powerful story where Catmull explained that there are critical moments in life and business - all which can be measured by two inches.
During a family vacation to Yellowstone the Catmull family (Ed Catmull was 12 years old at the time) narrowly escaped a tragic accident. A minor fender bender on a narrow canyon road almost sent the family and their new 1957 Ford station wagon off the road and down a cliff. The space between life and tragedy for the Catmull family was two inches.
"Two more inches, no Pixar. I have no way of conceiving the number of two-inch events in the lives of people at Pixar. When I describe those events to people, they say, 'You dodged a bullet,'" said Ed Catmull. "Whatever instinct you have for controlling the future, you have no way of accounting for all the two-inch events." - an except from our original "Two More Inches, No Pixar" post.
We have our fingers crossed that the upcoming commencement ceremony at Johns Hopkins University will be streamed online - so that we too, can be inspired once again by the words and wisdom of Ed Catmull.

'Inside Out' Press Event Overview

Simply put, Inside Out is a special film. It's the first since the Toy Story franchise which explores the emotional challenge of leaving childhood behind while masterfully tugging at the heartstrings of audiences regardless of demographics. Over the coming days and weeks we will dig deeper into the story, production, animation, lighting and many more details which were discussed during the Inside Out two-day press event.

The event began with a screening of Lava, the short will premiere ahead of Inside Out in theaters on June 19, 2015 (North American release date). Jim Murphy (Director) and Andrea Warren (Producer) warmly greeted the group to discuss the Hawaiian-inspired roots behind the film and even included Jim singing the initial version of the song he presented to John Lasseter when initially pitching the idea for the short. Although Lava isn't Pixar's first musically-driven short film, it may contain the most catchy song to date.

Just over a year ago during the 2014 Annual Disney Shareholder meeting, CEO Bob Iger revealed that a sequel to The Incredibles was in the works. As news traveled across the internet, Pixar fans rejoiced as they would finally be able to visit their favorite superhero family once more. While there were no additional details released about the film during the announcement, fans were left to speculate on possible directors, writers and what the storyline may be. Speculations are starting to clear as Brad Bird has shared in an interview with Ophira Eisenberg on NPR's Ask Me Another show, that he is currently writing The Incredibles 2.

Ophira: The Incredibles 2 is also going to happen?
Brad Bird: It's percolating. Yeah, I mean...I'm just starting to write it so, we'll see what happens (audience cheers).

It was only two years ago that The Hollywood Reporter discussed the the potential for the frequently fan-requested sequel with Brad Bird, "I have been thinking about it. People think that I have not been, but I have".

Will 'Riley's First Date' Be a Bonus Feature on The 'Inside Out' Blu-ray Release?

$

About a month ago, it was announced that Pixarian Josh Cooley would take the directing reins alongside of John Lasseter and co-direct the upcoming Toy Story 4 film (set for a 2017 release). In addition, it was also revealed that Cooley had just finished directing a short film for the studio - which takes place inside the world of Inside Out and will appear as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release. As of today, we now have what appears to be the title of the Inside Out short, Riley's First Date - potentially directed by Cooley (via Stitch Kingdom).

At this time, we cannot confirm if Riley's First Date will be on the Inside Out Blu-ray release or potentially in front of an upcoming Disney theatrical release - similar to the release of the Monsters University short, Party Central which was shown ahead of Muppets Most Wanted. Be sure to share your thoughts with other Pixar fans about Riley's First Date and Inside Out in The Pixar Post Forum.

'Inside Out' To Be Included In The Launch of Dolby Vision

Photo via Business wire
Dolby Laboratories and Walt Disney Studios have just announced their collaboration to bring the new technology of Dolby Vision to Dolby Cinema locations to enhance your moviegoing experience. The official Dolby Labs press release reveals the technological breakthroughs of the new Dolby Vision - which include a projection system featuring the use of state-of-the-art optics and image processing to deliver enhanced color and contrast ratio that far exceeds any existing image technology on the market today. Thus, allowing the filmmakers to use the full gamut of colors, peak highlights, greater brightness, and amazing contrast, with the confidence that those will be reproduced faithfully on cinema screens that feature Dolby Vision.
"Our studio and our filmmakers put so much into creating high-quality, immersive experiences for audiences, and that includes using the latest, cutting-edge technology to enhance the stories we tell," said Dave Hollis, Executive Vice President, Theatrical Distribution, The Walt Disney Studios. "Disney has been a longtime collaborator of Dolby, and we're excited for the continued storytelling possibilities that technologies like Dolby Cinema deliver."
Collaborating back in 2010 for the release of Pixar's Toy Story 3, Dolby Surround 7.1 was introduced to deliver superior sound. Then again in 2012, the launch of Dolby Atmos which featured "movement in the audio" (including many overhead speakers) to immerse theatergoers into the film, Brave was the first film featured in this format. While there has yet to be a list of cities which will first feature Dolby Vision, we have our fingers crossed that it will be close by so we can experience this breaththrough new technology firsthand.

World Premiere of 'Inside Out' To Take Place at The 68th Annual Cannes Film Festival

$

0

Early this morning as the official selections of the prestigious 68th annual Cannes Film Festival were revealed, we waited with anticipation to see if Inside Out would be included on the roster. After much speculation this past month, we now have confirmation that Inside Out will have its World Premiere at the festival this upcoming May. This will be director Pete Docter's and producer Jonas Rivera's second time at Cannes - having previously been there for UP (the first animated film ever to be shown as the Festival's Opening Ceremony film). Joining the duo this time around will be co-director Ronnie Del Carmen, along with several members of the English-language vocal cast.
“We are overjoyed at being included in this year's official selection at Cannes,” said Docter. “With ‘Inside Out,’ we spent years imagining – and then building – never-before-seen settings and characters within the mind. It was an incredible, fun and exciting challenge and now we can’t wait to share it with the world.”

In addition to this exciting announcement Disney•Pixar has released a new clip from the film, titled 'First Day Plan'. The clip highlights the emotions getting ready for Riley's first day of school - which focuses on the project manager-like duties of Joy and the lack of responsibility given to Sadness. As the emotions prepare for the big day, it was a fun surprise to see how the Train of Thought comes into frame to deliver (what appears to be) daydreams to the group in the 'headquarters'. It should also be noted how versatile the entire Inside Out team is - the camerawork within this scene along with the additional squash and stretch techniques (especially when Joy talks) continues to impress us.

Ratatouille in Concert Coming Soon To Concert Halls Near You

Fans of the highly-celebrated Pixar in Concert series are in for a special treat as CAMI (the organization behind the Pixar in Concert series) recently announced that Ratatouille in Concert will be the next iteration in the Symphonic Cinema Project list. Ratatouille has always stood out for its strong visual appeal, but the soundtrack (composed by Michael Giacchino) is brilliant in its own regard as well. The soundtrack soars with its French-inspired themes and balance of quiet, introspective moments compared against the peppy suspense of the Remy and Chef Skinner chase scenes.

For the first time ever, Disney and Pixar release their Academy Award winning film RATATOUILLE in high-definition on the big screen while the beloved score by composer Michael Giacchino is performed live by symphony orchestra. This live orchestra event is an experience to savor as the movie cooks up delectable moments again and again.

So, when will the performances start hitting concert halls near you? Although no official release dates have been announced as of yet, Maria Giacchino (Michael's publicist and event manager - concerts and appearance) noted that the launch would be October 2015 (starting in Paris, followed by international dates thereafter).

Are you excited for the news? Will you be heading to a concert hall near you to catch the performance? We know we will!

New French 'Inside Out' Trailer Features Riley's Classmates and Easter Eggs

$

Each of the previously released Inside Out trailers have centered around a particular mood or theme from the film, but the new French trailer is a great contrast focusing on Riley's world outside of her mind (via The Official Disney France YouTube channel). The new footage highlights Riley's classroom and classmates which makes you feel those first day of school jitters all over again. From the character design of the classmates to Riley's outward timidness, you get the sense that this large city school is drastically different from her midwestern roots.

As we noted back in March, Pixar released a few Fun Facts about Inside Out and while we thought we'd have to wait for the theatrical release to spot one, we were pleasantly surprised to have notice a few from the list- including an additional Easter Egg. If you look closely at one of Riley's classmates you'll notice that his camouflage shirt is comprised of Toy Story characters (pictured above you can see Rex). Speaking of Toy Story, did you happen to notice that one of the classmates in the same photo is wearing a similar skull design shirt? Finding these Easter Eggs definitely has us excited to spot more when Inside Out hits theaters on June 19, 2015.

Madame Tussauds in San Francisco is looking to immortalize a new Bay Area tech innovator into their wax figure line-up - and Pixar's very own Ed Catmull is in contention. According to Examiner, fans have the opportunity to nominate their technological icon (with a large Bay Area presence) until April 23. Catmull would be a great addition to the San Francisco attraction given his computer science and texture mapping background (Catmull-Clark algorithm) that has changed the future of the animation industry. Other popular Bay Area tech innovators who have also received nominations include Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk, Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg and Wired Magazine co-founder Jane Metcalfe.

Beginning on April 24, Madame Tussauds will open a second round of voting for fans to then cast their vote on the six finalists (we'll update this post with the voting link once it's open). The winner will be announced on May 26, 2015 with their likeness cast in wax at the Madame Tussauds in Fisherman's Wharf.
