A Peek Inside Pixar's Localization Process For 'Monsters University'

Earlier this month we were lucky enough to chat with Pixar's localization artist, Laura Meyer, and we couldn't help but be intrigued as she described the process that takes place when preparing a film for release outside of the U.S. market. As an artist, Laura is one member of the small, yet bustling localization team (which also has ties to the Post Production department). During our interview, we spent a bit of time discussing examples of Laura's work and rather than just talk about it we wanted to  visually show screenshots from Monsters University (one of the films we discussed) to better illustrate the changes that take place across regions.

Laura Meyer © Debby Coleman / Pixar
To get started, we reached out to our friends, Luis at Pixar Brasil Blog and Fabien at Pixar Planet France to ask for their assistance. Luckily, they were just as excited as we were to help out and we can't thank them enough for taking the time to capture screenshots from their local copies of Monsters University to help with our post.

Additionally, be sure to listen to our entire interview with Laura Meyer included on Episode 34 of the Pixar Post Podcast. We guarantee her personal story will engage and inspire you.

A new International Toolkit for Inside Out has just been released (via PixarInsideOut Tumblr), this one featuring Joy as her bubbly self trying to cheer up Sadness. While the clip is short in length the amount of detail that is shown is mind-blowing. The incredible animation showcasing the "squash and stretch" style really highlights the talent and versatility of the Pixar animators. If you look closely, you'll notice tiny glittery (pixie dust-like) particles fall from the duo as Joy happily bounces out of frame with Sadness in tow. It's the tiny details like this that make us drool with excitement and we can't wait to see more!

The second International toolkit features the group dancing in a conga line formation, with Joy at the forefront and the group lagging behind.

Although the Super Bowl may be the may be biggest football game of the year for fans across the United States, we're more excited for a teaser that Pixar recently revealed for Inside Out which coincides with the "big game". Yesterday, the official Inside Out Twitter feed tweeted to, "Follow #InsideOut@Headquarters tomorrow during the Big Game." Now, we assume that this will mean that the emotions will be live tweeting during the Super Bowl, but it could also mean that the emotions will be tweeting during the Animal Planet "Puppy Bowl" (airing at 3:00 PM local time February 1, 2015) since they have also been cross-promoting that event as well with the advertisements below.

Be sure to follow @Headquarters on Twitter and get ready for some hilarity as the emotions chat back and forth about the stress and fun of the game - sounds like a great time! Thanks to our great forum users mynameiskhannie & maxxie03 for noting the Headquarters Twitter account and Puppy Bowl teasers!

UPDATED - Once the Puppy Bowl got underway, we were eagerly awaiting any new clips. The first sneak peek on Inside Out highlighted the second trailer which had been seen previously. We were excited when the second sneak peek popped up though because we were able to get a few new looks at the emotions showing off their...well...emotions in headquarters, along with a very brief clip of Riley seated on a couch watching television.

Bing Bong - Inside Out's Newest Character

Rumors have been swirling for quite some time regarding a new Inside Out character named "Bing Bong" and thanks to an unlikely source, we have a sugary-glimpse at the new character. Kellogg's recently released a set of fruit snacks themed after the upcoming film and featured six flavorful characters: Joy, Sadness, Anger, Fear, Disgust and (the yet-to-be-discussed) Bing Bong.

Until now, we've held off on posting about Bing Bong strictly because images of the character were leaked, but now that we have the product in-hand we chose to post this initially to start the conversation. In fact, you can jump right in and start chatting about Bing Bong in the Pixar Post Forum. We even have a few personal theories about the character (who is being labeled as Riley's imaginary friend), but we're going to save those for our next podcast (episode 035 coming in a few weeks)!

Art by Pixar Post - T.J.
What's a great way to have some fun while you have to wait tirelessly for Inside Out to hit theaters? Of course there are many things you could do to pass the time until the June 19, 2015 release date, but rather than sit back and coast, we'd like you to join us in a fan art series titled, "Let's Draw Inside Out". The Let's Draw Inside Out series was suggested by Pixar Post Forum user PIX-R.113 and we loved the idea so much we created many sub-forums in anticipation of you, the artist, submitting your creations in a monthly format surrounding Inside Out.

The series is broken down by month to allow you to draw, sculpt or create fan artwork for each of the film's main characters before the film is released -

  • Joy - January 2015
  • Fear - February
  • Disgust - March
  • Anger - April
  • Sadness - May
  • Bing Bong - June 1-18
  • Riley - June 19-30

Since January wrapped up with Joy, we thought we'd summarize some of the artwork that our readers submitted, not only to showcase the work, but also to inspire you to join along and start thinking of how you would create a fan art piece for Fear in February. You can display your artwork on the Pixar Post Forum page dedicated to the Let's Draw Inside Out series. Check out some samples below from artists of all levels, ages and styles.

Luigi's Flying Tires Attraction Being to be Re-Imagined

Cars Land in Disney's California Adventure has immersed guests into the 'World of Cars' since it's grand opening back in 2012. The widely popular "land" features shops, restaurants and themed experiences set along the iconic Route 66, including three ride attractions - Mater's Junkyard Jamboree, Radiator Springs Racers and Luigi's Flying Tires. While the "Mater" and "Racer" attractions continue to draw large crowds, rumors have been swirling over the future of Luigi's Flying Tires as the attraction has had its share of speed bumps.

Today Disney Parks Blog announced that Luigi's Flying Tires would be closing on February 16, to be re-imagined into a completely new attraction opening early 2016. While full details have yet to be released the official concept art showcases new ride vehicles on what appears to be a trackless/turntable-less system. Disney also mentioned that the newly designed attraction will use updated technology, which had us wondering if the system will also be utilized on a Shanghai Disney attraction, as both are set to open in 2016.

Watch the Emotions Scatter To Avoid Brain Freeze in the Next 'Inside Out' Trailer

We've all experienced it, we've all winced from it and we've all laughed about it while slurping up our favorite frozen treats. What is it? Brain freeze. In Pixar's next trailer (as retweeted by Anger's vocalist, Lewis Black from Pixar's Inside Out Twitter page) we catch a bevy of new clips showing many happy moments from Riley's life - but one that had us rolling in laughter was when Riley sips her frozen drink a little too quick and sends the emotions running as they try to avoid brain freeze. Pure genius!

While the previous trailers we've seen highlight the ups and downs of Riley's emotions (as well as her parent's emotions), this trailer focuses on the lighter and more playful side of the movie. Check out the trailer below (as uploaded to the official Disney•Pixar YouTube) and be sure to let us know your thoughts by leaving a comment or chat about it in the Pixar Post Forum where people have already been chatting quite a bit about brain freeze. In fact, the comment that made us chuckle the most was from Forum User Bonnie who said, This scene will probably always come to mind every time I have a brain freeze from now on. "Sorry guys, it just tastes so good!"

Lee Unkrich's Dia De Los Muertos Film to be a Musical?

Nearly three years ago, John Lasseter provided a brief description of the slate of planned Pixar films at the 2012 CinemaCon, revealing details surrounding Inside Out, The Good Dinosaur as well as an untitled film that Lee Unkrich was developing based on the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. Although specific details are still under wraps for Unkrich's film as of today, we now have a brief glimpse into one major element of the film's development thanks to a ClassicFM interview with famed composer, Randy Newman. Assuming Newman's comments are accurate, it would appear that Pixar is making the leap into musicals with the Latin holiday (which honors the lives of those who have passed). Listen to a brief clip from the interview below.

With the celebratory nature of the holiday, known for its bright colors, flowers, parades and shrines we can certainly see how this film could fit as a musical, but we also wonder about your thoughts? Leave a comment below or chat about it on the Dia de los Muertos Pixar Post Forum page. Thanks as well to Forum user mynameiskhannie for getting the conversation started on the forum regarding Randy's interview.

'To Protect and Serve" Disney Store Die Cast Set

What if Sheriff were temporarily forced out of his role as the guardian of Radiator Springs? Who would take over during his absence? Well, in the upcoming Cars Toon, To Protect and Serve, we find two overzealous officers (Mike and Didi) trying to make their mark in law enforcement by dishing out citation on top of citation during Sheriff's mandatory vacation.

We exclusively broke the news of the upcoming Toon back in October 2014 and although an official air date has yet to be announced, we assume it will be coming to televisions soon since a die cast set was recently released at the Disney Store. The set features 1:43 scale versions of Mike 07 and Didi 05, along with Sheriff, Student Driver McQueen and Police Tape Mater (with removable tape cover). As previously reported, a 1:55 scale Mattel set is also planned featuring Mike, Didi and McQueen as well. (More details comparing scale sizes of die cast cars can be found here).

This afternoon People Magazine debuted the official theatrical poster for Inside Out on the Discover channel of the social media platform, Snapchat. The poster features an explosion of color and captures the signature expression for each of the emotion characters. Along with the release of the poster, People Magazine included a short interview with Mindy Kaling (the voice of Disgust). Below is a small snippet of the interview:

Why were you excited to be a part of this movie?
Mindy Kaling: It's a Pixar movie!
If you didn't play Disgust, which emotion would you want to play?
Mindy Kaling: I think I could've nailed "Outrage."
Which of the voices in your head is the loudest? Which are you encouraging to speak up more?
Mindy Kaling:These days I have been feeling so grateful for what I get to work on. Between Inside Out, The Mindy Project and writing my book, I'm so happy. I know actors who are miserable no matter what they are doing and complain constantly about their jobs, and I just don't identify with that at all. These are such great jobs to have and it doesn't feel like hard work when the material is so good.
Any emotion you think was left out of this movie?
Mindy Kaling:Nope, I think the emotions assembled are a great mix and complement each other really well.

It's always great to hear the voice actors share their thoughts on characters they bring to life, we hope that the future Inside Out Blu-ray release will include extras with each of the actors. Expansion Coming to Toy Story Midway Mania at Walt Disney World

For those who have taken a spin on Toy Story Midway Mania! at Disney's Hollywood Studios (Walt Disney World Resort), you know the popularity of this attraction. Since the opening on May 31, 2008 crowds have swarmed the ride from rope-drop to Extra Magic Hours - with wait times often exceeding 90 minutes. Disney Parks Blog recently released a quick statement sharing that there are plans in place to add additional track at Toy Story Midway Mania!

The released did not elaborate if the expansion means a longer ride experience or if additional video screens/ride vehicles will be added to help alleviate long wait times - but our guess would be that it will alleviate the long wait times. While the timeline for completion was also not revealed we can hope to hear additional details within the year. Be sure to share your thoughts with other fans on the Pixar Post Forum - a few fans were even chatting about an expansion of Pixar Place within the park. We even discussed the rumored expansion of Toy Story Midway Mania! from and earlier (September 2014) rumor - check it out and chat about what other expansions your mind can conjure up!

Storyline of 'Toy Story 4' to be a Romantic Comedy

Last November, during the Disney's quarterly earnings call Bob Iger stunned audiences with the news that John Lasseter would return to the director's chair to create, Toy Story 4. The film, releasing on June 16, 2017, was pulled together by none other than Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich and John Lasseter - who were the driving force between the first three Toy Story features.
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.” - John Lasseter

New Full-Length 'Inside Out' Trailer Reveals New Worlds Inside Riley's Mind

$
0
0

Just a few short days ago, Pixar playfully revealed that the second official Inside Out trailer would be released on March 10. After what seemed like an eternity (though in reality, it was only 4 days) the trailer has had its big debut. The exclusive release debuted bright and early on the official Ellen Show website - fitting as some of the vocal cast is set to appear on her show later today and throughout the week.

The trailer highlights the moment that Joy and Sadness get lost (inside Riley's mind) and the journey they take in order to get back to 'Headquarters'. An intriguing detail was that the characters seem to have the ability to change memory orbs to their core emotion simply by touching it - converting an otherwise joyous memory to a sad memory (if sadness touched a joy memory orb). As the duo attempts to fix the orb that sadness touched, they bump into the core memories creating a mess, thus having Joy and Sadness sucked out of the 'Headquarters' and into a world of 'Long Term Memory', 'Imagination Land' and 'Dream Productions' (just to name a few). This leaves behind Fear, Anger and Disgust in what appears to be a less-than-fully-functional control panel.

As the trailer continued it was interesting to see that Joy began to emote a different emotion (sadness) as it appears she misses Riley and the 'Headquarters'. Leaving us to think that each character will probably take on each others emotions at some point in the film. As a side note, we thought the clown character (pictured above) sounded a lot like reoccurring Pixar vocal talent, Jeff Garlin - what do you think? Share your thoughts below or in the Pixar Post Forum.

We loved getting a glimpse into Riley's mind beyond the 'Headquarters' and were happy that additional characters (such as 'Bing Bong' and the Dream Unicorn, both favorites from Pixar Post Forum community) weren't revealed too much - though they were seen in the background.

Now one thing that always stands out to us with each Pixar film are the details that the crew puts into each frame. From the lighting department to the incredible versatility of the animators with the 'Squash and Stretch' styling of Riley's mind - as well as the Simulation team adding the extra details, just to name a few.

Be sure to join us tonight on a live Google Hangout (details below) and share your thoughts with us on all the incredible new details from the trailer. With a little over three months until the release of the film (June 19, 2015), you can expect a lot more details, concept artwork and interviews until the film's release - which is of course great news for Pixar fans.  The official synopsis of Inside Out:
Growing up can be a bumpy road, and it's no exception for Riley, who is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Like all of us, Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy (Amy Poehler), Fear (Bill Hader), Anger (Lewis Black), Disgust (Mindy Kaling) and Sadness (Phyllis Smith). The emotions live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind, where they help advise her through everyday life. As Riley and her emotions struggle to adjust to a new life in San Francisco, turmoil ensues in Headquarters. Although Joy, Riley's main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive, the emotions conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house and school.

Josh Cooley Named as Co-Director of 'Toy Story 4'

Earlier this afternoon, Variety (via Stitch Kingdom) released an article titled "10 Animators to Watch" which included Pixarian, Josh Cooley - whom has most recently been busy as the head of story on Inside OutWithin the article it was announced that Cooley will be the co-director for Toy Story 4, which is the first time we have heard that another creative eye would be taking the reins along with John Lasseter for the film. Not long ago, Cooley finished directing a short film for the studio (similar to the shorts Your Friend the Rat and Burn-E) which will take place inside the world of Inside Out and appear as a bonus feature on the Blu-ray release. For Cooley the road to the director's chair didn't happen overnight as he's been with the studio since the production of Cars and has worked in the story department on Ratatouille, UP and Cars 2 (just to name a few).
He was chosen for that spot by the late Joe Ranft, probably the finest animation storyman of his generation. “Joe singled out Josh Cooley as a guy with potential, and Joe knew how to pick ‘em,” says “Inside Out” director Pete Docter. “Josh is funny, unique and collaborative. And funny.” While working on “Inside Out,” Cooley tried to follow Ranft’s example. “On ‘Cars,’ Joe always said about the story, ‘It’s the journey, not just the destination.’ He brought the same attitude to running the department: It’s working together and collaborating with everybody that’s the real treat.” - Variety
You may have also seen Cooleys' name noted early in various Pixar film credits as voicing Officer Phillips in Toy Story of Terror!, Omega in UP and Lizard Wizard/Cashier in Small Fry. Having previously directed the Pixar short, George & A.J., this transition to feature film director should be an exciting/challenging task and we look forward to seeing Cooley's point of view in 2017.

Be sure to share your thoughts with us on this exciting announcement on the Pixar Post Forum.

Fear & Joy are at Opposite Ends of the Emotional Scale in This Pair of 'Inside Out' Still Images

Along with the exciting release of the second full-length Inside Out trailer yesterday morning, a new pair of high resolution images were also released which showcase the truly relaxed and upbeat nature of Joy. The stark contrast between Joy's personality and the skittish nature of Fear is highlighted in the second image with a chaotic stack of paper flying through the air. We particularly think it's quirky and kind of cool that Fear touches his eyeballs in the same way a character would grab the top of their head - but since his eyes are so huge, it makes sense.

New Spanish 'Inside Out' Trailer Features Baby Riley & How the Emotions are Created - Updated

$

Last week Pixar released their second official Inside Out trailer which contained different lands and a few new characters within Riley's mind. Pixar fans were thrilled with the new footage from the second trailer and the theories and conversations have been plentiful on The Pixar Post Forum - many about the secretive Bing Bong character.

Well, today a new international Inside Out trailer (Spanish version) has just been released on Disney Espana YouTube Channel featuring many more scenes as well as a young (and adorable) Riley. The new animation highlights the moment when Riley is born and how the five emotions enter the 'Headquarters' based on Riley's experiences. The first emotion to appear is Joy, followed quickly by Sadness - which was a nice touch to highlight these two first as we know the duo wind up lost together inside Riley's mind.

While we do not speak Spanish (translation added to the comments below) one thing is clear, emotion is universal and we were nearly in tears over the new scenes of Riley's pure innocence and discovery from this trailer. It should also be noted that we appreciate that the character Bing Bong is still shrouded in mystery. While we believe this character will be a main focal point, we love that the "cotton candy, hobo, elephant" is left to our own imagination.

Updated March 17 - After viewing the trailer a few times, we noticed the first Easter Egg in Inside Out. During the quick scene where Riley is building a castle out of cards you will notice that the cards have an "R" on the back of them - look even closer and you will see images of Riley (in place of the Jack), Riley's Mom (in place of the Queen) and Riley's Dad (in place of the King)!

What do you think about the new trailer? Be sure to share your thoughts with us in The Pixar Post Forum. Thanks to Maxxie03 for spotting the trailer.

New International 'Inside Out' Trailer Showcases Dramatic Lighting & Riley's Sense of Sadness

$

Just a day ago, Disney Espana released the first International Inside Out trailer which centered around how the emotions were first created inside Riley's mind. The trailer showcased the humorous side of the characters with the main lighting and color scheme of the featured clips being bright and cheerful. As of late yesterday, a second International Inside Out trailer has been released - via the official Disney Japan YouTube Channel. This trailer was drastically different in emotion (compared to the Disney Espana version) as it focused on Riley's sense of loneliness/sadness.

The artistry of the newly released clips showcase a mood-changing grey scale lighting - along with the spot-on animation of Riley's outward sadness (as shown in her facial features and body language). We continue to be blown away by the developing storyline and with the release of this trailer we are even more thrilled with the realism of adolescence that is being displayed. Many Pixar fans have begun theories of their own wondering if Riley attempts to run away - what do you think? Join the conversation on The Pixar Post Forum and share your thoughts. Thanks to forum user "shadowjonathan" for spotting the trailer and to forum user "happyland" for translating the trailer.
