RS Team Lightning McQueen - Special Edition Die Cast Car Review

While wandering the isles of Target the other day we happened to spot a unique Cars die cast - a metallic (ransburg) edition of Lightning McQueen in an acrylic display case. We were really surprised to see this car for two reasons - first, we haven't seen this type of special edition release at Target before and second, because upon first glance it looks strikingly similar to the New York Toy Fair release. Check out our review video below and use the links below to purchase the car.

Our video review takes a look at the standard Mattel 1:55 die cast car. The outer box measures in at 7" length x 4" height x 3" depth, while the acrylic box measures in at 7.88" in length, 2.69" in height and 2.94" in depth.

Purchase the RS Team Lightning McQueen at Target or on eBay.

The 2014/2015 awards season is right around the corner and though Pixar did not release a feature film this year, their newest short, LAVA, has qualified to advance in the "For Your Consideration" (FYC) runnings. Labeling a film as FYC is a promotional tool for film studios to notify voting members of the media that this particular film is in contention for the upcoming awards honors. Join us in congratulating the crew of LAVA as they take this first step towards awards season.

The official Disney FYC site features the bios of Writer/Director, James Ford Murphy and Producer, Andrea Warren and will be updated over time to include additional "Media", "Press" and "Acclaim" information. LAVA has been winning over crowds on the film festival circuit and although its theatrical debut isn't set until June 19, 2015 alongside Inside Out, we're excited to learn more details of the seven-minute-and-nine-second musical short film. Stay tuned.

UPDATED - November 5, 2014

According to Indie Wire/Animation Scoop, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the 10 animated short films (listed below) that will advance to the voting process for the 87th Academy Awards and unfortunately LAVA was not among the list of films. While Pixar may be out of the Oscar race, LAVA could still be considered at the Annie Awards and Visual Effects Society Awards (VES).

We also wanted to congratulate former Pixarians Robert Kondo and Dice Tsutsumi on their advancement onto the Academy Award animated short film list for The Dam Keeper. The duo recently left Pixar to continue to promote their film, The Dam Keeper on the film festival circuit as well as start up their own studio, Tonko House.

Breaking - John Lasseter to Direct Toy Story 4 - Updated

Disney's quarterly earnings call took place Thursday afternoon and among the updates from the day, Bob Iger stunned audiences with the news that John Lasseter would return to the director's chair to create, Toy Story 4. The idea for the film, releasing on June 16, 2017, was pulled together by none other than Andrew Stanton, Pete Docter, Lee Unkrich and John Lasseter - who were the driving force between the first three Toy Story features. John Lasseter also elaborated on some of his excitement for the project -
“We love these characters so much; they are like family to us. We don’t want to do anything with them unless it lives up to or surpasses what’s gone before. Toy Story 3 ended Woody and Buzz’s story with Andy so perfectly that for a long time, we never even talked about doing another Toy Story movie. But when Andrew, Pete, Lee and I came up with this new idea, I just could not stop thinking about it. It was so exciting to me, I knew we had to make this movie—and I wanted to direct it myself.”

Listen below as Bob Iger reveals the news of Toy Story 4.

The news has had mixed reviews on social media, but we're remaining ever-optimistic as Pixar has created some of the most magical films in animation history. In fact, many people expressed similar concerns when Toy Story 3 was announced and that movie simply wowed audiences. Of course, it all comes down to story since we already have immense love and respect for the film's characters. To that end, Pixar has green lit the writing team of Rashida Jones and Will McCormack (Celeste and Jesse Forever) to handle the script while Galyn Susman (Toy Story of TERROR! and Toy Story That Time Forgot) will produce the film.

courtesy IMDb - McCormack photo © Imeh Akpanudosen courtesy IMDb

Adding to the big news of the day, John Lasseter also sat down and talked with the Los Angeles Times to discuss the project and had this to say -
Toy Story 4 will be a love story and will pick up where Toy Story 3 left off, when Woody, Buzz Lightyear and the rest of the series' toy chest of characters were handed down to a little girl named Bonnie.
A lot of people in the industry view us doing sequels as being for the business of it, but for us it's pure passion. We only make sequels when we have a story that's as good as or better than the original. We don't just, because of the success of a film, automatically say we're going to do a sequel and then figure out what we're going to do.

After the news of the release settled in our minds, we immediately thought of the existing slate of Pixar films coming out and wondered how this would fit into the mix. Would this film push back another film in production? Would it simply be added to the list? Only time will tell, but here is the timeline of films that have been announced to date:

  • Inside Out - June 19, 2015
  • The Good Dinosaur - November 25, 2015
  • Finding Dory - June 17, 2016
  • Toy Story 4 - June 16, 2017
  • Lee Unkrich's untitled film about the Dia De Los Muertos holiday - Date unknown
  • Cars 3 - Date unknown
  • The Incredibles 2 - Date unknown

In less than 17 days the premiere of Toy Story That Time Forgot, featuring the delusional Battlesaurs gang, will air on ABC (December 2, 2014 at 8:00 PM EST / PST). We spotted the first hilarious teaser last month, but yesterday (thanks to our reader Aidan), we noticed a second commercial for the 21-minute special on the Disney Channel. The Disney Channel teaser was released a few weeks back simply noting that the special was "coming soon" - but when we were able to catch the commercial again, we noticed that the commercial noted a December 12, 2014 premiere date on the Disney Channel.

Be sure to check out the updated commercial with additional footage from Toy Story That Time Forgot below.

In case you missed the first teaser, we have embedded the video below along with the hilarious Sky Broadband advertisement for the television special as well.

Pixar's next full length film, Inside Out, hits North American theaters on June 19, 2015 and although we've seen a few promotional posters in the U.S., the newly released international posters are fantastic. In addition to the updated designs, we also have an updated look at a few of the main characters - the emotions. Both styles of poster feature the same poses for Anger, Fear, Disgust and Sadness, but there are two different poses for Joy.

Have you ever had a case of the "Mondays"? Well, the perfectly-timed image release of Inside Out's aptly blue colored emotion, Sadness, was released via Mashable today. We knew the characters were made of particulate matter but as we get more high resolution looks at this movie, we're absolutely loving the details. As usual, Pixar is outdoing themselves again - if you look closely at Sadness' hair (shown below) the glittery glow is a beautiful conglomerate of dots in shades of indigo. Similarly, the "sweater fuzz" is so wonderfully close to life you can imagine the softness of the threads.

Pixar also uploaded a brief video of Sadness walking onto the screen in a sullen manner. If you are familiar with the first Inside Out teaser trailer, you'll notice that this isn't a new clip of Saddness though as this was shown at the close of the trailer.

We drooled over the details in Sadness' hair and mentioned that we couldn't wait to see the character profiles for the remaining emotions. Well today, thanks to MouseInfo, the remaining four characters profiles for Disgust, Fear, Joy and Anger were released - rounding out the emotional team members. 'The Good Dinosaur' Updated Concept Artwork & Additional Story Details

$

0

The LA Times released an article this evening highlighting a series of changes in store for The Good Dinosaur along with a new piece of concept artwork. The article really excites us regarding the story changes which have taken place as well as reveals a new piece of concept art which has a similarity to the original concept art released at the 2013 D23 Expo (shown below). So, what's new, what elements were changed and what about the directing change to Peter Sohn? We have summarized the elements of the article which answer those questions - to read the full article, head over to LA Times.

WHAT ELEMENTS STAYED THE SAME

As in Peterson's version, the film still posits that an asteroid never hit the Earth and the dinosaurs never went extinct; a teenage Apatosaurus named Arlo takes a wild, young human boy named Spot as a pet.
We were excited to see that the premise for the story remained - the idea of the dinosaurs not becoming extinct after an asteroid missed the Earth was extremely intriguing to us.

WHAT ELEMENTS CHANGED

Over the last year, Sohn has been quietly streamlining the story, a buddy comedy about a teenage dinosaur and a human boy, in preparation for a November 2015 release. "The heart of the story remains the same," Sohn said, in an interview last week. "It's always been about this young dinosaur growing up. But the world itself has changed a lot. Nature has become a character." Sohn has jettisoned some of Peterson's signature ideas, such as modeling the dinosaurs on Amish farmers, and added new elements, including treating nature as the film's antagonist.
If you are a listener of our podcast, on episode 020 we discussed our thoughts on which elements would stay and which would change. T.J. had predicted that the dinosaurs as farmers would eventually be cut and Julie had suggested that Spot (who was originally noted would only speak like a caveman) would have a speaking role. Although we'll have to wait to see if Spot will speak more clearly, we do know that the dinosaurs are no longer farmers.

MORE DETAILS ON PETER SOHN & BOB PETERSON

We especially liked the section which shined light on how Sohn was eventually slotted into the Director's chair and were happy to see a quick note about what veteran Pixarian (and original The Good Dinosaur) director is working on.
Sohn got the "Good Dinosaur" job after he presented a possible new version of the film in storyboards last summer, according to producer Denise Ream. Because of Sohn's relative inexperience, Ream enlisted some of Pixar's veteran department heads to help him finish "The Good Dinosaur," including production designer Harley Jessup and director of photography-lighting Sharon Calahan, both of whom lent "Ratatouille" much of its visual richness.
Peterson remains at Pixar and, according to Morris, has been working on Docter's next film, "Inside Out," and on "Finding Dory" as a writer.

What are your thoughts on the new concept art as well as the changes which were revealed? Leave a comment below or chat about it further on the Pixar Post Forum dedicated to The Good Dinosaur.

Thanks to Dan the Pixar Fan for the heads up on the new concept artwork.

WHAT UP FISHES?! If you are an avid Disney•Pixar pin collector, or a fan of the hilarious Partysaurus Rex, then you will definitely want to add this pin to your collection. The pin was originally set to release in September but was pushed back with an undefined release date. We're excited to announce that you can now purchase this pin at Disney parks - While talking to guest services they informed us that the pin is currently only sold at Walt Disney World, though it should be making its way to Disneyland shortly. If you can't make it to the Disney parks anytime soon be sure to contact Disney Merchandise Guest Services by telephone at (877) 560-6477 and order yours today.

If they happen to be sold out at the parks, you can always check eBay for the Partysaurus Rex pin at this link or this link. The reason we have two search links in this case is because some people have the pin listed as "Partysaurus" and others have it listed as "Party saurus" and eBay doesn't see those as the same search term.

'The Good Dinosaur' New Story Element & Concept Artwork

$

The Good Dinosaur hits theaters less than one year from now (November 25, 2015) and Pixar announced the one-year countdown by releasing a new piece of concept artwork along with an updated synopsis. Although we had already updated the concept artwork on our earlier post, we also decided to read the synopsis again to check if it was also updated - sure enough it was. Although the details mostly remain the same, we were excited to catch one new story element in the new plot description - a mention of a traumatic event happening within Arlo's family.

The Good Dinosaur asks the generations-old question: What if the asteroid that forever changed life on Earth missed the planet completely and giant dinosaurs never became extinct? In theaters November 25, 2015, the film is a humorous and exciting original story about Arlo, a lively Apatosaurus with a big heart. After a traumatic event unsettles Arlo’s family, he sets out on a remarkable journey, gaining an unlikely companion along the way - a human boy. “The Good Dinosaur” is an extraordinary journey of self-discovery full of thrilling adventure, hilarious characters and poignant heart.

So, what are your thoughts on the "traumatic event" which unsettles Arlo's family? What could this be? Leave a comment below or chat about it in the Pixar Post Forum dedicated to The Good Dinosaur. If you haven't read the additional story details which were updated last week, be sure to read more here.

Tim Allen & Rashida Jones Chat About 'Toy Story 4' on 'The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon'

This past week was a nice treat for Pixar fans, as Tim Allen and Rashida Jones stopped by The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on separate episodes to chat about their upcoming projects. Fallon took the time to ask each of them about their involvement with the recently announced, Toy Story 4. Tim, the voice of Buzz Lightyear, jokes about working with Tom Hanks, while Rashida, who is penning the fourth installment of the franchise, really got us laughing as she, "can't talk about it". Jimmy also had us rolling when he asked Rashida what it's like inside Pixar Studios - his idea of Pixar is that everyone is on hover boards eating astronaut ice cream!

'Toy Story That Time Forgot' Spoiler-Free Review, Air Dates and Images

Screenshots courtesy of TV Guide / Pixar

Pixar's second 30-minute television special, Toy Story That Time Forgot, is set to premiere on December 2 and features many of your favorite friends from the Toy Story gang - along with a slew of new characters. The special finds Buzz, Woody, Jessie, Rex, Trixie, Mr. Pricklepants, Mr. Potato Head and the new, Angel Kitty, battling to find sanity among the Battlesaurs. The Battlesaurs are a band of delusional dinosaur toys who are so new they've yet to figure out that they're toys (similar to how Buzz was delusional upon first arriving at Andy's).

The special kicks off with Bonnie being invited to a friend's house for a post-Christmas play-date, where she (of course) brings along some of her toys. Upon arriving at the house, Bonnie quickly gets distracted by her friend's new gaming system, leaving her toys to fend for themselves among the Battlesaurs. So we don't spoil anything ahead of time, that's all we'll say about the story specifics at this point - but be sure to head back the day after the short airs as we'll post our complete and detailed review, complete with hidden items like the Pizza Planet Truck and Luxo Jr. Ball.

We immediately fell in love with the new characters - Angel Kitty's adorable nature and soft-spoken voice endears you to her immediately and the Battlesaurs are so brilliantly designed that you cannot help but love them right away. The animation of the characters, specifically Reptillus Maximus is stunning - the way he moves when being introduced into the short is genius. His movements (as seen in the sneak peek from IGN below) showcase his confident and suave nature without coming across as arrogant.

Our personal favorite character is the Cleric - the wise elder of the Battlesaurs. His character design, vocal work (provided by director, Steve Purcell) and shaky plastic-like movements are so great. You can tell the Pixar team put an enormous amount of effort in getting the Battleasurs "just right" - heck, they even have their own theme song which is in the special as well!

As we often talk about with Pixar's work, the lighting is amazing and really gives you a desert grittiness and warmth that you'd expect to see in a gladiator-type setting. Steve Purcell's brilliant direction and work with the layout team really shines in this special as well. The shot selections and camera angles really added to the suspense and paired perfectly against the music composition by Michael Giacchino. Sadly, there are no plans to release a soundtrack for Toy Story That Time Forgot, which was released for Toy Story of TERROR!, but the music is nonetheless fantastic. The score is dark and brooding in times of battle yet completely subtle and tasteful in the quiet moments of the special.

Overall, we can't recommend Toy Story That Time Forgot enough - be sure to watch the special on December 2 at 8:00 PM local time (additional air dates and channels listed below) and then head back to our site on December 3 (10:00 PM EST / 7:00 PM PST) to chat about the special on our Live On-Air Google Hangout. We can't wait to hear your thoughts - you can watch & chat along when we go live directly on this page (in the embedded video below), on YouTube or directly on Google+. Also, you can start tweeting in your thoughts and questions in the comments section below, chat about it in the Pixar Post Forum (readers are already listing some of the hidden Easter Eggs), or tweet using the hashtag #TSTTF (short for Toy Story That Time Forgot) and we'll summarize the best comments and questions.

We continue to be impressed with director Steve Purcell as he did an amazing job leading the team in the production of the television special. From the incredible camera angles that the team chose, to the impeccable animation and character design - Toy Story That Time Forgot proves to be another gem in the Pixar lineup and we hope it is also a big winner at this year's Annie Awards.

In-Depth Look at the Easter Eggs Hidden in Toy Story That Time Forgot

Pixar's second television special, Toy Story That Time Forgot, premiered last night December 2 and as we all gazed upon the incredible work of the team we were thrilled to find that the film was full of easter eggs. Take a look at what we have found so far and see if you found any that we haven't yet.

In the opening holiday scene we are greeted by a familiar character, Knick Knack! Stuck in his signature snow globe he seems to fit into the scene so seamlessly that we nearly missed him. In the same frame our eyes were also drawn to a bird near the gingerbread house that resembles one of the characters from the short For The Birds. There was also an ornament on the Christmas tree that reminded us of the ending moon image from the short La Luna - though it could just be a coincidence.

Did you notice the train underneath the Christmas tree in Bonnie's house? You'll notice the famed Luxo ball on the side of the train as well as on the boxes of The Battlesaurs.

Speaking of trains, did you happen to spot the train from Toy Story 3 in Mason's playroom?!

It wouldn't be a Pixar film if we couldn't find the Pizza Planet Truck, you can see it on the table next to some Lego brick buildings (you can also see the Pizza Planet Truck at the end of the film during the credits).

In every film there's the one easter egg that blows us away or just makes us smile and this would be that one - Mr. Jones from Toy Story of Terror! He is resting in his terrarium up high on a shelf in the playroom.

This next easter egg can be seen a few times but only briefly, it is a Japanese poster featuring Transitron from Toy Story of Terror!

Keeping with the theme of items from Toy Story of Terror! we spotted a police car toy that looks quite familiar to the police car from the end of the film - what do you think?

The scene above seemed to be littered with easter eggs and Pixar references, from names on board game boxes (Pixarians and a nod to For The Birds) as well as an image of Nemo and Dory - which defiantly caught us by surprise.

While we were watching Toy Story That Time Forgot we were hoping for a Partysaurus Rex easter egg and were delighted when we spotted the orange starfish in an unfortunate situation with the Battlesaurs. We also pondered if the foot could be from Pocketeer and the arm be from Combat Carl?

Did you happen to notice that Bonnie and Mason are playing the Buzz Lightyear video game from Toy Story 2? You've gotta be quick to see it as it's only on the screen for about 2.5 seconds.

Lastly, if you happen to be a Star Wars fan you may have heard a familiar line during Toy Story That Time Forgot from our favorite character, The Cleric stating to the Toy Story gang "I find your lack of armor disturbing"(the original line was by Darth Vader stating "I find your lack of faith disturbing")

We have one word for the entire Toy Story That Time Forgot team and that would be "WOW!" As we continue to compile more and more easter egg from the film, be sure to watch and see what you can find - see below for a complete list of showings
