Three Beautiful New Posters Released for The Blue Umbrella and How to Buy the Short

The Huffington Post recently released three exclusive poster images for The Blue Umbrella. Just like the short itself, the images capture a simplistic beauty that only director Saschka Unseld and his team could perfect. Each poster perfectly evokes a different emotion from three main parts of the film - initial joy, the ensuing danger and the beauty of love.

We can only hope that these posters will be available for Pixar employees at the Pixar Animation Studio Store, or perhaps on the road during some of the film festivals in which Unseld will be on-hand to present the film to eager audiences (details on the upcoming Hamptons International Film Festival - showing Oct 13 & 14 in New York).

During the interview with the Huffington Post, Unseld revealed how a unique misread of a storyboard changed the ending of the film in a delightful way,

"In my initial pitch and for a long time, the owners of the umbrellas sat inside the cafe and drank tea to warm up, while the umbrellas are in the foyer of the cafe, just standing there to dry...Then there was a moment where we test-screened those reels, and someone misread that, because the storyboards are sometimes so rough. So we got a note that someone in the meeting said, 'Oh, it was such a great idea that they sit outside in the rain because of course the owners love the rain as well.' I was like, 'What are you talking about?' He was like, 'Oh, I read the storyboard like that.' It wasn't what we drew, but it was an amazing idea. So that's how that came to be. It was just about listening to these moments and then just knowing what to pick up and change, because it fits better to the story, and what not to do."

Saschka also surprised fans by announcing via Twitter that you can now purchase the short film by itself on iTunes. This is the first time the short has been made available for sale outside of the existing Monsters University digital version which came out October 8 and the Blu Ray version which will be available on October 29.

Be on the Lookout for Easter Eggs in Toy Story of Terror - UPDATED

Pixar never fails to give the audience a plethora of hidden items and references to find within their films and with the release of Toy Story of Terror (Pixar's first 30-minute television special) we won't be disappointed as a list of some of the easter eggs has been revealed.

UPDATED - after you read through the great easter eggs in this post, be sure to head over and read our review of Toy Story of Terror where we reveal even more hidden items that we spotted while watching the film!

Images © Pixar Animation Studios

This past week Hypable was able to both preview and interview producer, Galyn Susman, and director, Angus MacLane. During their discussion, MacLane explained how John Lasseter thought the original version of Toy Story of Terror was a little too scary, “But we’re glad it was that,” Susman added, “and that he didn’t say ‘it isn’t scary enough.’ Better to end up with something that’s too scary, because it’s easier to take away from something than have to figure out what to add.”

Though Toy Story of Terror is a television short Pixar fanatics won't be disappointed - as many of the feature film type easter eggs will be hidden within the short film. As discussed on Hypable and on D23, a few of the easter eggs were revealed and though the the short may have tamed down the spookiness, there is still a horror-film element to the easter eggs. The easter eggs and references you can expect to see will be:

  • The famed Pizza Planet Truck
  • References to The Good Dinosaur
  • In an article from D23, be sure to keep a lookout for the graveyard scene of the short and your eyes on the gravestones as they pay homage to deceased Pixar characters, such as Coral the clownfish (Finding Nemo), Gusteau (Ratatouille) and Simon J. Paladino "Gazerbeam" (The Incredibles) whose gravestone reads "A public servant with a unique vision".
  • Be sure to spot the references from classic horror films such as The Shining (similar motel key like the one from the Overlook Hotel), Predator (with Combat Carl being voiced by Carl Weathers reprising a line from the movie, "over here, look over here) Night of the Living Dead (with the line, “I’m coming to get you Betsy,” that compares to “I’m coming to get you Barbara”) and even has a reference to Silence of the Lambs.

The locations were revealed for both the Pizza Planet Truck and The Good Dinosaur reference - however, we decided not to include it prior to the airing as it's always more fun to find it yourself. Although this list only includes three easter eggs, MacLane did mention to Hypable that the short will include more hidden items, so keep your eyes peeled on ABC at 8PM EST when Toy Story of Terror premieres and let us know what you find!

Toy Story of Terror - Concept Art Follows One Frame From Beginning to End

In the same way that Pixar released great concept artwork for Monsters University and Braveleading up to their theatrical releases, the studio is following suit for their upcoming spooktacular television special, Toy Story of Terror!. The concept art, released via TV.com, follows one particular frame through a sequence called "Sleep Well Motel" (which must be the name of the motel that the gang stops at for the night). In addition to the great images, you can also read about additional facts - a few of which we have highlighted below.

The image in the upper-left is one of approximately 27,171 storyboards created for the upcoming television special. In an interesting comparison (as we learned from these fun facts) there were 100,856 storyboards drawn for Monsters University. And in case you wanted to get nerdy for a moment (and I do), that would mean that there were approximately 970 storyboards drawn for each minute of the final film for Monsters University (104 minute film) - whereas there were approximately 1,208 storyboards drawn for each minute of the final twenty-two-and-a-half minute film for Toy Story of Terror!. Whew, that's a lot of sketches and digital ink flying around! I wouldn't have imagined that there would be proportionally more storyboards for the special as there were for Monsters University, would you?

Following the remaining images - in the upper right, you can see what the Art Department (John Lee) created to give the downstream teams a feel for the mood and lighting for the scene. In the middle left, the Modeling department is when the characters and sets are created in the frame. The middle right frame shows the Layout department's work, in which the varying camera angles are defined. In the lower left, the Animation department works to bring life to the characters while the Simulation department also adds detail work to the characters and set pieces (e.g., fur, cloth, texture). Finally, in the lower right, the Lighting department (this scene lit by Nick Bartone) works their magic to create the final mood of the scene and bring us what we're accustomed to viewing on our screens. Magic!

Toy Story of Terror Soundtrack Review - It's Full of Drama!

$

With the broadcast of the highly anticipated Toy Story of Terror! television special just one day away in North America (airing Oct 27 & on demand on Oct 25 in the UK), the wait is almost over. The good news is that as of today you can download the full 21-minute soundtrack that accompanies the spooky, yet hilarious special. If you're avoid spoilers though, you may want to wait until after the air date to listen to the soundtrack as the song titles may give away some moments from the short.

As we've known for quite some time, the soundtrack itself is scored by Pixar veteran composer, Michael Giacchino (The Incredibles, Ratatouille, Up, Cars 2, One Man Band and La Luna). We can confidently say that if you're a fan of Michael's other works, this will not disappoint you in any way. The soundtrack is full of Giacchino's usual flare, but this time you also get the added bonus of traditional horror film elements as well.

From the pacing of the soundtrack, you can tell there are going to be plenty of moments while watching the film that will make you jump in your seat. The quiet moments build to a momentous punch of strings and horns on "Why'd It Have to Be Crawl Spaces?" in a way that you've come to anticipate in a horror film (like when someone jumps out from behind a corner). The soundtrack is split into two sections where the first half really builds the layers of worry and despair, while the second half really accents the heroic and action-packed moments when we're introduced to Combat Carl. The track, "Ballad of Combat Carl" is one of the only character themes that we're introduced to in the soundtrack with brassy, militant touches that truly let you know that Carl is a war hero who's seen his share of battles.

"World's Worst Curtain Call" contains a few quick throw-backs to the Toy Story soundtrack which is really great to hear. Those familiar character cues really take you back to the feelings of heroism that you get when watching the now-classic Toy Story franchise.

We couldn't be happier with the soundtrack and are extremely pleased that Pixar decided to release the official score to pair with the film's release. Now all you have to do is wait until tomorrow night (October 16th) to see how the soundtrack melds with the film's visuals.

You can pick up the soundtrack on Amazon or on iTunes (sample the songs below).

After you've had a chance to listen to the tracks, we'd also love to hear your thoughts on the soundtrack and place your vote in the Pixar Post Forum for your favorite track. My favorite track is "No One Puts Jessie in the Box" for it's amazing swell and emotion starting at 0:54 - wow!

Toy Story of Terror "Behind the Scenes" and Fun Facts

$

Disney•Pixar has just released a quick "behind the scenes" look at Toy Story of Terror! with additional insights from Director, Angus MacLane and Producer, Galyn Susman. The video is packed with additional never-before-seen snippets from the film that really play up the hilarity as well as some throwbacks to Angus' short film, Small Fry. Who couldn't help make the comparison to Small Fry when we saw the figure Combat Carl Junior - which completely pairs with the Buzz and mini-Buzz as featured in the short. Enjoy the video and then read some additional fun facts we compiled below.

FUN FACTS

You can't go wrong with some behind the scenes facts, so we wanted to put together a few fun facts that we have found regarding the film. So, did you know that something in the film was actually not CG animation? Did you know that the film is separated into four "acts" as opposed to Pixar's standard three "acts"? Read on to learn more.

Director, Angus MacLane recently mentioned in this Disney Insider post that, everything you’ll see on screen is indeed computer animated with the exception of one element–a bat you see flying through a spooky graveyard was in fact a prop filmed on a green screen. “That effect of the cheesy rubber bat was amazingly achieved, brilliantly by doing it the old fashioned way: ordering a few bats off of the internet and seeing which was the floppiest.” How would you have liked to have been on that research team to have to locate rubber bats online?!

Pixar fans will also find it interesting that Andrew Stanton helped develop the 40-page script for Toy Story of Terror!. Previously, Stanton had a hand in co-writing the previous Toy Story films as well as writing and directing other films at Pixar Animation Studios (Wall-E and Finding Nemo).

As many know, Pixar's feature and short films can take years to create and Toy Story of Terror! is no exception as it took a team of roughly 150 Pixarians nearly two-and-a-half years to complete. What we found to be interesting from a WSJ article was how Stanton assisted in the creation of the short having four separate "acts" which will allowed the film to flow better with television commercials - however, in regular feature films/shorts the story is broken down into three acts. "Nobody at Pixar knows anything about television," said Galyn Susman, the film's producer, "so the storytelling perspective had to be completely different."

Fans of the Toy Story franchise will be interested to know that Toy Story of Terror is set just six-months after Toy Story 3 (leaving Bonnie at the same age as we last her) - though we tend to think that Toy Story of Terror is set AFTER PartySaurus Rex, as Bonnie's mom eludes to going to her Grandmother's house in the short as Bonnie gets out of her rave-inspired the bath. What do you think? Does this literally pick up as Bonnie changes and gets out of the bath? That would be a really amazing connection if it were the case (in our eyes).

Did you know that the film had approximately 27,171 storyboards? In an interesting comparison there were 100,856 storyboards drawn for Monsters University. Learn more about the animation process for Toy Story of Terror! in our previous post.

Some of the new characters are:

Additionally, we were also really excited to learn of the studio's commitment to keep these amazing characters "alive" for future generations of kids and kids-at-heart. "We've got to constantly keep these characters alive and in the younger kids' minds," said Jim Morris, Pixar's general manager and a member of the "brain trust," a collective of executives and filmmakers who green light and shape each of the studio's projects. Mr. Morris has been discussing an evergreen television special with Mr. Lasseter since he arrived at the company in 2005 and also mentioned that if Toy Story of Terror! is well received that they would be more likely to produce additional television specials - which we would absolutely love to see. It's an amazing thing to be able to unveil a new brand new story with some of favorite character in our home.

Be sure to also brush up of a few more fun facts and learn about the easter eggs that will also be hidden in Toy Story of Terror! in our earlier post - there you'll learn about more of the fun references to traditional horror films as well as what hidden items (e.g., Pizza Planet Truck) to keep an eye out for while watching tomorrow night.

Toy Story of Terror - Our Delightful Terrifying Review with LOTS of Hidden Easter Eggs

Tonight, October 16, 2013 was a great night for Pixar fans as the premier of their first 30-minute television special aired in the North America. We have been waiting with deep anticipation to view this incredible film for quite some time and it was definitely worth the wait as the entire Toy Story of Terror team delivered one delightfully terrifying film. Read on as we discuss our favorite moments from the film as well as some of the hidden items we spotted along the way. Be careful though - this review will contain some spoilers.

UPDATED - As we've been finding additional references, we've been adding them below to our list - if there's a hidden reference we've missed, be sure to let us know!

Our Review & Technical Details

From the very first shot of Toy Story of Terror the team had our attention as the Toy Story gang watched a spooky Dracula-like film in the trunk of the car on their way to Bonnie's grandmother's house. Though this film was originally slated as Jessie's staring role, we also feel that Mr. Pricklepants, with his narration, was also a star - creating drama and comedic appeal throughout the film.

As the film kicked off you may have noticed that there was one element of the introduction that wasn't animated - that being the floppy bat that was featured in the first few seconds of the film. The bat was actually filmed on a green screen and then added to the scene. The beginning of the film also showcased some classic horror-film lighting similar to Hitchcock classics as a streak of light focused on Betsy's eyes (the girl in the Dracula film).

Not only did the storyline catch our attention, but the animation detail was outstanding. As many Pixar fans know, animating rain was once a difficult task to take on (A Bug's Life), now it seems almost effortless (not only with this film but also with The Blue Umbrella). Watching those rainy scenes looked so realistic that the entire animation, lighting and simulation teams deserve a standing ovation - especially for the rain streaks along Bonnie's moms car as she sped down the road.

The detail didn't stop at the rainy scenes as the team continued their efforts into the Sleep Well Motel. Most of the background content in scenes can go completely unnoticed, however we tend to gravitate and focus on these details. In the lobby of the motel there was the trash can with a trash bag tied tightly to secure it in the can - this really caught our eye. The realism and accuracy that went into that one item really shows that the team at Pixar is dedicated to not only making a great story but creating a full visual experience that is steeped in realism.

Another scene that visually blew us away was the bathroom. Yes, the bathroom scene. Not only was the animation flawless as it looked beyond realistic but it was again the attention to detail that brought the scene to life. From the uneven caulking on the tiles near the tub to the scuffed towel ring on the wall, it was a perfect scene. Now when you add the lighting, with its dull fluorescent feel, the bathroom was perfectly matched to the feel of a real motel look.

Speaking of the bathroom, that's also when we were introduced to Mr. Jones, the adorable iguana. We have to say that we loved the animation of Mr. Jones - when he excitedly smacks his head on the bell to signify that he has found a new toy, it couldn't have been more perfectly put together. We also loved at the end of the short when Jessie kicks Mr. Jones' face, how great the squash and stretch of the hit was executed. We were also completely taken with the detail and realism inside of Mr. Jones' mouth - the saliva looked like saliva, the textures were fantastic and his uneven row of teeth all solidifies why we love Pixar - it's the little things.

One moment that we still can't get out of our heads was when Jessie was in the shipping box and was about to get trapped as the delivery woman started to seal the box. Between the way the scene was edited (with its fast cutting), the heartbeat sounds added in the background and the thin shaft of light creeping into the box, you couldn't help but feel Jessie's panic.

Toy Story of Terror was a great film and was over in the blink of an eye - we wished that it could have been an hour-long special (though that would be a tad too close to a feature film). We have so many favorite moments and technical details that stood out to us we couldn't possibly list them all. But one line that really cracked us up was when the ever-so-sarcastic Mr. Potatohead says to Mr. Pricklepants "Can it Pants! Life ain't a movie, they're never coming back!"Frankly, we're still laughing about it as we're typing it.

Not only did Pixar do a great job, but we were also quite taken with Michael Giacchino's musical accompaniment to the film. Not only did his score enhance the scenes but added that subtle drama and suspense that horror films are known for without making it too creepy - it was just right. Be sure to read our review of the Toy Story of Terror soundtrack as well.

Hidden References & Easter Eggs

Below are a list of Easter Eggs and Hidden References that we found in Toy Story of Terror so far - have you found any additional items?

Did you notice the two Pizza Planet references? You'll find the first reference on Bonnie's mom's car - her license plate holder says "I brake for Pizza Planet".

The second Pizza Planet reference can be seen inside the motel, but you'll have to look very closely as it's on a poster hanging in motel manager Ron's office.

If you are a fan of horror films you may have seen a similarity between the Sleep Well Motel key and the infamous 237 key from The Shining.

If you look at the artwork in the motel located just above the beds you'll see that there is a reference to The Good Dinosaur. The artwork shows a couple dinosaurs near trees in an open field - perhaps farming?

The famed Pixar ball makes an appearance as well - however you may just miss it if you blink your eyes. Located in the bathroom, the Pixar ball is actually stamped on the underside of the sink where Combat Carl and Jessie first meet.

Who paid $2,000 for Woody on the eBid Auction site? If you had a hunch it would be Al McWhiggin from Al's Toy Barn you would be correct. Though the image is slightly blurry you can make out that this box was about to be shipped to Al's Toy Barn. Interestingly, Al was originally going to be shown for a brief moment (in his famed chicken suit), but was later cut due to time constraints for the film (as stated by Andrew Stanton).

A keen-eyed reader on our Forum noticed an interesting tidbit about Jessie when she was listed for sale on eBid. She was originally listed for sale at $19.99 which pairs nicely with the fact that we first met Jessie in the 1999 release of Toy Story 2.

It's always a fun added bonus to hear a familiar voice in Pixar film as many Pixarians lend their voices to characters. However, it would be hard to recognize Peter Sohn as he voiced Transitron. Sohn previously voiced Recycle Ben (Small Fry),  Emile (Ratatouille) and Squishy (Monsters University).

Did you know that there is a BnL (Buy-N-Large) credit card? Again, you'll have to look quick but towards the end of the film you'll notice that on the door of the motel they proudly accept the BnL Credit Card.

In the background of the manager's office in the motel you'll notice a familiar lamp - now we can't confirm if this a nod to Luxo Jr., but it does look very referential - don't you think?

If you think that Combat Carl's attire looks familiar, perhaps it's because it mirrors almost exactly to the wardrobe of Arnold Schwarzenegger's character in the film Predator.

If you look closely you may notice a familiar character on Bonnie's t-shirt, DJ Blu-Jay from Pixar's Small Fry Toy Story toon (also directed by Angus MacLane).

Director Angus MacLane and Pixarian Josh Cooley lent their voices to Officer Wilson (MacLane) and Officer Phillips (Cooley). One thing that we did notice was that the when the officers are standing next to each other you can read their name tags as "Wilson Phillips" - do you think this was a reference to the 90's vocal group Wilson Phillips? Perhaps not but it still made us laugh.

There were so many references and easter eggs found in the film that we couldn't get images for all of them - below is a list of those items.
  • There is a post-it note on the computer located in the manager's office that has a direct quote from the film Hard Eight - "Never ignore a man's courtesy". We can't help but wonder if this is a direct reference or who decided to write it on the post-it, but it's a fun one.
  • The auction site eBid notes that they are the "#2 Auction Website".
  • It's also worth noting that Bonnie's grandmother perhaps lives in Arizona as this is where the Sleep Well Motel was located. At the beginning of the film, Bonnie's Mom mentions that they'll arrive in "a few more hours".
  • Combat Carl (voiced by Carl Weathers) had a missing right hand, which mirrors the character he played (Chubbs) in the film Happy Gilmore, also missing his right hand.
  • Bonnie's moms car isn't a Hybrid, it's a Hybird!
  • Do you think that the Lego Bunny was a nod to director Angus MacLane as he is a Lego aficionado?
  • We also thought it was funny to read all the descriptions of the toys that the Sleep Well Motel manager was selling. For instance, Mr. Pricklepants was listed as a "German Beaver". How hilarious is that?
  • Ron, the manager's eBid User Name is IGUANALUVR75 - which makes sense with his unusually speedy and dog-like pet.
  • A Raising Arizona reference was also spotted as the Sleep Well Motel is located on State Farm Rd. #31, Tempe AZ (which was the address for Maricopa County Maximum Security Correctional Facility For Men in the film Raising Arizona).
  • We also noticed a familiar sound throughout the film - that being the sounds of RC the car that were used for the forklift toy.
  • Read more about some additional Easter Eggs in our earlier previous post, such as who's names appear on the gravestones at the beginning of the film and which classic horror films are referenced in Toy Story of Terror as well.

We can't help but praise the entire Toy Story of Terror team on this incredible accomplishment and we would absolutely love to see another 30-minute television special in the future. Be sure to let us know what you spotted while watching and what your favorite moments were from the film on the Pixar Post Forum Toy Story of Terror discussion.

Is Cars 3 in the Works at Pixar?

$
0
0

Since the release of Pixar's seventh feature film, Cars, back in June 2006 the franchise has only continued to grow in popularity. Spurring the release of the sequel, Cars 2 in June 2011 as well as multiple shorts featuring these beloved characters (Cars Toons and Cars Toons Shorty Shorts).

There have been twelve Cars Toons and three Cars Toons Shorty Shorts released since Cars hit theaters and it's safe to say more will be on the way. Fans of Cars have been given countless ways to continue to connect with the heartfelt movie, including the amazingly accurate (and insanely popular) Cars Land located in Disney's California Adventure, it was only a matter of time before we started to hear rumblings and rumors of a possible third installment of Cars. But until the other day, those were only rumblings without a real basis in reality.

In a recent interview with Route 66 News, Michael Wallis, voice of Sheriff and author of numerous books including Route 66: The Mother Road, may have leaked information regarding this highly rumored sequel. During the interview he revealed that not only was he excited that Cars 3 was underway, but that the basis for the movie would center back around the mother road - transferring from Route 66 to Route 99. Michael mentions that Route 99 (also known as the Pacific Highway or the Golden State Highway) is the highway that runs through the middle of California.

We've taken excerpts from the interview with Michael Wallis and compiled this into four minutes of the most relevant Pixar-related discussions. To listen to the full interview, please visit Route 66 News.

Keep in mind that while we cannot confirm that Pixar is truly working on a third Cars film (as there has been no official announcement), there is some validity in his early knowledge of the film seeing as he was the Route 66 consultant on the original Cars movie. There is also always the possibility that he accidentally misspoke and when he said Cars 3, maybe it will be a new 30-minute special like we just saw with Toy Story of Terror, or maybe it's a new series of shorts based the Radiator Springs crew visiting route 99. Again, with no official announcement, anything is possible, but we'd tend to believe it's a third installment in the Cars franchise.

One thing that we can say is that our excitement for another Cars film is through the roof. Yes, some people gave Cars 2 a hard time for straying too far from the peaceful town of Radiator Springs (not us, we loved Cars 2), but we couldn't be more excited if we could see Sheriff and the gang back on the blacktop. Plus, it would only give us another happy excuse to keep collecting even more Cars die-cast characters!

Finally, you can't talk about a new Pixar movie without talking about its potential release date. If Cars 3 is in the initial stages of production, when do you think it would hit theaters? We already know of several release dates that don't have a movie attached to them yet - could this movie fall into the June 16, 2017 slot? What about the November 22, 2017 or June 15, 2018 slots? If we had to guess, based on the timeframe to make these movies, the earliest we'd see Cars 3 would be the June 15, 2018 slot.

So, what do you think? Has Michael Wallis let the "cat out of the bag"...or stated in more automotive terms, has he let the "bearings out of the ball joints"? Let us know your thoughts and initial reactions to this news by leaving a comment below, or by visiting the Pixar Post Forum and join in the conversation.

At last night's Hollywood Film Awards, Dan Scanlon, the director of Monsters University was in attendance to accept the Hollywood Animation Award on behalf of the entire crew. Monsters University was chosen as this year's recipient by the Hollywood Film Awards creator, Carlos De Abreau who noted that,"Once again, the animation and storytelling of 'Monsters University' reflects Pixar creativity and greatness".

Sean Hayes, the voice of the argumentative and loving two-headed Terri and Terry in Monsters University presented the award to Dan who was eloquent in his acceptance speech. Dan thanked the entire Pixar crew, his wife Michelle, many of the beloved "brain trust", the hard-working Producer, Kori Rae and many others. Our favorite moment of Dan's speech was when he mentioned, "Films don't always come out the way we picture them in our heads. So lastly, I want to thank the myriad of failures and detours along the way in making this film that crafted it into a movie far better than anything I could have imagined."

Congratulations to the entire Monsters University crew for the recognition of all your hard work! May this be a fantastic kickoff to an award season full of rewards.

When you read the title to this post, you may have really asked yourself, "well, how can playing Disney Infinity help support a great cause?" Thanks to Will Kelley from Inside Disney Infinity, we have an answer to that question.

Inside Disney Infinity is a site dedicated to the video game Disney Infinity. This is also the home of the Inside Infinity Podcast, a weekly podcast where Will and other members of the community, discuss news, rumors, and info related to the game. He is passionate about video games and anything Disney related. The marriage of the two is his inspiration for the site, and the podcast.

When we heard that Will and the Inside Disney Infinity community was banding together to help support the Children's Miracle Network by playing video games for 25 hours straight, we asked Will if he would write up a quick guest post to explain this in more detail and fill our readers in on how they can help out as well...as well as how you can win some amazing, extremely exclusive prizes. Watch the Inside Infinity trailer below and read on for more details.

"First off, I would like to thank the folks at Pixar Post for giving me this opportunity. Secondly, I would like to thank you for taking the time to read this post.
My name is Will Kelley and I run a Disney Infinity Podcast. You may be asking yourself "why is Will here on Pixar Post, talking to us about a video game?" Well the answer is simple -- Kids. You see, every year the Children's Miracle Network puts on a marathon to help kids and Children's Hospitals across the world. Extra Life is a 25-hour video game marathon, where people from all over the world play video games in support of a Children's Hospital of their choosing. This year we have put together a team and we will be playing Disney Infinity for 25 continuous hours. We thought “what better way to support kids, than by being one ourselves?

Each of us has chosen our local Children's Miracle Network Hospital where thousands of children are treated each year, regardless of their family's ability to pay. These kids are facing scary stuff like cancer, cystic fibrosis, and injuries from accidents, to name just a few. On November 2nd, 2013, we'll be a part of a huge international celebration of the social impact of gamers with Extra Life, and it's our sincere hope that you'll find it in your heart to support us.
We have garnered support from members of Disney Interactive and Avalanche, the ones responsible for Disney Infinity. During the marathon we will be live streaming the entire event. We will be giving away exclusive items to those that can participate, and what is even more exciting, we are lucky to have a few developers from Avalanche joining us. We will be hosting Fan/Developer play sessions, so that fans can meet and play with those responsible for their favorite game.
It is my sincere hope that you can take the time to participate or donate. If you are interested, please take a moment to visit our Extra Life page at www.insidedisneyinfinity.com/ExtraLife Your donation is tax deductible and is for a great cause. We can't do this alone and need all the help we can get. Thank you."
- Will

Wow, how amazing is that? You can play video games along side some of the Disney Infinity developers, support an amazing cause and win amazing prizes for making a donation. In fact, the items you can win by donating (any amount big or small) are:

  • One of a kind, Concept Art with the artist signature.
  • A Developer Disc, which includes the upcoming release of Ralph (from Wreck it Ralph) - this is your chance to play with Ralph before he is released. This disc will be signed by the two Character Leads for Disney Infinity.
  • One of a kind, Starter Kit. This starter kit is signed by every member of Avalanche, it even has John Vignocchi's signature (The executive producer of Disney Infinity).

We've supported the Inside Disney Infinity crew with a donation, have you? To donate, just head to www.insidedisneyinfinity.com/ExtraLife and scroll to the bottom of the page - you can choose to support the Inside Disney Infinity team as a whole or select one of the individual players who will be playing in the 25-hour marathon! When you donate please enter "Pixarpost.com" in the Referral Code box so the Inside Infinity team can know how much Pixar Post readers support this great cause!

Our Monsters University Blu-Ray Review

The wait is over! Today October 29, 2013 marks the official release date for the Monsters University Blu Ray. Fans of all ages can now experience the full MU experience from the comforts of their home. Monsters University has continued to be one of our favorite Pixar films due to its hilarious storyline, unbelievable character development, jaw-dropping lighting, animation and simulation techniques that the team used to create this amazing film.

Read our review on the Blu Ray, where to find some of the hidden easter eggs and references from the film as well as where to purchase your copy of Monsters University with exclusive content.

Our Review

As we settled in to watch Monsters University for about the tenth time we were eager with anticipation to watch it in true High Definition at home. During the film we were again impressed with the beauty of the monster world and transported back to our college years. One of the best parts about watching the Monsters University Blu Ray is noticing all the details from scene to scene as well as finding easter eggs and other hidden references.

Speaking of easter eggs, Pixar often hides easter eggs on the Blu Ray menus and we just so happened to have found one...yup, there's a great little bonus feature that features Adrian Molina's amazing storyboarding work that he created for the opening title sequence of the film. To find this easter egg, first move the cursor to the "Bonus Features" selection (on the Bonus Features Blu Ray disc) - then press down and then press left. As soon as you do this, you'll notice a shadow of Dean Hardscrabble pop up in the upper right-hand stained glass window. Just click Enter now and enjoy!

The Monsters University Blu Ray is full of Monsterous extras (see our previous post for a full list of these extras) and we must say that not only does the Blu Ray look and sound fantastic on our home theater but if you are a fan of 3D films - you won't be disappointed!  The Blu Ray 3D disc is one of the most beautiful at-home 3D films to date (along with Finding Nemo). Just like any Pixar film, the 3D was used to only enhance the scenes and we must say that the Stereoscopic team at Pixar really did a phenomenal job.

Now, back to the extras - our favorite Blu Ray extra would have to be the "Campus Life" or "Paths to Pixar - MU Edition". Campus Life is fantastic because it really gives you such insight into the packed day that Dan Scanlon and many others experience while working on a film a Pixar. As expected from Dan Scanlon, there are plenty of hilarious moments as well as his sense of humor shines through. Paths to Pixar - MU Edition is great because it really injects a dose of reality into how many offbeat and odd jobs you may have before you land at Pixar. This was really inspiring.

The monster world isn't the only world that you'll find on the Monsters University Blu Ray, the rainy world of The Blue Umbrella is also included. Stepping into a rainy city, one would think that you would find gloom and coldness, however in this city the rain brings the world to life from the mailboxes and gutters to a full-of-life Blue Umbrella. This beautiful short film continues to amaze us with the realistic animation and awe-inspiring lighting and simulation. You may have to watch this film a few times to catch some of the hidden easter eggs within but trust us - they're there!

Our review on the director's commentary of Monsters U will be posted shortly as well - there is so much information and insight into how key decisions were made regarding Monsters U. We can't recommend picking up the Blu Ray just to get this feature - in fact, it's the one reason why getting the Blu Ray is leaps and bounds better than getting the digital release (as this is not present on that version).

Blu-Ray/DVD Exclusives - Where To Buy?

There are numerous versions of Monsters University for purchase, below is a list of some of the exclusives:

  • Target is offering an Exclusive Never-Before-Seen Bonus Content called "College Days". We haven't seen this extra clip ourselves yet, so if any of our readers have picked up the Target exclusive version, please let us know a little about the clip (short description and length of the clip).
  • Walmart is offering an exclusive gift set which includes a Disney Infinity character, you can choose Mike Wazowski or Randall Boggs. They are also offering the standard versions as well.
  • Best Buy is offering an exclusive Mike Wazowski plush with purchase of any of the three Monsters University Blu-Ray/DVD editions. Retails from $22.99 USD to $29.99 USD
  • Amazon has all three of the standard Blu Ray formats ranging from the 2-disc (Blu Ray and DVD) version, 3-disc (Blu Ray, DVD and Digital) version and the 4-disc (3D Blu Ray, Blu Ray, DVD and Digital) version.

Monsters University Scare Cards - The Complete Guide

$

Remember when Mike Wazowski and the Oozma Kappa crew break into Monsters, Inc. to get a little inspiration for the scare games? Well, we couldn't stop thinking about the scare cards that Mike and Sulley chat about after watching the movie on again on Blu Ray.
Mike: You collected Scare Cards, huh?
Sulley: Yup, 450 of 'em!
Mike: Impressive...I have 6,000 still in mint condition, but you know, 450's pretty good too.
Once we saw the end credits (with all of the scare cards flying around), we wanted to pull together a list of the Scare Cards from a few different sources. So, which ones do you have? Which ones do you need? And will they ever be produced more broadly? Read on for more details.

Disney Parks Scare Cards

The first set of cards were given to attendees of the Monstrous Summer 24-hour event held on May 24-25 at Disney World, Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. The cards that were released at the Disney parks are what we are calling the "official" cards. They were given in packs of 6 (1 top card which was the same in all packs, and 5 random Scare Cards) and the total set of cards includes 30 cards (29 numbered cards and one un-numbered top card). If you add in the Disney Store Scare Cards listed below this section there are a total of 36 cards (34 numbered cards and two un-numbers top cards)...see below.

Click any of the card titles to be taken directly to that scarers auctions on eBay - or click here to search for all Monsters University Scare Cards.

Disney Store Scare Cards

Thanks to our reader Randy, we have learned that the Disney Store was passing out packs of six cards over the 2013 Halloween holiday to promote the release of the Blu Ray. The packs all contain the same six cards (five character cards with one top card). Thanks as well to Randy for the photos!

Projectionist Scare Cards

This set of Scare Cards was only released to projectionists at movie theaters as a promotion for the film and was offered as a set of 10 cards (9 Scare Cards and 1 Top Card). (The promotional cards also came with a Monsters U hat as well that said "Perfect Projection" on the back.) The card images below are the same images that appear in the movie end credits - the difference is that the banner in the upper right-hand corner of the cards of these cards doesn't say what scare company they work for, but instead it lists the June 21 release date for Monsters U.

Search for the Monsters University projectionist cards on eBay.

Potential Future Release Scare Cards

There are a three additional Scare Cards that you can find digital images of (not printed cards) if you have the Monsters, Inc. Storybook Deluxe and (yes, and) the Monsters University Storybook Deluxe iOS apps.

#09 Tommy Gill

#14 Willy "Nightmare" Nowicki

#41 Carol Dallmar

With these extra card designs already laid out, we have to imagine that there are even more that are already prepared for printing. So, I think it's only natural to want to see more of these cards produced.

Will The Scare Cards Be Released Broadly?

As fans of the Scare Cards have turned to eBay to try and complete their sets, Twitter user laughograms asked Monsters University director Dan Scanlon (on June 23, 2013) if the Scare Cards would be released in stores. Dan responded with..."be patient".

Now, its obviously been a while since the movie hit theaters, but with the Monsters U Blu Ray being released (in North America), we couldn't help but wonder if they would be released soon - or before the holidays? We'll be sure to keep everyone up to date if we hear any updates.

We also wanted to provide a little additional information regarding The Animation Collaborative for our readers - we can't recommend checking out their website enough.

The Animation Collaborative's goal is to provide a focused, professional environment that fosters creative growth, community and collaboration. With instructors who are passionate about teaching with experience in both school and studio settings. These talented instructors currently work some of the most successful studios for animation and are here to give students individual attention in smaller workshops rather than larger classrooms - a perk that sets The Animation Collaborative apart from other schools.

Director Saschka Unseld Shares the Pitch Script, Artwork and Test Footage for The Blue Umbrella

$

Behind every Pixar feature film, short and special there is a cast of writers, directors and visionaries pitching their ideas to the "brain trust" within the studio walls. While the pitch process is discussed during press junkets, we rarely get the opportunity to view or hear what the original pitched idea was.

Photo via Indie Wire

Opening a window into Saschka Unseld's (The Blue Umbrella director) mind, he recently shared with readers of the Rainy City Tales 332 website his original pitch to John Lasseter for the short film - word for word. Below is just a snippet from that pitch:

And by catching a gust of wind...he pulls himself free of his owner.
He flies off into the air towards her.
He glides in the wind across the street...slowly getting closer and closer to her.
The city holds it's breath and the song stops. It gets quiet.
They all watch him, hoping he will make it across the street.
But then the wind changes direction...He tries to fly further by himself.

Be sure to read the full pitch on Rainy City Tales 332, or download it now directly from Walt Disney Studios as a PDF. Unseld has also recently shared some exclusive artwork from The Blue Umbrella with the website Indie Wire.

The first photo shows a beautiful cluster of umbrellas to help show a bustling city street during a rainstorm - I wouldn't want to be walking there!

Photo via Indie Wire

Another image shows more concept artwork for the many umbrellas that populate the streets as well as the stars of the film, Blue and Red. From the shape, to the smile and to the eyes on their face, this unique artwork is what we love about every 'Art of' book by Pixar. We're just hoping that there will be a second The Art of Pixar Short Films book coming out in the future so we can see more of these behind-the-scenes sketches.

Photo via Indie Wire

One of the other great moments from the Indie Wire article is a behind-the-scenes test video that showcases a ton of original video shot by the crew. You can see Saschka and others walking around the studio hidden underneath a series of umbrellas. We personally loved the moment where they drop umbrellas from upstairs in the studio to the lower floor to test how a falling umbrella moves, sways and dips as it's dropped - fascinating stuff! Be sure to watch the video on Indie Wire.

The Blue Umbrella Omitted From Oscar Race - Monsters University Advances

$
0
0
The award season is already in full swing with nominations, contentions and wins already taking place - animation studios and crews are eagerly awaiting the race for Oscar gold.

In a surprising announcement made by The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Pixar's The Blue Umbrella has been omitted from further consideration for Oscar gold. Making it the first year since 2009's Partly Cloudy that Pixar has not been considered for the Animated Short category.

As surprised as we were at this announcement it only made us wonder "Why?". Did the Academy see the animated film as too photo-realistic? There are so many questions to ask on why this digital feat was taken out of the running. While we cannot dwell on the outcome, we should note that in every theater viewing we were at, we loved hearing the audible gasps (or moments of emotional silence as blue lay battered on the street) from the audience during the short. To us, this is a true win for Pixar and for the entire crew of The Blue Umbrella. To have the audience think that there were live-action shots included in the film (when indeed it was pure animation), combined with the amazing hand-held camera movements, score, lighting, design (and much more) really made us take advantage of the fact that a nomination would be eminent.

This omission also made us really interested in the other short films that were nominated - The 10 Animated Short Films that have advanced to the voting process are listed below along with links to view a trailer as well as additional information.
  • Feral - Daniel Sousa, director, and Dan Golden, music and sound design (Daniel Sousa)
  • Get a Horse! - Lauren MacMullan, director, and Dorothy McKim, producer (Walt Disney Feature Animation)
  • Gloria Victoria - Theodore Ushev, director (National Film Board of Canada)
  • Hollow Land - Uri Kranot and Michelle Kranot, directors (Dansk Tegnefilm, Les Films de l’Arlequin and the National Film Board of Canada)
  • The Missing Scarf - Eoin Duffy, director, and Jamie Hogan, producer (Belly Creative Inc.)
  • Mr. Hublot - Laurent Witz, director, and Alexandre Espigares, co-director (Zeilt Productions)
  • Possessions - Shuhei Morita, director (Sunrise Inc.)
  • Requiem for Romance - Jonathan Ng, director (Kungfu Romance Productions Inc.)
  • Room on the Broom - Max Lang and Jan Lachauer, directors (Magic Light Pictures)
  • Subconscious Password- Chris Landreth, director (National Film Board of Canada with the participation of Seneca College Animation Arts Centre and Copperheart Entertainment)

Be sure to listen to our podcast episode 22 where we share our thoughts on The Blue Umbrella's omission from the Oscar race.

While The Blue Umbrella is no longer in Oscar contention for Animated Short Film, Monsters University advanced along with 18 additional animated feature films. The long list includes various studios as well as some films which have yet to be released - they are:

  • Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2
  • The Croods
  • Despicable Me 2
  • Epic
  • Ernest and Celestine
  • The Fake
  • Free Birds
  • Frozen
  • Khumba
  • The Legend of Sarila
  • A Letter to Momo
  • Monsters University
  • O Apóstolo
  • Planes
  • Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie – Rebellion
  • Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury
  • The Smurfs 2
  • Turbo
  • The Wind Rises

The final Oscar nominations will be announced on January 16, 2014 with the live show and awards presentation airing on March 2, 2014.

Disney has also begun populating their annual For Your Consideration webpage. Be sure to keep an eye on the page over the next two months as additional information regarding the cast, crew, music and much more is added. At this point, the page contains the full screenplay for Monsters University as well as a full list of all categories that Disney•Pixar is attempting to garner nominations for (image below).

We hope that Monsters University got off to a great start by having Director, Dan Scanlon accept the award for Best Animated Feature at the 2013 Hollywood Film Awards back in October.

Pixar Series 2 Vinylmation with Chaser and Variant details

Fans of the first series of Pixar vinylmation figures have been eagerly awaiting a follow up series for quite some time, but today fans no longer have to wait as the second series has been released. We love how this set comes with a complimentary character to match the first series - for instance, Dory matches with Nemo (from series one), Alpha matches with Dug (from series one) and so on.

With each set also comes a chaser character and if you remember the first series, King Fergus from Brave was one of the characters - so who would match up with Fergus...nope, not Merida or the twins (they've already been released separately). The chaser is the Witch - what a great figure!

The other really neat figure is the Mrs. Incredible Elastigirl variant (shown below). So really, the set of eight is really nine with the original and variant Mrs. Incredible!

The official set of figures is now available for purchase on the Disney Store website, or you can search eBay for individual characters as well (direct links below).

SERIES 2 - click text below each photo to be taken directly that character listing on eBay.

Additionally, check out the Pixar Post Forum topic related to the series 2 Vinylmation and let us know which one you're most excited about.

Toy Story Characters Featured in the New World of Color Winter Dreams Show

Disney's California Adventure is not only home to the ultra-realistic Cars Land, but it's also home to the water and light show called World of Color (a hit since it's debut back in 2010). The team behind World of Color have just unveiled a new 30-minute holiday inspired show complete with our beloved Toy Story characters that are featured in their own version of The Nutcracker.

For a behind-the-scenes look at how Pixar created animation on a water surface watch the video below shared by Disney Parks to see a quick glimpse into some of the raw animation - including a peek at Rex with a tutu on (similar to his loofah in PartySaurus Rex). What we found most interesting from the behind the scenes look was when Roger Gould mentioned that the area that the show was animated within is three times wider than a standard movie screen.

Our friends from Inside the Magic have uploaded a full version of the Winter Dreams show - to view the Toy Story portion of World of Color, Winter Dreams click ahead to time 16:45. It was great to see that the Toy Story portion of Winter Dreams showcased the majority of the our favorite characters from the franchise, as well as feature the iconic Pixar ball.

Pixar: 25 Years of Animation Exhibit Curator Elyse Klaidman Discusses New Exhibit at the Art Ledique

Photo via Pixar: 25 Years of Pixar
The Pixar: 25 Years of Animation Exhibit is continuing its worldwide tour showcasing various forms of Pixar artwork straight from the Pixar Animation archives. Guests will be in awe over the sketches, digital format prints and sculptures that bring our favorite characters to life. The exhibit will feature various artwork spanning the Pixar film catalog.

Moving to Paris, France at the Art Ludique, a new museum that highlights work from comics, live action, video games and animation, the Pixar: 25 Years of Animation exhibit is proud to be their opening exhibit and will be on display from November 16, 2013 to March 2, 2014. Featuring over 500 original art pieces by over 40 different artists, you can even view a working Toy Story Zoetrope (similar to the one displayed at Disney's California Adventure).

Photo via Art Ludique - Pixar: 25 Years of Animation
Animation Magazine recently had the opportunity to interview the exhibit curator and director of Pixar University and Archives, Elyse Klaidman. Below is just a snippet from that interview - to read the full details be sure to visit Animation Magazine.

Can you tell us a little bit about the exhibit. What can visitors expect to see at the exhibit?

In our archive we keep all artifacts that were part of the creation of the films, like drawings, paintings, sculptures and collages. The archive is open so artists can delve back into learning for whatever they are doing. We often receive requests to get access to the archive from artists while working on current projects, for one of different films.

The exhibit opens in Paris on November 16 at the Art Ludique center. Do you have any special plans to focus on Ratatouille?

We are not changing the current artwork. We are working with the museum on a little introduction section that centers this film. The images will be used for publicity too.

Photo via Pixar: 25 Years of Animation

The target audience for the exhibit is very broad, for children, their parents and animation professionals. How did you work on a balance to make the show interesting for everybody?

We are lucky because people love Pixar and our films. We have a broad audience. While working on the exhibition we kept one thing clear in our mind. Our goal was to celebrate our art and artists. Our artwork itself can be amusing, funny and serious and abstract. Many of our drawing are colorful, so they interest (little) children too.

What are the scheduled plans for 2014 and 2015?

After Paris, in 2015 the exhibit will go to three different cities in Spain. The demand from that country is large to see the exhibition. For the time after May 2015 – which will coincide with the end of the Spanish run, we will have some exciting opportunities for other cities.

The Art Ludique website features some of the art that will be on display as well as a video by Chief Creative Officer, John Lasseter who explains a little about the exhibition and how it is broken into three different categories based on the order he says makes a great animated film.
"I believe that in order to make a really great animated film you have to do three things really well.
Number One: Tell a compelling story that keeps people on the edge of their seat where they can't wait to see what happens next.
Number Two: Populate that story with really memorable and appealing characters.
Number Three: Put those characters into that story in a believable world and when you do that the audience will be swept away and truly entertained".
This is a rare opportunity to view this incredible art straight from the artists desk as well as masterful works from the Pixar archives and we really wish we were able to fly over to Paris, France and visit this great exhibit. Please be sure to share your experience with us if you happen to attend this great opening exhibition at the Art Ludique.
