Your friendly neighborhood monsters have teamed up with the home improvement store, Lowe's, to bring your kids into their stores for a series of "Build and Grow" workshops. In the workshops, starting on June 8 through June 9, your kids can learn how to make a wooden Mike and Sulley wall hanger. Later in the month on June 22 and 23, Lowe's will be offering a second session to build a Monsters University-inspired chest (hopefully it comes with all those cool stickers)! To register your kids for the session, be sure to log onto Lowe's Build and Grow website by clicking here.

In addition to the website, a short commercial showing clips of the movie, as well as the Build and Grow program can be seen below, or click here to watch the video directly on the Pixar Post YouTube channel.

Wired Interview with The Blue Umbrella Director, Saschka Unseld

Earlier today, the Rainy City Tales 332 Twitter feed (official twitter account for The Blue Umbrella) posted that the June 2013 issue of Wired magazine would feature a short article about The Blue Umbrella and Director, Saschka Unseld. The piece highlighted that although a typical Pixar director comes from within the story department, Unseld came from the technical side of the house. Why the difference? The article notes that,
"At Pixar, anyone can submit short-film ideas, and Unseld developed a pitch based on a photo that had stuck in his mind of an abandoned umbrella. A panel of Pixar heavyweights liked it enough to send Unseld to John Lasseter, who approved the story. 'The Blue Umbrella' was born"

In addition to the article, we were also excited to see that there would also be a short video included with the digital copy of the magazine. The two-minute interview with Unseld, really expands on the points of the article and really shows the passion that Unseld exudes about the project. We didn't include the entire video, but we wanted to whet your appetite enough to pick up a copy of the issue to view the rest. Watch the video below or watch the video on our Pixar Post YouTube channel.

Although the buzz is really circulating for Monsters University right now, we truly can't wait for people to be able to see this wonderfully artistic short film. We believe audiences are really going to be blown away with the touching love story and terrific character designs.

To download the digital copy of the magazine in iTunes, click here - additionally, you can buy the June 2013 issue on newsstands now.

The Disney Infinity team launched a new trailer today that shows some of the in-game play, as well as a lot more of our favorite characters, that will be available along with the Monsters University play-set. Although we previously noted that Randall would be available as a character within the MU play-set, we now have an extended glimpse of his concept artwork as well as what he will look like (for a quick moment) as he utilizes his invisibility within the game. We were also excited to see the entire Oozma Kappa crew in a scene for the trailer, as well as a closer look at Fear Tech's (MU rival school) mascot, Archie the Scare Pig. Check out the new Disney Infinity MU trailer as well as a few additional photos below.

In one of our previous posts we showed a photo of the Terri and Terry Perry Vinylmation. Though this chaser isn't confirmed, we can only assume that the brothers wouldn't be left out of the series.

The anticipation...the excitement...the nerves, they all come at once when you receive a letter from the college or university you're hoping to attend. You carefully open the letter, you hold your breath, you open the folds of the paper and read the words out loud..."accepted"! A sigh of relief...an outcry of joy...you're in!

Disney Infinity has just uploaded a new video which continues to show the endless possibilities of the Toy Box mode - but this time, the focus is on racing. Like the video shows, we can't wait to race Dash from The Incredibles against our favorite Cars characters...or even have a race of just The Incredibles family. Don't worry, just because Dash is the fastest runner doesn't mean he would beat Violet, maybe she'd use a hover board to win - or maybe Buzz's jetpack!

Sulley's hilarious "Jazz Clown" impersonation

Disney•Pixar has just released the final "official" trailer for the upcoming film, Monsters University and I don't think June 21 (or July 13 in the UK) can get here soon enough! This movie is so hilarious and the trailers only scratch the surface of the heart, humor and action that this movie contains, so sit back and enjoy the "final exam" trailer...but don't let it distract from studying for your finals!

Contest - Exclusive Monsters University Dream Journal signed by Dan Scanlon

Rendition of the dream journal that T.J. created

When Julie attended the Monsters University Press Event in April, she was able to enjoy a 40-minute screening of the film. During the movie, she was instantly drawn to the hilarious scene where Art gives Mike and Sulley a Dream Journal when they arrive at the Oozma Kappa house. The scene only lasts mere seconds, but to her, it was so funny that she was adamant that we had to make a replica dream journal inspired by that scene.

Screen shot from Monsters University showing the journal

Although, the dream journal itself was conceptualized by Julie, I carried out the arduous task as I had to hand-draw the entire notebook from glancing at a screenshot from the Monsters University trailer. Not only was the notebook itself completely customized (over many hours to try and get as many details accurate as possible) but the rainbow sticker located in the lower left corner had to be hand-drawn as well! The notebooks were then professionally printed (along with the rainbow stickers) so it would be a legitimate, high-quality journal.

On May 29, we were lucky enough to attend our second (complete) advanced screening of Monsters University - but this time the event was being attended by none other than Director, Dan Scanlon. The Michigan native decided to bring his charity screening to the Detroit area to visit with guests as well as support some amazing causes. We'll be writing up an entire post soon with all the details from the event - along with details of the custom Robert Kondo art piece we won at the silent auction (link will be posted here)!

After the screening wrapped, we were able to chat with Dan again (we were able to chat prior to the event as well) and this time we presented him with the custom version of the journal that we made for him and Kori Rae (Producer) - these version included their names in gold puffy paint (just like in the movie).

Version we gave to Dan & Kori - click to enlarge

After giving Dan his copy, he was also gracious enough to autograph a personalized version for Julie and I...but he also autographed an extra journal for us to give away on our site! Yes, you can win the custom dream journal that Dan signed - All you have to do to enter our contest is fill out the form below - please be sure to read all of the rules and qualifications prior to entering.

The winner will be announced by first name and last initial on our website no later than June 24, 2013 11:59 PM EST.

Please let us know if you have any questions or comments in regards to our contest and we wish you luck. Also, let us know what you think of the dream journal and if you're excited to potentially win this journal!

Additionally, It's not too late to support these great charities from the Monsters University advanced screening - each of these charities are dear to Dan's heart as they have all enriched his (or his families) lives. Please consider supporting - any amount is welcomed.

Monsters University Clip Highlights Terry & Terri

The entertainment website Dork Shelf has just released an exclusive Monsters University clip which expands on a scene that has been seen briefly in previous trailers - where Terri mentions that he's a dance major and says "5, 6, 7, 8, and turn"...but Terry (his Brother) doesn't want to turn! Following this moment, the lovable, Art enters the scene and offers up a dream journal to Mike and Sulley - it's a perfect tie-in to our autographed dream journal contest that we're holding.

Monsters University Charity Advanced Screening in Detroit

In our most recent contest announcement for the Monsters University (MU) custom dream journal (autographed by Dan Scanlon), we mentioned that we were lucky enough to have attended our second advanced screening of MU - but this time it was also a charity event that was packed with exclusive artwork and other items up for auction. Below are some samples of the artwork and other memorabilia that we were in awe of viewing (and knowing that we could potentially win as well).

Young Mike Wazowski by Dice Tsutsumi
Source - @PixarPost Vine video

The image of young Mike Wazowski above, created by the masterful Dice Tsutsumi, was our most sought-after piece (because of the unique charm and feeling the piece emitted) - but unfortunately, it must have been on the radar of a lot of other people as well. We reached deep, but our maximum bid was more than doubled when it was all said and done - whew.

We were lucky enough to have won one of the best pieces in the auction though - a Robert Kondo complete pencil drawing of the MU library with a ton of characters in it. We enjoyed viewing all of the pieces, but we loved how this was a complete piece rather than a single character drawing. What did make our win a little more stressful (and fun) though was that we got into a bidding war with Dan Scanlon himself! When we were chatting outside prior to the event, Dan mentioned that we would probably be in a war over that piece and he was right. We were in love with it immediately and knew we had to have it - especially since Julie conducted a one-on-one interview with Robert Kondo while she was at the MU press event at Pixar.

The final item we were bidding on was the Archie the Scare Pig drawing that Dan Scanlon completed - it was just so cute and really captured the essence of that little guy. After the auction, we were ushered into the massive theater to begin the screening. Dan kicked off the event with a brief introduction about the beauty and realism of The Blue Umbrella short film, his experience working on MU, as well as discussed the amazing teamwork which enabled the film to come together.

After Dan's introduction, the lights dimmed and The Blue Umbrella kicked off - although we had seen the short previously (and discussed it with Director Saschka Unseld), we hadn't seen it on the big screen before. As we've said on many other occasions, the film is just so beautiful and the story is so charming, we can't wait for everyone to see it.

As MU started, the audience anticipation was felt throughout the theater. There was a young girl sitting next to Julie and I that said to her Father, "is this it?!" with such an excitement in her voice you couldn't help but smile! Viewing the complete movie for the second time was so amazing and allowed us to concentrate on some of smaller details and really absorb the jokes again. Without giving anything away, I can say that although those details are so small, they truly enhance the film in every way. One of the details that I noticed this time around can be seen in the Final MU trailer that was released last week - where the Oozma Kappa gang are working out in the early morning and you can see their breath in the cool morning air.

After the credits rolled, Dan Scanlon came back to the front of the theater to discuss the charities that were supported by the event and the importance of those to him and the community. He told a personal story of how Digital Arts, Film & Television (DAFT), helped get him started on the filmmaking path with their great programs. We were even treated to a high-school aged video of Scanlon being interviewed after his short film won an award at a local film festival. While watching the clip Dan chuckled about how he flicked his hair back with a quick head thrust. As a side note, seeing Dan with his perfectly parted (down the middle), ear-length locks completely reminded me of my own 90's-hair style - whew!

As we exited the theater and headed to the after-party, everyone was given a copy of the official MU double-sided movie poster. Guests loved receiving the poster as many of them realized that they would have an opportunity to meet with Dan and have him sign their poster. He was so gracious to meet with everyone in line, sign some items and even take a few photos.

As the evening was winding down we were informed that we would be able to keep a few of the extra items that were placed around the room to promote the event - a set of MU drink coasters, MU school temporary tattoos and some of the MU quad paper advertisements. On our way out, we also took our time taking in all the great concept artwork that was on display as well - we even noticed one piece that showed the Roar Omega Roar crew in Slugma Slugma Kappa gear (which was later converted to a sorority rather than a fraternity).

Monsters University Scaring Eduction Clip - WSJ Exclusive (UPDATED)

$

0

Wall Street Journal's own Barbara Chai has just uploaded an exclusive article and clip from the upcoming film Monsters University that highlights the growing rivalry between Mike and Sulley. As Professor Knight calls for a "common crouch" position in Scaring 101, he walks up and down evaluating the monsters in a stern tone. Achieving this tone was the intention of the film's co-writer, Robert Baird, who said, "In some ways, because he’s a scaring teacher, we wanted to infuse him with a drill sergeant mentality, because scaring is theory but it also is physical discipline". For more details and additional comments from Baird, be sure to read the entire Wall Street Journal article.

UPDATED: After reviewing the clip and the online article, I also noticed that there was a print article as well in today's WSJ. Be sure to check out the June 3, 2013 article (also by Barbara Chai) titled, Big Boogeymen on Campus for additional details on the movie as well as an interview with Dan Scanlon. The article talks briefly about Dan's own college experience as well as Pixar's research trips to three college campuses to gather details and allow the Pixar artists to get that college-feel again. Along their campus tour, "They noticed that college students were, by and large, stressed out, and wanted the film to convey the same feeling".

Monsters University B-Roll Footage with Voice Acting and Tons of Interviews

$

Earlier today, the Trailer Addicts site uploaded not one...not two...but twenty-eight short clips showing anything from in-studio voice acting (which is great), to interviews with Pixarians, to interviews with the amazing voice talent from the upcoming Monsters University.

We scoured through all the videos and have highlighted the clips that we really enjoyed by embedding the videos directly in this post. There are many more clips than what we embedded here, so be sure to read our short descriptions of the remaining posts and feel free to watch one or all of the clips that catch your attention. We can also confidently say that even thought the movie hasn't been broadly released in theaters yet, these clips leave us wanting so much more and we can't wait to see the Blu Ray extras already.

B-Roll #1 (1:48) - shows a great set of storyboards in the process of their creation as well as some early animation tests and other fun animator acting to get their characters' movements just right.

B-Roll #5 (0:57) - highlights some examples of traditional hand-drawn characters as well as great sculpts of Sulley and Art (which we always love)!

The next set of clips focuses on the vocal acting - this was totally fascinating to me as this is a dream of mine. I've always wanted to voice a character in a film not just because I love animation, but because I think it's so amazing to be engrained into the fabric of a character in that way. Every time I can get any insight into this process by watching the actors or taking in the interaction from the director, I'm all eyes...and ears!

B-Roll #2 (5:31) - Shows some of the voice acting of Billy Crystal (Mike), John Goodman (Sulley), Steve Buscemi (Randall), Helen Mirren (Dean Hardscrabble), Dave Foley (Terry) and Sean Hayes (Terri). Keep in mind that these videos are like the clips that were released last year for Brave - they have a music track playing over them that makes hearing the voice acting difficult at times. This was done by design so just keep that in mind, but it's still worth it to hear Dan Scanlon's direction of the actors - it's simply fascinating.

B-Roll #3 (4:39) - Shows voice acting for Charlie Day (Art), Joel Murrary (Don Carlton), Nathan Fillion (Johnny Worthington III), and Bobby Moynihan (Chet Alexander).

B-Roll #4 (3:19) - Shows the vocal acting for Alfred Molina (Professor Knight), Julia Sweeney (Ms. Squibbles) and Aubrey Plaza (Claire Wheeler) - this also has some great vocal direction by Dan Scanlon to Julia in order to get her to visualize the moment in the film.

B-Roll #6 (1:18) - Great look into a story development meeting at Pixar with Pete Docter, John Lasseter and Dan Scanlon. The video also looks at a brief discussion on the development of Archie the Scare Pig as well as shows us a group of fraternity students that are unseen in the movie.

Screenshot from B-Roll #6

B-Roll #7 (1:47) - Shows a smattering of clips from Randy Newman's recording sessions.

For the remaining clips of Pixarian interviews and interviews with the vocal talents, head to the Trailer Addicts page - there are 20 additional clips!

Monsters University New Clips and Toolkits

$

The official Disney Monsters University site has just uploaded a series of five new clips and toolkits that show a few additional moments from the movie as well as early test animations. The clips, as spotted by Pixar Pro, show a mix of fraternity life as well as pranks that the MU gang play on each other.

In addition to the "Practical Pranks" toolkits that were shown above, there are also a series of toolkits that we haven't been able to locate to pass along to our readers. The first toolkit we saw while in our local Disney Store location - that toolkit showed the Oozma Kappa gang working out (like in this scene from the final MU trailer), but without final lightning. The second toolkit was actually integrated into the May 30 episode of Wipeout titled Boss and Employee: Third Shift. In this episode, announcer John Henson hires a set of interns who are...the Oozma Kappa crew. The (approximately 6-second) toolkit starts with Sulley sitting on a couch while mike Mike quickly tumbles into the scene - finally the rest of the OK crew quickly jump on the couch (while eating popcorn). I did attempt to watch the streaming version of the show on ABC, but the introduction was a different intro that didn't include the OK brothers. Did anyone else catch that clip?

Finally, last week, another short toolkit called "Scream" was uploaded by the German Pixar site, Pixar Blog.

Just shy of two months ago we revealed a ton of Monsters University concept art and today Disney•Pixar has released a second set of high-quality concept art from the upcoming film. This new set is packed with more amazing characters and environmental concepts. Between this new artwork, the concept art we posted about at last weeks MU charity screening and the release of the official Art of Monsters University book (review posting soon) that hit shelves this week, MU fans couldn't ask for more.

Isn't some of their work just amazing? The pencil work from Peter Chan really blew me away and the Mike and Sulley lying in the bunk beds by Daniela Strijileva is just fantastic. Those aren't the only two that I loved, but they were the first two to jump off the page to me and stand out as different in this batch of concept art.

Since I mentioned the Peter Chan pencil drawing, I should also note that there are two additional drawings that are very similar to this in the Art of Monsters University book as well as many more packed pages of beautiful concept art on every page from many of your favorite Pixarians!

Monsters University - A High-Level Look At The Animation Process

$
0
0
The Disney Insider Blog recently posted a really interesting high-level breakdown of the animation process that Monsters University followed. The animated GIF below takes a look at a scene where Sulley holds up Mike after capturing Archie the Scare Pig and shows what each step of the process looks like.

The order of the frames goes from the Story Department, in which the story artists pre-visualize a scene before the scene moves onto the Art Department, where they formulate the style and feel of the scene. Next, the Modeling Department will handle the scene and make a series of wire-frames - designing the shapes, textures, colors and other aspects of the world. In the Layout Department a virtual camera is added as well as the placement of the characters before sending the scene to the Animation and Simulation Department where they will add textures to the characters and animate their movements. Finally, the scene moves to the Lighting Department to give the scene it's overall feel and mood.

Of course, as mentioned, this is a very high-level look as there are many painstaking hours involved with each step to ensure the scene is not going to have to be reworked time and time again through each frame of the movie. Either way, it's still really interesting to see this process take shape like this - in fact, last year's Brave progression video was very similar.
