'Coco' Takes Home Oscar Gold for Best Animated Feature & Best Original Song at The 90th Annual Academy Awards

Today is the day that we've been anxiously awaiting - the day of the 90th Annual Academy Awards. As the award circuit comes to a close, Pixar's Coco took home Oscar gold for Best Animated Feature Film, making it the studios ninth film to win the category. Accepting the award were Producer, Darla K. Anderson, Director, Lee Unkrich and Co-Director Adrian Molina. Read the trio's full acceptance speech below – including a cheer from Anthony Gonzales (the voice of Miguel).
Darla K. Anderson: Thank you to the Academy, we are so happy. Coco is proof that art can change and connect the world and this can only be done when we have a place for everyone and anyone who feels like "an other" to be heard. This is dedicated with enormous love to my gigantic interwoven family, and most especially, my wife, my rock Kori Rae.

Adrian Molina:Love and thanks to my family, my Latino community, to my husband, Ryan. Each for expanding my sense of what it means to be proud of who you are and where you're from, we hope the same thing for everyone who connected with this film.

Lee Unkrich:We share this with our immensely talented cast and crew as well as with the Executive Teams at Disney and Pixar. Thanks for the support of my wife Laura, my three kids, Hannah, Alice, and Max. My entire family – I love you, and the biggest thank you of all to the people of Mexico. Coco would not exist without your endlessly beautiful culture and traditions (crowd erupts in a rousing applause while Lee is visibly touched). With Coco, we tried to take a step forward toward a world where all children can grow up seeing characters in movies that look and talk and live like they do. Marginalized people deserve to feel like they belong. Representation matters.

This marks the second Academy Award win for Director, Lee Unkrich, and the first Academy Award win for Producer, Darla K. Anderson. If you recall, the 86th Academy Award Ceremony marked the first time the Academy began awarding an Oscar statuette to both Directors and Producers in the Best Animated Feature category – with Jonas Rivera honored with the first Pixar producer win for Inside Out in 2016, followed by producer, Marc Sondheimer who won for Piper in 2017.


Pixar's Coco good luck continued throughout the award show, as the songwriters of "Remember Me" won Oscar gold with Best Original Song. As husband and wife duo, Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez took to the stage, they thanked many, including Lee Unkrich and Darla Anderson, with Robert Lopez concluding his speech by dedicating his award to his mother who passed.

We can't agree with Coco's Best Original Song win as it was used to enhance the story of the film in two drastic ways – upbeat with Ernesto de la Cruz to an emotionally poignant moment with Miguel and Mama Coco. "Remember Me" is already a classic in our eyes and we couldn't be happier for the entire Coco team and Pixar Animation Studios for this recognition.
