The Finding Dory Blu-ray will hit stores in less than one week on November 15 (digital version available now) — but before the Blu-ray comes out you can get a quick preview of several of the special features like the Voice Acting or Creature Features extras that we wrote about late last week. Recently, an additional preview was released highlighting the origins of Dory's character and her complex evolution from a forgetful supporting character to the leading lady.

INTERVIEW

In addition to the story of Dory's origins, a recent chat with the voice of Dory, Ellen DeGeneres called out a few interesting facts about her love of sea turtles and the ocean in general.

How much fun did you have in the recording booth?
The recording booth was both fun and challenging. This is a very personal story for Dory. It’s emotional and it was very easy for me to cry [in the booth]. I didn’t read the lines and pretend to sniffle, because I was emotional and sad for real. I felt everything that Dory was going through.

Did you also get the giggles in there?
Of course! It’s funny in there because the script is hilarious. And then they’ll also ask me to improvise, which is great. There are lots of moments we can’t use because people are laughing, so we have to do it all over again.

How do you get into the mindset of a blue tang fish?
I don’t think about Dory being a fish. That’s the beauty of why people are so moved by this movie, because it’s all about human emotions and human qualities. If I pretended to be a fish, I don’t think people would be as invested. That’s what gives all of these fish and sea creatures such depth, because there’s real human emotion there. I’m playing Dory as if I’m voicing a person.

Why does the world love Dory so much?
Everyone loves Dory because there’s not one speck of judgement or meanness in her. She’s so happy and optimistic. She’s kind and she’s innocent, and she perseveres no matter what. She doesn’t see herself as a victim and she never feels sorry for herself. Even if she does, she just picks herself right back up.

Which of Dory’s characteristics would you most like to possess?
I would love to have every trait of Dory’s. I try to have as many traits as she has when it comes to optimism, perseverance and non-judgement. That’s why she’s such a loveable character because she thinks that everything is possible. She just keeps swimming!

Where in the world would you most like to swim?
I’d love to swim in The Maldives. I’ve always wanted to go there because it looks so beautiful. I went to Bora Bora not too long ago and that was amazing, but The Maldives would be fun.

What can Finding Dory fans do to help protect the ocean?
There are lots of things you can do. Firstly, don’t leave trash on the beach. Don’t leave trash anywhere because it goes into the sewers, which goes into the waterways. Never litter. And if you see somebody littering, you should tell them that that’s not a safe thing to do. Our planet is not a trash can.
