Luca Sea Monster Screencap

The teaser trailer for Luca was released today (Feb 25) and simply put, this film looks like a ton of fun, and wow, is it gorgeous.

This is a brilliant teaser because it sets up the premise right away — we understand the hidden secret these characters have and the reason they need to, well, stay out of (hot) water. The only thing we don't know yet is a little more about the title character and his story, but that will come in the full trailer — for now, enjoy the adventure, the beauty, and the laughs.

You can watch the trailer embedded below or directly on Pixar's YouTube. Then be sure to join us tonight as we discuss and break down the trailer for Luca LIVE (details below).

VOCAL CAST

Pixar’s upcoming original feature film Luca is a fun and heartwarming story about friendship, stepping out of your comfort zone, and two teenage sea monsters who experience a life-changing summer. Directed by Academy Award® nominee Enrico Casarosa (La Luna) and produced by Andrea Warren (Lava, Cars 3), Luca features a remarkable voice cast.

  • Jacob Tremblay (“Room,” “Wonder”) lends his voice to Luca Paguro, a bright and inventive 13-year-old sea monster with endless curiosity—especially when it comes to the mysterious world above the sea.
  • Jack Dylan Grazer (“We Are Who We Are,” “Shazam”) voices Alberto Scorfano, an independent, free-spirited teenage sea monster with unbridled enthusiasm for the human world.
  • Emma Berman provides the voice of Giulia, an outgoing and charming adventurer who befriends Luca and Alberto.
  • Maya Rudolph (“Bridesmaids,” “Saturday Night Live,” “Big Mouth”) voices Daniela, Luca’s mother.
  • Marco Barricelli voices Massimo, Giulia’s father.
  • Jim Gaffigan (“The Pale Tourist,” “Troop Zero”) voices Lorenzo, Luca’s father.

ADDITIONAL DETAILS

An EW article also released shared a few additional details from Director, Enrico Casarosa about how Luca comes to find himself in a town where they despise sea monsters — his overly confident friend, Alberto, drags him there.

"We love that Alberto and Luca have this common passion of strange human things," Casarosa says. "Alberto also has a bit of a weird sense of what these things are. He's looking from afar, so he misunderstands a lot of things. He plays the expert, but he gets a lot of things wrong. That always gave us a lot of fun comedy."

While on land, Luca and Alberto meet a girl named Giulia, who "feels very righteous about injustice" and "has this strong intensity," while also feeling "very much an outsider in her own way," the director says. Joining them in the cast are Maya Rudolph as the voice of Luca's mother, Daniela, whom Casarosa describes as a mixture of "toughness and warmth," and Jim Gaffigan as the voice of Luca's father, Lorenzo.

Populating the town are characters like Massimo, the mustachioed figure spotted in the trailer who's voiced by Italian stage actor Marco Barricelli. The resemblance to Massimo and to the adult character in the filmmaker's La Luna is no coincidence. "I always like to joke, 'It's the same actor. I'm just casting him for a different role,'" Casarosa remarks. Saverio Raimondo, an Italian stand-up comedian, voices "our villain in town."
