To help celebrate the holidays Director Saschka Unseld of The Blue Umbrella is giving us a glimpse into more behind-the-scenes peeks from December 1 through December 24 in a new website titled The Blue Umbrella Making-of Holiday Calendar.
Today marks the first day of The Blue Umbrella holiday calendar which appropriately begins with Unseld inspirations for the film. While sharing some of the exact details that developed into this visually stunning film he also shares photos of a cast of characters with a short back story on each one. One of the most powerful and interesting comments from Unseld is when he explained the moment when he saw the broken umbrella that inspired the film.

...And at that moment, it seemed like one of the saddest things in the whole world. I did not come up with the idea for a film at that moment, but I still remember this overwhelming feeling of sadness for something that should "just" have been an object...While some of the additional characters are easily recognizable from the film others are a beautiful insight into the mind of Unseld and his team while they were developing The Blue Umbrella.
