It was all fun and games on social media, and now it's about to become a reality. The viral Ratatouille TikTok musical will stream on January 1, 2021. Over the past several weeks, the internet has brought a bit of Pixar magic to the world, with fans envisioning a Ratatouille-themed musical (see the full history below). The online trend #ratatouillemusical has amassed over 90 million views with details from costume design, original songs, set design, and more.
As announced on Playbill earlier today, Seaview Productions will present a filmed concert-style presentation of the musical with ticket sales benefiting The Actors Fund. It’s unclear what numbers will make into the concert, but there are plenty of options in addition to the one that started it all (“Ode to Remy,”) including “Tango for Colette and Linguini,” “Trash is Our Treasure,” and “Anyone Can Cook”—all songs that build upon fan-favorite characters in the movie. Additional details including cast, creative team and production details will be announced at a later date.
“Finding new outlets for creative collaboration has never been more imperative than it is right now,” Seaview CEO Greg Noble added. “We can’t wait to share what these remarkable creators have dreamt up, which will now allow them to benefit other artists through the vital work of The Actors Fund.”
Ratatouille: The TikTok Musical will be available to stream for 72 hours. Click here for tickets.
A BRIEF HISTORY
In August, TikTok user Emily Jacobson (who was identified by Rolling Stone and goes by @e_jaccs) posted an "Ode to Remy" that went on to become the now contagious theme for "Ratatouille: The Musical." With the lyrics, Remy, the Ratatouille, the rat of all my dreams / I praise you, my ratatouille, may the world remember your name," composer and arranger Daniel Mertzlufft was the first to take Jacobson's song and turn it into musical theater gold.
With a few simple chords and melody changes, Merzlufft's arrangement now plays as the would-be show's grand finale. For measure, Mertzlufft's arrangement was posted to TikTok on October 19 and instantly went viral with thousands of accounts using the song as inspiration and duet to further the musical itself. As featured on Playbill, the musical was honored with its own Playbill, created by fans complete with cover art and details on the first and second act.
